The Braves support is strong on this forum.

Only thing I'm honestly worried about is the bullpen.  Rotation we have built in redundancy- as long as more than 2 starters aren't hurt at the same time we'll be fine.  Like the lineup quite a bit, hope we don't throw Schafer out there to lead off to start tho.  Let him ease into it, have KJ lead off at first.

if worse came to worse for the bullpen, we could pull hanson back up as a long reliever i'd think.

the bullpen is fine, biggest  problem is oflatery he freaking sucks

and the redundancy of bennet/carlyle/campillo

should have kept acosta imo.
Title: Re: The Official Evilbore MLB '09 Regular Season Thread of Bleeding Ulcers
Post by: Human Snorenado on April 04, 2009, 01:08:06 AM
Acosta sucks too, tho.  I agree that Bennet/Carlyle/Campillo are all basically the same guy, tho.  I also would feel a lot better if we still had Will Ohman as our lefty but oh well.

As for bringing up Hanson and using him in long relief, I would rather not to be honest.  At some point this season I fully expect one of our starters to get injured because if that didn't happen it just wouldn't be a Braves season.  Hanson will get his shot.  I would honestly like to see us trade Vasquez at the deadline if at all possible so that we can exercise Hudson's option for next season.  If we have to choose between paying Vasquez or Hudson around 12 million next season that's a fucking no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Acosta was overused imo. When hes used sparingly hes good.

Well, then we're gonna need a new manager for him to be good, because if there's one thing Bobby loves more than platooning people it's riding bullpen arms into the ground.

Yahoo finally put Smoltz and Ervin Santana on the DL, so in the league where I have poop for offense I picked up Todd Helton and Mike Lowell, both of which have had pretty good springs.  Helton in particular raked this spring- hit nearly .500 with 4 hr and 16 rbi.  So between them, Melvin Mora and Derrek Lee, hopefully I'll get lucky and someone won't suck cause my offense on that team basically consists of Jose Reyes, Manny Ramirez and spare parts.

Ichiro still plays for the M's, but he's on the DL with a bleeding ulcer.  Thus the thread title.

Ichirou is still a friendless lunatic with a persecution complex.  Two completely different people.

That inning right there shows why this team is .500 at best. Vazquez has to be destroying the locker room right now. Now they have three outs before they have to face Lidge. What a horrific game. Bobby should cut both Moylan and Boyer tonight. No excuse what-so-ever to walk five guys when you're up by 7 runs.

And now Howard make a nice diving play. God I fucking hate this team. Gets me in the worst mood.  :maf

I don't think that's the case (.500 team, think we're a bit better than that) but it proves that our bullpen is still a big weakness, which is what I'd been saying for a while.  Moylan I think will be fine in time, but he IS trying to come back from Tommy John in record time- I'd like him to rehab for another month or maybe two before he tried pitching again.  But there's no excuse for Boyer/Campillo/O'fuckerty- get rid of 'em, call up people from the minors and sign Will Ohman to be your lefty.

The Rangers' offense is gross... 9 runs in 2 innings so far today.  Of course, it's against Carl Pavano and they pretty much HAVE to do that to stay in games with their pitching, but STILL.  Even Andruw has gone 2-2 today.

Gallo, who is suspected of driving under the influence, fled the scene and was arrested about a mile away, officials said.  His license had been suspended prior to the crash for a previous drunken driving conviction, police said.

He is expected to be charged with felony drunken driving, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.  Investigators may also pursue murder charges against him, according to Lt. Kevin Hamilton of the Fullerton Police Traffic Bureau.

Felony Drunken Driving - Strike 1
Felony Hit-and-Run - Strike 2
Vehicular Manslaughter - Strike 3 (as it was obviously gross negligence and is a Felony in CA)

Even without the murder charges, that cholo-looking motherfucker is going to jail for life.

