One of the best game designers ever (except Shenmue). He'll be missed.
-
When we get out of 2G2D, there will still be forklift operators. There is still hope for some of these people.
-
He is retiring from creating games for commercial release. That just means he will have plenty of time to create Shenmue III according to his personal vision, without having to compromise with marketing demands.

:rofl
-
he created vf2 and vf4, two of the greatest -- if not THE greatest -- fighting games of all time
he himself should request that shenmue be blotted from his record
just like miyamoto should do for everything he's produced/directed since yoshi's island snes
-
VF4 is the greatest 3D fighting game ever made. I don't think argue against it.
And I liked both Shenmue games. I never really expected a Shenmue 3 to ever come out anyway, so it's not that big of a loss when it comes to that series.
-
Sega's 80's arcade output, for which he was largely responsible for almost all of their big hits, buys him a lifetime of cred.
and shit man, what else did he do that was awesome?

Didn't some good things come of Shenmue? Like QTE elements and dynamic relationships with NPCs.
-
QTE :rock
-
Well, I personally don't care for QTEs but many modern gamers love them.
Speaking of Sega sandboxy games, what's going on with Yakuza 3? I hope SEGA will bring it over here 'cause it looks really hot.

WHY GOD WHY
THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, ATHEISTS
-
This is a good thread. Now I know who to add to my "People Who Lack Taste" list.
-
Please tell me why exactly you don't like Shenmue.
If you played it for a while and it just didn't click with you, that's fine, but if it's something stupid like "who wants to spend 10 hours opening drawers lol" then things are different.
-
Because I couldn't find anyone who wanted to play a game of Lucky Hit
-
I played the PAL version of Shenmue II so I don't get that joke. :teehee
-
have you ever read let's play shenmue?
best game eveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer
-
Great developer. I didn't get into VF until VF4 EVO. Awesome game and what a wonderful intro to the franchise. Too bad it is not doing well anywhere, even Japan.
-
I feel like I've seen the Virgin Mary or something. I was sitting here for five minutes trying to come up with some kind of counterargument, but I know I'll never be able to convince you otherwise. That's fine though. Shenmue and Shenmue II are probably the greatest examples of love-it-or-hate it games.
I'll say this, though. Two of my favorite moments in the first game that exemplify why I love the series are
when you sneak into Master Chan's warehouse and when you search the hidden room under Ryo's house. I've never seen another game better capture the fear of the unknown.

This is dumb. After YI, Mario64 was life affirming and before YI Starfox snes could never veer from its inevitable furry trappings.
-
Ignore Drinky, he's just trying trying to make up for that zelda review. He's like the collage dude that blows another dude at a party and then after people find out, he starts randomly bringing up how he totally hates 'distinguished effete fellows'.

the "furry trappings" in the SNES one consist of occasionally seeing one of six 32x32 pixel images of animals' heads in the bottom left corner of the screen. it's not exactly a huge part of the game.
-
Shenmue is part adventure game and part Virtua Fighter (if it let you fight multiple enemies.) Outside of the main gameplay stuff, it is also kind of the first 3D game that tried to create a complete world. You could go to the arcade and play Space Harrier, collect capsule toys and other things like that.

i don't think collagists are any more likely to be repressed homosexuals than artists in other media

not really

SM64 is an N64 game actually deserving "vociferous laudations."

Cause you play nothing but distinguished mentally-challenged Lucasarts games, go kill yourself what would you know exactly

You guys didn't like mario64 in 1996?
-
shenmue :(
-
I was playing Sword of Vermillion the other day... pretty bad, grind heavy and repetitive. I remember years later when I found out Yu Suzuki made the game.
I have a lot of nostalgia for the first Shenmue - played it shortly after release, and the way the world felt so 'alive' and detailed was so unlike anything else at the time. It was really easy to get caught up and immersed in the game world. Though the actual gameplay, apart from the 70 man brawler, and some of the combat, was pretty snore inducing.

