Title: I'm hungry all day, every day.
Post by: Reb on April 02, 2009, 03:30:46 PM
What's going on EB?

I eat three meals a day, reasonable portions.
I wake up hungry, breakfast seems to make me even more hungry, then I'm hungry until lunch.
Lunch lasts for about 2 hours, causing me to be hungry again in the middle of the afternoon, so I eat my emergency apple.
About 15 minutes later I'm hungry again. At 6/7 I eat a good dinner, a full plate, potatoes, vegetables, meat etc.
Guess what, I'm hungry again two hours later.

And it's not "I could eat" type hungry, it's "I skipped two meals" type hungry.

So... Some sort of deadly disease, did I stretch my stomach by eating to much the past 2 months, what?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I gained 2 kilos the last 2 months. I'm a fatty waiting to happen.

Eat when you are hungry but work out to make up for it...?

I don't think I have enough time to do that kind of exercising. Plus, doesn't that make me hungry?

I used to be like that when I smoked. Do you smoke distinguished effete fellows?

Nah, I don't smoke homos.

Maybe you have a tapeworm or something...

Maybe, that's the kind of thinking I was looking for. Feed my inner hypochondriac.

I'm already doing that. I think I can get back to a reasonably weight. But only if I watch what I eat / stay hungry.
Plus, I would eat A LOT if I would give in to the feeling al the time.

I was about to say "worms" but you're gaining weight. Maybe you're gaining because they can barely keep up.

Anyhow, I've been there dude, and you gotta be careful before you stretch it even further. I would go with cheebs' advice, but then again you're not complaining about the gained weight but the hunger.

The hunger is annoying, and strange. I eat plenty.

I meant smoke cigs. I thought yeropeans called them f.a.g.s.

I know man, I was joshing ya. I don't smoke.

Hunger is (usually) a good indication that your body isn't getting enough calories.

Rebiak are you a particularly big guy or do you exercise a lot?

Any medications maybe?

Take a poop on the floor and root around in it for signs of worms, cancer and/or pregnancy.

No, I'm a skinny guy in build, now I'm a skinny guy with some fat around his waist.
My BMI is almost perfect, but I can clearly see I have too much fat (about 5-10 kilo's worth I would guess).

I now run 3/4 times a week for about 30/45 minutes, but I was hungry before I started running again.

The wrong kind of food maybe?

No medication, in my whole life I took about 5 aspirins total, that's it.

Take a poop on the floor and root around in it for signs of worms, cancer and/or pregnancy.

I used to have worms as a kid, they itched my anus so bad.

I eat 5 full grain sandwiches (nothing fatty on them) at breakfast and lunch.
5 out of the 7 dinners have vegetables, almost no fast food.

High-calorie food, even junk food, would fill you up over a period of time because of it's calorie content.  It's true that some foods make you more or less full depending on a lot of things like fiber, water and carbohydrate content and type - but generally speaking it's the calories.  Which is why people can stay the same weight for years without actually counting the calories they ingest.
Unless your entire diet consists of high-sugar food, which can spike insulin levels and make you temporarily and superficially hungry, I wouldn't necessarily say it's your diet.

Maybe something is speeding up your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories, and make you hungrier.  I'm not sure what would do that, though.

My diet is pretty solid. I only drink 1 cup of coffee a day, water the rest of the day.
My snacks are mostly apples.

Could stress burn more calories?

Are you an emotional eater?

Nah, I eat at set times.

- Breakfast
- Ontbijtkoek (http://images.google.nl/images?hl=nl&q=ontbijtkoek&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi)
- Lunch
- Apple
- Dinner
- Apple

This used to work for me, for years.

Probably, but not to such a significant degree.  Maybe it can affect how you feel when you eat food.  The whole reward-pathway-brain thing.

It's mostly when I pause and relax, hunger hits me.

Part of me would like to just give in to it and drop by McD every day, for an extra meal.

