I'm thinking about buying a used PSP to use as an emulation machine. I just have a couple questions.
1 - Is it worth it to buy a PSP as an emulator, and if so what is the highest I should spend on it?
2 - Should I buy a PSP Fat or PSP Slim?
Thanks.
-
It's been well worth it in my case. Definitely go with the PSP2000 model as the Phat has an awful dpad for 2d games. The screen is ok for the games but it does have some ghosting (not nearly as bad as the Phat's). You get used to that after awhile. I don't think the 3000 model has been hacked yet, so you might want to avoid that.
It pretty much emulates 8/16bit system now. The SNES is still a little spotty in places but alot of games now run decently on it. Capcom/SNK arcade games run flawlessly as does Genesis, Turbo, NES, SMS, C64, SCUMM, and PS1. I can't seem to get the Amiga to work well though. Anyways, yes, it's well worth the effort if you want old school gaming on the go.
-
1. y do u wanna play old ass games
2. slim
there's a lot of good psp games and sony is supposedly gonna have a big e3 for psp so imo it's worth it, but not for emulation...but for actual psp games
-
1 - I've only checked out an emulator for SNES but it worked real well. That was about a year ago. I would imagine that SNES emulation would work even better now. Except for some obvious control issues due to the PSP having 1 less analog stick and 2 less buttons than a PS1, PS1 emulators supposedly run really well on the PSP.
2- Slim is way better. The weight difference is a huge factor when the PSP is being used for more than an hour.
-
I think it's worth it. I did the same thing and I'll probably only use it for PS1 and a few NES games. Definitely go for the slim.
-
I remember reading that not using the UMD drive makes the battery life a whole lot better.
Is there any truth to that?
-
This is absolutely worth doing. Go all out and get a PSP 2000, longer-life battery pack, and a nice big-sized memory stick pro duo-- I have 16gb of space on mine currently.
You can load it up with all sorts of stuff, play everything at smoother speeds than normal, enjoy longer battery life, and no noise coming from the UMD. A non-CFW PSP is a gimped PSP. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
-
Jinfash: Yeah, that makes sense. I think I read it on Yahoo Answers or something so I thought that it might not be true, so whatever.
Are there any sites that sell PSPs that are definitely hackable or hacked? Ebay isn't very good for that... Or should I just look for one in a store?
-
Hey Guybrush, I am looking to sell my PSP. It's already got CFW installed and it comes with an 8 gig memstick. There are some tiny scratches, but nothing to bad. I'm looking for $125 shipped for it. If you're interested let me know. I can ship it out Monday (and Monday will be the only day I can do that until April 17).
Pic to show I'm not making it up. :P

PSP SNES emulator sucks ass. The Wii emulator actually runs DQ1&2 and 3 at a normal speed and pace, plus I get to use my big ol TV
-
wow, that's a hot deal ^^^
Guybrush, if you don't take him up on his offer, you're distinguished mentally-challenged :D
-
PSP SNES emulator sucks ass.
Yep, and I'm pretty sure it's just because of incompetent devs. Arcade (CPS-1, CPS-2 and Neo-Geo), Genesis, NES, MSX, and of course PSone emulation runs pretty badass on the thing though.
I still have the Phat myself but I'm considering getting a slim because I'm finding it so unwieldy to carry around.
Alsom get a MicroSD to Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter too since MicroSDs are cheaper than MSPDs by quite a bit.
-
PS1 emulator is the best because Sony was the one to make it lol
-
How does SCUMM run on PSP? I've been meaning to dip into that because I've never played a single game from that group, and I know they have a DS version or something like that which I've always been interested in...
-
no FBA love?
Yeah I haven't checked out emulation on the PSP for a while and I noticed that someone ported FBA... Does this run just as well as the standalone CPS2/NeoGeo emulators from awhile back?
-
How well does the PSP function as a music player? My iPod broke and I need a new music player anyway, so archie's offer is really tempting.

Not bad. The interface is nice and the PSP has some DSP effects.
The main concerns are memory space and the overall bulky design of the PSP. You won't have much room on the memory stick for songs once you start putting games on it and you'll look like a dork if you're listening to music with a PSP.
-
I was doing some searching and apparently some guy found a fix for the SNES emulator.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/688923
Could someone test this?
-
the SNES emulator sucks? the one i'm using works fine for DQ 3 at least. (haven't tested any orther games).
-
Sorry, there is no magic version. SNES emu is poop if you want fullspeed.
-
The SNES emu update that was released last year works fine for a lot of games, but for games like Super Turrican it still chugs a lot. Final Fight, Super Mario All Stars, Mega Man X, Tiny Toons, Dragon Quest I&II, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, and others ran at full speed for me.
-
FBA is on PSP?! Is there a compatibility list? How well does stuff run?
-
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Snes9xTYLsmcm-Test-5-27-05-08/pg/49/aid/120593
works great for most games
-
Does not work well with Yoshi's Island or Tetris Attack = insta-fail
-
ugh, seriously, how hard can it be to run the snes emu when everything else is working better? unless there's something about the snes I'm missing.
I brought that point up once on gaf and got yelled at for (1) being ungrateful for what we have and (2) some reason why Snes is harder to emulate than others. Doesn't explain why Snes emulation on the PSP got abandoned though.
-
so is there any truth to the redesigned psp rumor? i'm interested in getting another
-
One last question.
Would it be more worth it to wait for the Pandora (and pay like ~$200 more) or get a PSP? The Pandora is really tempting... Or would it be more worth it to get a PSP and wait for a second-run Pandora?
-
the pandora doesn't play PSP games and I'd be surprised if it could handle PS1 games as well.
-

truth, but the nature of the redesign isn't public yet
-

Play the GBA versions.
-

According to this (http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=41897) it can. Plus the SNES emulation is better AFAIK
I'm really torn on this. I'd hate to get a PSP and then have the PSP2 come out a year or two from now and be stuck with an abandoned console.
-
If you get a PSP-2000 now that can use CFW, it would be worth it for all the emulators and other features. If the PSP 3000 still hasn't been cracked, I don't think the next one will be either.
-
Youre not seriously gonna buy a Pandora
-
Youre not seriously gonna buy a Pandora
I really need someone to talk me out of it more than anything. I don't really want to spend $300+ on it, but like I said, it's tempting me.