Daytona USA was mostly Toshihiro Nagoshi, actually. Speaking of, at least Sega isn't forgetting about Daytona USA... (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=357441) :-*

You guys didn't like mario64 in 1996?
no, i owned a pc and was playing games that weren't clumsy, tiny 3d jungle gyms with repetitive collection tasks

i remember thinking the opposite: wow, this world is so tiny and limited in your ability to interact with it
:smug pc gaming :smug

vf is boring fighter, like the gran turismo/forza of fighting games
mk vs. dc kills it
this guy is overrated

I've loaded up Shenmue 2 a few times and I don't think I found Wan Chai...er, I take that back, I got to the scene where you punch the tree.
I can totally respect what the game is, which was amazing for its time, but I think you have to be a bit fetishistic to truly enjoy the Shenmue games these days. It controls horribly, the mini games are boring, fighting is boring, dialogue is beyond bad ("so bad its good" is nice, but not for a full length game, imo), and it may even be a bit too realistic. I spend my days running around working and making measly sums of money in hopes of saving up enough to survive--why would I want to do that in a game?
Yu Suzuki seems like Sega's Sakaguchi-- a guy who did a lot in his time and who changed the industry, but we need new blood.

I disagree about the controls. They were a pain at first, but once you get used to them they are great. Holding R to run and shifting your movements whenever necessary felt natural after awhile.
I'll agree that the mini-games can get kind of boring, especially if you don't get tons of money on the one Lucky Hit game in the wherehouse district in Shenmue II. The parts of that game where you need to collect money are definitely the worst.
I think the dialogue in Shenmue 1 gets by on "so bad it's good" for the entire game. The second game's dub is just plain bad and takes away from the game, which is why playing the PAL DC version is so necessary.
-
Poor guy. A shame really since he had a pretty good track record (until Shenmue of course). :'(

I get if SM64 ain't your thing, but what awesome 3D platformers were there on the PC at the time?

Tombraider 1 & 2 running on early 3D videocards?
Personally, I thought SM64 was great on the N64 and even better when emulated in 1024x768 on the PC with UltraHLE.
-
Oh right, forgot Tomb Raider was on the PC as well.
Still, it's Tomb Raider.
-
Actually, according to this:
"Mr.Yagi and Mr.Suzuki will be member of Amusement R&D Division as of April 15, 2009."

Shenmue 3 hopes NOT crushed? :o

tomb raider with voodoo graphics
hell, i enjoyed that 3d first-person remake of montezuma's revenge more than mario 64 -- which also used my n64-raping voodoo card
:bow pc gaming :bow2
-
Sword of Vermillion is waaaaaaay better than Shenmue. I used to play through it repeatedly as a kid. Shenmue came out in college and it was remarkable in that it was so boring that it wasn't even entertaining when I was whacked on PCP.

:'( I'm off to send Demi Moore my suicide note.

Mario 64 sucks
Yu Suzuki is a legend a his games have always had a big impact on my gaming. I remember playing Outrun on the genesis. It was my first racing game. Virtua Fighter is like the alpha omega of 3d fighters, and I jizzed my pants when it came out. VF2 is the sole reason I wanted a Saturn back when I was a kid and it was pretty much all I played for a year.
And Shenmue...SHENMUE.
Yu Suzuki > Miyamoto

No they aren't go to the warehouse and play gambling games. You can get enough money to last the entire game in 10 minutes. If you don't like something, don't do it. Lucky Hit sucks so I don't play it.
-
Oh right, forgot Tomb Raider was on the PC as well.
Still, it's Tomb Raider.
And Super Mario 64 beat it by nearly a month, five if you count the Japanese release. Plus, didn't Tomb Raider have tank controls?
Montezuma's Return was Oct. 98.
-
Shenmue would have been great if it didn't have some of the shittiest voice acting. Was that game on a multimillion budget?
-

$70 million.
-
I think the English voice acting was a complete afterthought.
They should have just used the Japanese voice acting with English subtitles.
-
I like your new avatar Himu.
-
They should have just used the Japanese voice acting with English subtitles.
Which was why DC Shenmue 2 was infinitely better than Shunmue.

i didn't play mario 64 until a good year after it came out, maybe longer
-
It's worth any price to crush the hopes of dreams of shenmue fans.
-
why do you hate me genghis
You know how much I love you, so why?!?!
-
do it
DO IT
-
Amen to that. I would pay to start shenmue 3, just so I could cancel it.
:lol
I should commision fake shenmue 3 concept art and leak it. i ahve enough Sega connections that people would always wonder if it is legit.
would be as fucked up as the guy who made up info for Fire Pro Wrestling HD :lol