It depends on what you're eating.  Are you eating junk/fast food or healthy food?  Healthy organic food will have plenty of fiber and fill you up whereas junk/fast food just makes you crave more junk/fast food.

Can you just get diabetes out of nowhere?

I don't eat a lot of junk food, once a week maximum.

A clearcut sign of diabetes is if you're constantly drinking fluid and are still thirsty.
Title: Re: I'm hungry all day, every day.

Diabetes runs in the family. If your parents or grand parents have it, you could have it too. Constant hunger and other related states are a common complaint. Especially if you have been in a lot of stress, high blood pressure only aids Diabetes.

OR

It could just be the stress ( if you've been stressful).

I'm almost never thirsty.

My grandma has it, she's the only one I know of.
I am kinda stressed, but I have been so for almost 2 years now.

Maybe it's a language thing? I don't mean 3 full hot meals. 2 sandwiches as breakfast, 3 as lunch, a plate of food as dinner.

most days i skip breakfast and lunch. my body is just used to it i guess from school. ulcers here i come!

That sounds unhealthy.

Are we talking full huge like twenty things on them sandwiches, or are we talking about thin little peanut butter and jelly sandwiches you can see through?

I so want some PB&J sandwiches now...  :(

Somewhere in between, let's see if I can google what the Dutch call a sandwich.

Well, no wonder.  I thought you ate like two or three of these:

Yeah, I'd be hungry all the time too.  I was wondering where you had the room for all that sandwich and then a couple apples and a plate of food a day...  Good lord.

You could just try snacking on celery every time you feel hungry during the day.  It might sound nasty eating that much of it but the fiber won't be absorbed and you'll have at least temporary relief from the hunger pangs until you get to your next meal.  I'm thinking of trying that as I've gained about 5-10 college pounds.

Are you comicially needing to hit up the bathroom every 5 min.

I'm diabetic and that was really the only warning sign. Plus waking up and having my tongue be a crusty dehydrated mess.

I poop twice a day, regular as clockwork.
The only thing wrong with me that I can notice is hunger and a slowly expanding depression.

I was thinking about something to chew on, just to keep it away, I'll see if celery is my thing.

Why don't you see a doctor?

My dog's pancreas stopped producing enzymes which meant he couldn't digest his food, I guess it's a little like diabetes.  He was hungry all the time for a week or two, but it was only when I noticed him losing weight that I realised something was wrong.  Maybe you're only keeping the weight on by eating so much.

Either there's something physically wrong (diabetes, tapeworm), there's something mentally wrong (depression), or you're eating too many carbs. Based on the '5 sandwiches a day' plus potatoes etc for dinner...I'm betting on the carbs. Your blood sugar is spiking after you eat, but crashing again soon after, making you hungry again. Try eating more protein and fats and less carbs for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.

As to why this is a problem for you now, vs not in the past...*shrug*. I bet more has changed in your lifestyle than you've told us here. No-one eats exactly the same and has the same activity profile for years and years. I'm not saying you're lying; just suggesting that you may be omitting important info because you don't see what impact it would have.

I'm contemplating this, yesterday I also realized my legs are sometimes hurting for no reason lately, like the blood flow is messed up.

This is me, too. I used to just eat whenever but I gained like 20 pounds last year and need to get skinny again for our wedding next year.

People still compliment your boobs though!

I don't think this works for me, since I resist the hunger, I'm not eating more.

What kinds of food should I think of, for protein and fats?
What did change, is that I'm travelling more for work, which changes my diet, because it's hard to be structured.
But now I'm back to my normal routine, so things should be normal again.

Protein: lean meat is optimal. Chicken & turkey.
Fats: Nuts, vegetable oils like olive oil.

If you reduce carbs somewhat and compensate with the same calories from protein and fats, you should feel fuller and reduce those insulin/blood sugar spikes. Check out info on the Atkins diet, the Zone diet, the Paleo diet etc. It's tough to cut back on carbs because they're so prevalent, cheap and generally easy, but if this is a serious problem for you, you're going to have to change SOMETHING.