This could almost be a GAF mod post:
Quote
i've gotten a dui just because i was over the limit. there's a difference between driving after you've had a drink, and driving when you're so drunk you run red lights and kill people.

driving a car is dangerous. period. alcohol makes it worse, but so does being an idiot, a horrible driver, too old, too young, inexperienced, on the phone, or whatever.

harsher penalties for dui's don't prevent these accidents, they just fuck otherwise law abiding tax paying people who happen to be the unlucky one pulled over 2 minutes after leaving a bar and breathalyzed for no reason other than that.

i don't give a fuck what you morons who disagree with me think, harsher penalties for dui's just give the state more fucking money and allow there to be more donut eating fat fuckholes hiding behind bushes waiting to fuck someone over.

you really think the fucking asshole that killed this kid wouldn't have been driving if the penalty for drunk driving was $10,000 or $100,000 instead? don't be fucking dumb. people die. car accidents happen everyday. whether or not alcohol is involved, or what the penalty for dui's are, they're gonna happen regardless.

Sore shoulder could end Glavine's career. (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Ap.awm4gZ6Ms6dzolGL.St05nYcB?slug=ap-braves-glavine&prov=ap&type=lgns)

Gotta say I'm not surprised about this, to be honest.  I think it's kind of time for him to hang 'em up.  It's a shame that he wasn't able to pitch well at the end with the Braves, but oh well.

As for calling up Hanson, I would honestly prefer to give Reyes one more chance since I don't like not having one lefty in the rotation.  Then hopefully we can get something for Vasquez at the deadline, cause hey- even if he's gonna pitch modestly well, I'd still rather have Hudson over Vasquez for basically the same price next season, and we're probably not affording both.

The Yankee ballpark in Arlington is ridiculous. I have seen more one-handed home runs in three days then I did in the height of the steroid era in 1999.

The ball carries just as much to left field as it does to right, it's just the left field can hold more balls inside. I know it's a severe SSS, but it's friggin April.

I think it would be hilarious if New York spent all this money on pitching and their franchise turns into Texas or a Colorado of old. Where pitchers go to die and hitters find new life with inflated stats.

How awesome is a televised Red Sox/Yankee slugfest going to be when it's loaded full of commercials and lasts 6 hours, instead of the usual 4 1/2?

The new park is a problem. When youve got left handers being able to fist homeruns over the right field wall...it's not a good look. Somehow those balls are going to need to be contained, and I'm not quite sure how. At the very least some shielding from that "jet-stream" is desirable.

Oh and if Pavano somehow beats the Yanks today I'm going to be very mad.

Holy shit at my 10-0 lead in Fantasy btw.

Isn't the Yankee Stadium built in the same direction as the old one? Is the old one still standing?
Title: Re: The Official Evilbore MLB '09 Regular Season Thread of Bleeding Ulcers

I'm not sure on this but I believe it is (wiki doesn't seem to have more info on it). But I know the sun still glares down on you in left the same way it was in the old stadium. But the presence of that jet stream, which wasn't there at the old stadium, seems to indicate that the park isn't completely parallel to the old one.

I mean, we play with it to so it'll even out; but it's such a gross oversight that it's embaassing.

I heard something on WFAN yesterday that said the breeze from the Hudson actually blows unobtrusively into the new stadium which is what's causing the homeruns. And as the weather warms it'll get even worse - the jet stream will coming in at a higher intensity + warm weather means all you have to do is pop it up to shallow right-center and that thing is blowing out.

It's hilarious how 1.5 billion dollars can't buy you competent computer modeling software.  :lol

If the old stadium is still standing, then maybe its amplifying that stream by funneling it through a smaller area?

I don't think so...the steam is coming in from the west and NYS is built north east of the old stadium

Kinda hard to tell from that angle, but it looks like it may not be lined up exactly. The stream looks like it may have blown to the deep left center part in the old stadium. Now it looks like it may blow directly to left. My angles are not exactly accurate though. But, there definately has to be something to this.

What was the point of building a new Yankee Stadium anyway?

The old one was totally fine. It wasn't like Dolphins Stadium or Tropicana Field which need to be replaced. And after watching a replay of the Yankees game yesterday, the old stadium looks a lot better than the new one anyway, even if it's just because of nostalgia or whatever.

