Title: If you were to remove Capcom published games, does this year suck for games?
Post by: The Fake Shemp on April 02, 2009, 10:00:40 PM
I feel like there's not a lot of great stuff on the horizon or already released (a quarter into the year) that doesn't have Capcom's name on it.

RE5 IS MEDIOCRE

...yeah, Capcom is singlehandedly saving gaming so far this year.

Oh, I agree - it was totally mediocre.  But it was at least worth a playthrough, which is more than I can say for the vast majority of crap that has come out so far.

I'm still stuck on last year's onslaught of games, but yeah I think the only new retail games I've bought this year were Capcom games. Downloadable games is a different story however.

What's Capcom doing this year besides RE5?

I thought there was stuff-all on the horizon, even from Capcom.

Depends on your criteria really.  If you want AAA high budget blockbusters from legacy franchises, then yes you're fucked.
I'm not going into list mode but there's alot of smaller projects I have my eye on which look like fun.

wii games :*  The portables have some interesting software too but I have no use for them.

double edit:  Make sure you guys give Prototype a fair shake.  Its from the guys who made the badass Hulk gta game last gen.

Pretty much.  SF4 is GOTY and RE5 is pretty awesome under the right conditions.  Everything else has been pretty much shit.

So far in 2009, the PC has had several high quality RTS titles, expansion packs to well respected games and well made console ports.  In the upcoming year, either Diablo 3 or/and Starcraft 2 will be released and will almost certainly be good.

Killzone 2 was great, as was Dawn of War II, but I doubt either will even rank on a top 10 of this year once all is said and done. 2009 looks fuck awesome.

Wut? I thought you said Killzone 2 is the best war shooter ever.  That status should be enough to place a game into the top 10 of any year.

Eh, I don't think I've ever said that. I've said that it belongs on the top shelf of the genre, and it definitely does the whole "war atmosphere" thing better than any other game (while doing some other things not so well). I'm more interested in other type of games, though, and as far as shooters go, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy Halo ODST and Modern Warfare 2 MP at least as much as I enjoyed KZ2. That is if this case of shooter fatigue is temporary. For as great as the game is, it's still just a shooter.

I didn't even remember what Halo ODST is until you mentioned it.  How is it supposed to play?  More importantly, I'm more curious about how its graphics would look, considering how poorly Halo 3 fared in that area.

Post by: duckman2000 on April 03, 2009, 12:30:02 AM
I don't think Halo 3 was a complete failure in terms of visuals. There were some nice areas, and if Halo ODST looks at least that good, then I'm fine with it. It would be nice if they improved character and weapon models, but whatever. I don't know much about the gameplay, but as far as I understand, it's basically Halo without Master Chief, and with all the reasonable changes that comes with removing the super-marine from the equation. And with less garbage story about confused intergalactic extremists and various adaptive diseases, it's definitely promising.

I'm interested to see how Bungie takes on urban combat, if that's indeed the route ODST truly takes. The brief periods of urban combat in Halo 2/Halo 3 have been lacking. Since you're not the Master Chief and are therefore inherently more vulnerable, let's see if Bungie channels their inner Cliffy B and incorporates a cover system. I only know that the cinematics from the Halo Wars demo made me long for something a bit more Gears-y in the Halo universe.

Halo 3's graphics were fine considering the size of the environments.

I don't buy that. The environments may cover large areas, but there's really very little going on in each environment. It really doesn't seem like graphics quality was a priority, but as long as it's not down right ugly, that's fine.

For me, this year being good depends on a lot of things:

– How good will Forza 3 be, and will GT5 make it out this year (hahaha yeah right :/)
– Will Battlefield Bad Company 2 or Mass Effect 2 make it out this year (EA has to have something for this fall)
– Will Infamous and Brutal Legend be good

Microsoft just needs to announce something for once.  We're in April already and all we know about is Halo ODST, and even then we don't know much about it.

It's a awesome year if your a japanphile that likes j-rpgs and japanese action games, devil survivor, devil summoner 2, bayonetta, knights of nightmare, infinite line \ space, perfect prosecutor ngs 2 etc + fighters like blazblue tekken 6 and kofxii. And there's still some good-looking western stuff like alpha protocol mafia 2 dragon age & batman arkham aslyum that should be good.
Also hoping some jp-only games like 7th dragon, dragon quest ix & yakuza 3 make it state-side this year. (but that's doubtful).