$125 vs. $300 :-*

Don't buy the Pandora
I was just doing some searching and you can get a decent netbook with 320x the hard drive space for less... forget that idea.
I think I'll buy archie's PSP. Thanks to everyone in this thread for their advice.
-
FBA is pretty shitty. Everything seems to run way too slowly.
But just the fact that CPS3 is working on it is pretty cool!
-
what exactly does the Pandora have over the PSP anyway? PSP has a bunch of emulators, web browser, media shit and actual PSP games. Pandora has the promise that in the future it might be able to play PS1 games with 3 frame skip and no sound.
-
bu bu bu but you can run linux on it!! :o
-
Eh, if you want an emulation machine that's not a PSP, get a Wiz. The specs are superior to the PSP and since FBA already runs really well on the GP2X, you can assume that the Wiz will have even better emulation support. Projects made on prototype units are already very promising. You also get to play official Wiz software, and GP has stated that a lot of their titles will have English language support this gen.
Pandora has a ton of potential, but goddamn, $300 with no commercial software?
-
My only gripe with the Wiz really is how Gamepark have been jerking around the release date so much. Oh, and there is that little issue with how it looks.
All the trimmings make it look like a damn Chinese MP4 player, and right now (pending actually trying out the device) I'm not feeling the D-pad look on the face buttons.
-
People have said that it's a very solid piece of hardware, much improved over the 2X. The delays have been related to upgrading the internal flash player and some interface tweaks.
That picture is a bad representation of the D-Pad, here's a close-up.

Here's a good video comparing the size to the GB Micro, plus showing off some beta emulators on a prototype unit:

A couple years ago, I was obsessed (for all of 2 weeks) with getting my hands on an original GamePark... interesting to see they are still around and making systems.
I actually wanted the GamePark to play Astonisha Story :-\
-
does anyone remember that Chinese GB Micro clone thing posted a while back? I ordered that and it's actually good for GBA, NES, CPS-1, CPS-2 and Neo Geo games. SNES emulation isn't that great unless you mess around with frame skip or use the speed hack and Genesis emulation is almost unplayable, but other than those two it's good for $85. It's not the size of a Gameboy Micro, btw; it's probably around the same size or smaller than that Wiz is. And battery life is really good for these types of devices.

How's the CPS-2 emulation? Can you run, say Street Fighter Alpha 2 without frameskipping?

PSP Update
sure someone has mentioned this already, but Resistance PSP thingy...
ANOTHER PSP triumph. Assisted up the wazoo but already much better than Resistance Poo.
:bow PSP :bow2
PSP is just kicking so much fucking ass lately, it's insane. I see Resistance as "part three" in a trilogy that began with Syphon Filter Dark Mirror; I think I'm going to finish that up, play second game, and then get to Resistance.

CPS1, CPS2, and Neo-Geo are all essentially perfect! :D

I tried Alpha 2 and it's unplayable for me. It needs like 4+ frame skip to get close to normal speed. Even SF2CE isn't perfect on the CPS1 emulator. But then something like Aliens vs Predator or Mega Man Power battles are fine.
at least KOF 98 works pretty good, which doesn't mean much since the d-pad is crappy for fighting games.
-
i'm using a psp fat (bought on launch day, woo) and i just started to look into the emulation stuff and it's damn nice, once i figured out i needed a separate install thing from dark alex.
playing the mvs fighting games were a pain because of the d-pad on my unit, but everything else was really nice. puzzle bobble is such a fun game

Huh, I see. I'll probably wait until (if ever) the homebrew community improves on the emulators. Shame as from what I've read the hardware's quite capable.

yeah, if the homebrew community gets behind it, it could get pretty awesome. Right now I'm happy having every NES, a bunch of GBA games and almost all neo geo games on one device.
what games run well and what don't is pretty weird though. Street Fighter Alpha 2 runs like shit, but most other CPS-2 games run fine, like puzzle fighter. Then on the SNES emulator you have Super Mario World which runs like shit, but Donkey Kong Country runs fine.
TV output is shit though. I tried it at a friends house and not only is it a blurry mess, it also crops off the bottom of the screen.
Genesis emulation is still the biggest shame. Speed and sound are near perfect, but the image is tearing like crazy.
-

What emulators and what versions are you using? I have no problems running SFA2 and SFZ2A. There are no problems with the speed; the game runs perfectly. Are you on a PSP fat still or a 2000?
EDIT: I checked my versions; I'm using a PSP 2000 and running CPS1PSP 2.2.5, CPS2PSP 2.3.1, and MVSPSP 2.2.4. With MVSPSP, I found that the later version after 2.2.4 ran choppier for me.
-
I know the PSP is all good, what I'm talking about is this thing: http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=28251.0
I still have my PSP as my main portable emulation system, this a320 thing is something small and solid enough that I can take everywhere.