And now the Yankees are paying the price for their $1.3 billion waste of money. I guess this is the new Curse of the Bambino. :lol

Sorry PC, I just had to post this from your Scout thread:

One major league scout from a top-tier organization is so high on Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward that he said he would be willing to give the Braves anyone on his team’s 25-man roster to get him. “The best young hitter I’ve seen in years,” the scout said. “He’ll be leading the league in home runs for 10 years once he gets here.” Heyward, 19, was the Braves’ No. 1 draft pick in 2007, the 14th player taken overall. He’s strong, disciplined, and smart – his parents, Eugene and Laura, are both Dartmouth graduates. “Let me put it this way,” another major league executive said of the 6-4, 220-pound left-handed hitter. “He’s a cross between Dave Parker, Darryl Strawberry and Fred McGriff. How’s that put it? He’s got a chance to be a real superstar.”

Oh ARod ...

More details from Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts' book "A-Rod" were released Wednesday by the New York Daily News. The book alleges Rodriguez did not stop using steroids when he was traded to the Yankees in 2004, and he might have been using as far back as high school, the Daily News reports.

Roberts broke the story that A-Rod failed a steroid test in 2003. Yankees teammates, Roberts writes, nicknamed Rodriguez "Bitch Tits" in 2005 because he put on 15 pounds in the offseason that resulted in round pectorals, a condition called gynecomastia that can be caused by anabolic steroids.

Rodriguez put on 25 pounds of muscle between his sophomore and junior years. Former high school teammates told Roberts that A-Rod was using steroids back then and his coach knew it -- an allegation the coach, Rich Hoffman, denied.

A-Rod "pitch tipped" when he played for the Rangers by letting opponents at the plate know which pitch was coming in lopsided games. A-Rod expected players he helped would reciprocate when he was having an off night and needed to get his batting average up.

• A-Rod's off-the-field antics including his poker habit; his divorce from his wife, Cynthia; his relationship with Madonna; and his other affairs are detailed.

However, Roberts said on the radio show that she did not address those elements. "I never wrote anything about his bedroom life," Roberts told Patrick. "That was pure speculation on other people's part."

A-Rod was hated at Hooters, where he tipped the minimum 15 percent.

The Rangers were actually in the lead of the West as late as the end of May in 2005. They ended finishing 7 or 8 games below .500 by the end of the season.

The Indians almost blew a 9-0 lead yesterday and yes, in fact, blew a 7-0 lead today.  We have no answers left in the minors. We have to keep running guys out there and hope they rebound.

I want to say its the worst bullpen in the history of the sport, but the Yankees pen is somehow worse this year.

Yes, pretty awesome news.

The Indians have some guys down there (Rondon, De La Cruz and the kid who threw the perfect game Gomez) that look pretty promising. All Venezuelans, I believe.

With Victor Martinez and Asdrubal Cabrera (also Venezuelan) tearing it up, I am proposing that the Indians sign an exclusivity contract with the country for all their baseball talent. I'm sure their dictator would oblige.

No offense, but it was some miracle that all those guys in your bullpen performed the way they did in 08. At some point, reality was going to set in.

Really cool article on Ichiro at ESPN:

Quote from: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4329684
Ichiro visits Sisler's grave

During an All-Star Weekend when history is made and honored, Ichiro Suzuki paid respects to a man whose achievements are linked with his own.

Ichiro, in St. Louis for his ninth All-Star Game, visited the grave of St. Louis Browns star George Sisler, whose single-season record of 257 hits was broken by the Mariners outfielder in October 2004.

Sisler's descendants -- including Sisler's 81-year-old daughter, Frances Sisler Drochelman -- had traveled to Seattle to witness Ichiro break the record that was set in 1920, and last weekend, Ichiro returned the gesture.

"I wanted to do that for a grand upperclassman of the baseball world," Ichiro told MLB.com. "I think it's only natural for someone to want to do that, to express my feelings in that way."

Ichiro, accompanied by his wife, Yumiko, and some friends, laid flowers at Sisler's grave, at Des Peres Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Sisler, a Hall of Famer, died on March 26, 1973. His career was marked by a lifetime .340 batting average, and a .407 average in 1920. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939.

"There's not many chances to come to St. Louis," Ichiro said, according to the Seattle Times. "In 2004, it was the first time I crossed paths with him, and his family generously came all the way to Seattle."

Another All-Star Game might be old hat to Ichiro, who was the MVP of the 2007 game and has won a Gold Glove in each season since entering the major leagues out of Japan in 2001.

