Title: Anyone here read Scott Pilgrim?
Post by: Himu on March 31, 2009, 09:40:04 PM
I thought the premise sounded lame but I've been reading the books and dammit I like this.

But seriously, I do have some of his stuff.  Haven't gotten to read it.

Patel certainly hasn't.

I only CREATED an RSS feed to track Edgar Wright's MySpace blog two months ago so I wouldn't miss a single one of his daily photo updates!

Though principal photography started yesterday and updates have shifted to http://edgarwrighthere.com/

Just finished vol 5. It's mad nerd homo but somehow compelling nonetheless

Less relationship angst and nes worship would elevate it profoundly

I dunno, the last one really bored me. I just don't care about the scott/ramona thing. Give me more wacky! Give me more meta-gags! Give me more drunken rage!

I kind of expect/hope that Edgar Wright will find the good core of what makes the series work and distill it down to the compelling elements.

Scott: do you love me
Ramona: yes and no
Ramona: did you cheat on me
Scott: yes and no
Ramona: ...
Scott: ...
(Rinse, repeat)

Look, someone got nerd metahumor in my copy of blankets

Blankets. :yuck

Never could get into Blankets.  When it came to autobiographical tales, I always preferred Brubaker's A Complete Lowlife. (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Lowlife-Ed-Brubaker/dp/1891830201/ref=sr_1_51?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238551319&sr=1-51)

the comic timing and panel flow is impeccable, and the jokes are USUALLY tongue-in-cheek enough to work even for non-nerds despite the endless videogame/animu references, plus it really DOES capture the nostalgia for college life as a self-aware dork. it really only fails when exploring the scott/ramona relationship -- the tonal shift is so amazingly awful and amateurish, in that OH GOD I R SERIOUS COMIC ARTIST TIME TO GET SERIOUS way. it probably has the best supporting cast in any recent comic i've read, though. it just needs to stay away from interpersonal melodrama beyond what's needed to set up its gags.

I think the movie obviously needs Nick Frost as the titular character, and Simon Pegg as Ramona.

I just recently went through the series in a span of like three days. Really, really enjoyed it - it's genuinely funny stuff and the premise and characters are a lot of fun. I can't wait for the last volume or the movie.

Scott Pilgrim would be better if they kept the romance stuff at minimum and played on the nerd jokes more.

volume 4 is the best volume because it has the best balance of nerd shit and romance

volumes 2 and 3 made me throw up, but had awesome moments sprinkled here and there.

Scott pulling out a sword from his chest is fucking awesome adljadf;

I've avoided it for years because it's a relationship comic.  I will continue avoiding it because every review of it builds upon that while praising it.

I don't care about other people's relationships no matter how endearing or cute. This is why I like Seinfeld and not Friends.
