(this is actually fairly exciting - it's either going to be a Keane style disaster or he'll be the new Kenny Dalglish)
(i also get the feeling this thread is going to have a population of 1 for ever)

Translation for US-bore: Alan Shearer is a completely beloved retired striker who is going to manage his former team. It's like if Bret Favre had stayed retired, only to return as the Packers coach in a couple years.
This brings back a ton of Championship Manager nostalgia. I'd sign Dennis Wise or Chris Waddle to Newcastle and he'd score about a billion goals off of corners. God, I'd get so excited for the flashing text that indicated a score.

For about a decade after I moved back to the US, 90% of my Euro football exposure came through CM or old friends. I'd know a ton of teams and players, but with a few exceptions they were all spreadsheets to me.
Just last week I was watching soccer videos on Youtube, and was all "Andy Cole is black?!?!?" For real.
I actually got FM2009 a few weeks ago after not playing anything in the series for years (since before the visualizations) and was overwhelmed by the detail at first. Now it's turning into an awesome timesink, of course.

Poor Joey Barton. Shouldn't have left!
Actually yeah you should have.
-
i wish arsenal had played newcastle this week instead of last just so we could have given shearer his first ass-beating of the season

The last desperate act of Mike Ashley to salvage some dignity. If Newcastle go down, the club would be worthless to any prospective buyers - that £250 million asking price is like a fairy dream for Ashley now.
No.2 Ian Dowey will be the brains behind the operation. Shearer's only there to rile up the fans/players - which is probably more important at this stage.
It's a no lose situation for Shearer. If Newcastle go down, it's not his fault because they were already in the mire. If they stay up, he further cements his hero status.
Oh and has anyone seen ol' Dennis Wisey - has he done the smart thing and finally disappeared?