But this time, Ichiro got to meet President Barack Obama, who threw out the first pitch. Obama, visiting the clubhouses, stopped and signed a ball for Ichiro, who gave a slight bow upon meeting the President and appeared as giddy and excited as a kid.

"My idea, when I saw him, was to say, 'What's up?' to him," Ichiro said. "But I got nervous. You know, he has that kind of aura about him. So I got nervous and I didn't say that to him. I was a little disappointed about that.

"But I realized after seeing him today that presidents wear jeans, too. So my hope is that our skipper, [Don] Wakamatsu, was watching that and we can wear jeans on our flights, as well."

I don't htink they got rid of Kazmir because they needed money, I think they got rid of him because they're fucking stupid and thought that just because he sucked the beggining of this year, meant he was suddenly shit, and that's why they got rid of him for two prospects that are terrible. The Rays just have a terrible FO when it comes to trades. Look at Edwin Jackson, a prime candidate for the Cy fucking Young this year and we traded him for Matt Joyce, a no body. WTF. It's like all the bad karma we got for stealing Kazmir from the Fets bit us in the ass with Edwin Jackson and Kazmir. And now they want to get rid of BJ fucking UPton and i'm sure they'll trade him for some more shitty ass prospects.

Smh, we should've picked Lincecum over Longoria.

Edwin Jackson is not about to win the Cy Young award.  Sorry.

Also, they traded him not because they needed money (although they do) but because in the future they wouldn't be able to afford him and wanted to get something for him while they could.  Please don't talk to me about stupid trades, either- the Braves have written the book on them in the past decade, from trading a LEGIT Cy Young contender in Adam Wainwright and a serviceable middle of the rotation starter in Jason Marquis for a rental of JD Drew.  Then, after not learning that lesson they traded a hot catching prospect, a guy who has turned out to be the best defensive SS in the AL, a future ML starter and a top reliever for Mark Teixeira, who when we learned that we couldn't sign him we traded for Casey Kotchman, who we thought so much of that we then traded him for Adam LaRoche.

Smh, we should've picked Lincecum over Longoria.

Yeah . . . that was horrible.  ???

Longoria is a fantastic positional player and the Rays have him locked up until 2016 for peanuts. According to fangraphs, he's worth over $30 million this year alone, and the Rays are paying him less than $5 million a year over the term of his contract.

Pitchers are risky draft picks and rarely live up to their potential.

I'm not baseball fan but I love sports radio so it's impossible not to know what's going on. Seems like the Tigers really dropped the ball to be in this situation.

They'll lose on tuesday. I know nothing about the sport but I'll still bet  :violin

Everything in this post is spot-on.

Yeah but Longoria is going to be a Yankee as soon as he's done. Lincecum will always be ag iant.

you have him locked up for seven more years! Lincecum will be making $20 million+ a season long before Evan hits free agency.

Because he's getting an average of $4.2 million a year for the next five years!! THAT IS FUCKING ROBBERY.

I know that, but the FO likes to think in prospects, so they think he's worth two type B prospects, which to them is more valuable than a amazing player, the next HOF-er.

And I can't wait for next year when cigarillo gots like Dave Cameron and RJ Anderson start their yearly circle jerk about how great teams that pay attention to defensive metrics are. They'll always just be "good enough" until they a) they can't afford their prospects like Tampa Bay or b) get outspent within their respective divisions by the unlimited coffers of the Yanks and Angels and then both teams are irrelevant the following year.

Can't wait for bluemax to cock-gobble Dave "Cano will always be shit/Red Sox dropped the bomb cutting Brad Penny/John Smoltz" Cameron and whine like a pissy bitch when you say anything remotely bad about him.

Jesus you are like criminally stupid.  I can think of plenty of teams that would want a "shit player" that hits .300, gets on base at a .400 clip, slugs .500 and hits about 25-30 hrs with around 100 rbis a year.  Show me where on the doll Youkilis touched you, because there's no other reason to dislike him.

Comcast has been screwing over Seattle residents. All the suburbs and nearby towns have had tons of additional HD channels for months now, including TBS HD, AMC HD and even most of the Canadian broadcast networks in HD. I pay the same price as my parents, but they get about 25 additional HD channels at no extra cost. We'll be lucky to get them before the end of the year. We're supposed to get them by November 3rd, but I'm not holding my breath...
