When did Popcap become such an awesome developer? ???
-
apparently, the notoriously hard to please Edge magazine scored it a 9.
Peggle killer? It just might be. At the very least, I've got that damn song stuck in my head.
"I used to play football"
-
I really liked it until I realized 75% in that it's a tower defense game?
My most hated genre of them all ;_;
Still might get it because the song rocks and I like zombies and I like plants.

:yuck Tower defense.
-
Yeah TD gameplay is kind of a downer, but the entire premise is so crazy that I can't help but to be intrigued.

Tower defense is just above RTS in terms of my most hated genre.
-
I have yet to play a tower defense game, it was only a month ago that I first heard of the whole genre...

Try Crystal Defenders on XBLA. Very casual and familiar.
Both RTS and Tower Defense games suck shit though, so dont get too into it
-
I'm an RTS hater from the get-go (turn based FO LIFE) but even then, I sure do like me some Tower Defense games. Defense Grid and Pixeljunk Monsters are worth their weight in gold I tells ya.
-
:bow POPCAP :bow2
This looks fucking amazing.
Also Crystal Defenders IS SHIT. Dont try it. Just google "Desktop Tower Defense" and play that. Don't listen to demi though, TD games rule. Try out Defense Grid on Steam too, it's the best TD game in a while.
-
Pre-purchase on Steam now. You get Heavy Metal Deluxe for free too.

9/10 AGAIN
As with games like Peggle and Bejeweled, PopCap has tested and retested the learning curve until it's so perfectly tuned it's almost creepy, setting a pace that's constantly challenging but rarely too punitive, with a handful of wild-card moments to vitalise each encounter, like the sudden heavy-attack waves that are strung through every level. Elsewhere, the brilliantly simple sunlight-collection idea ensures that, from the very start, you're always multi-tasking between laying defences and collecting funds, and you can never simply sit back and watch events unfold as you can do in so many other tower defence games.
It's for reasons such as these that the tense and always adorable Plants vs. Zombies is a masterful combination of serious strategy and cartoonish delights - and by adding mini-games, survival modes and a shop, PopCap is practically rubbing it in. The result is as fresh and accessible as Super Mario, and as refined and considered as Left 4 Dead, wading into another established genre and polishing the central ideas in a way that will make it a hard act to follow. Despite the undead, you'll still be able to sleep with the lights off, but the midnight oil will be burning long and hard at the developer's increasingly frustrated competitors.
-
I pre-ordered it today along with Killing Floor. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL IT UNLOCKS TOMORROW WOOO ZOMBIES AND PLANTS AND LAWNS
-
the demo is pretty amazing, i likeeee

awesome game, my internets been down for a day or so but i managed to download this before it did.
i think for 10$ its a great deal:
You have adventure mode that gets progressively harder as you learn the basics
then theirs 20 mini games, id say maybe two are just harder version of themselves
then 18 puzzles which get pretty hard. Then you have survival mode which you play like adventure only in waves of 5 or 7, changing your "deck" in between (they show you what types of zombies you will face.
In adventure their seems to be 6 places
Front Yard ( day and night )
Back yard (2 water rows, day and night)
Roof (day and night)
first you start off in the front yard in which you are given a sunflower which makes "sun" which is basically the currency to buy new plants for defense, during the day you can also pick up suns icons that fall from the sky making it a bit easier then playing at night.
At night you cant (at first) rely on sunflowers so you use these mushrooms that make smaller bits of sun at first so building is a bit harder. Also you can use some night specific plants that are weak but cost nothing. Also to make night harder their seems to be random gravestones that take up a planting spot in the ground. During the final wave, if you haven't got rid of these graves you get bonus zombies coming at you, which is bad depending on where they are.
For most of the adventure mode you cant use night plants during the day but you do get a "coffee bean" that will wake then up for use later on, so its at a 75 more sun cost.
eventually the zombies tire of assaulting your front yard so they move to the back which has a pool for the 2 middle rows (every level has 5 rows) which introduces water plants.
You can plant regular plants on the water if you lay down a lily pad first for 25 sun. (which do nothing on their own), some zombies are water specific and fast.
Lastly the roof which is very much the hardest. you are given 4 columns of planting pots which are basically like lily pads for land plants. So if a zombies eats your plants you have to replace the pot before the plant. And all 5 rows are pots unlike the back yard where only two rows have this dynamic.
Anyway the game is really fun, highly suggest to anyone who even passingly enjoys tower(lawn) defense type games
anyway heres a screenie of all the different plant types from the almanac you find in game which lists plant types and zombie types (im missing only two, one is special and doesnt take up a slot here i think)
oh also theirs a shop to buy more plant slots and extra stuff like a zen garden to grow plants for profit, this game has soo much content
-
Game is really awesome, but seems pretty easy so far. I've finished world 2 and haven't died yet and I am shit with TD games.
-
I literally played this game until sunrise today. I didn't mean to, but damned if time doesn't go quick with this sucker.
It has a lot of content, but I think the campaign wears a little thin in the middle.
The game doesn't really feel tuned for all the unlockable upgrades though. Once you have the pea-shooters that blast like 4-8 rounds at a time and the upgraded sunflowers, everything becomes pretty trivial. The "Hard" modes in Survival seem far easier than the campaign did, since in campaign you don't really have the time or the currency to upgrade all your stuff.
-
yeah i didnt lose once until the last few levels, some really annoying zombie types are introduced near the end
also once you complete adventure once it seems like you get more swarms coming quicker and that crazy guy chooses three random plants that you must use to mix things up.
-
The only challenge comes from one of the minigames where it gives you 5000 Sun Energy and makes you survive 5 very brutal rounds. Once you've unlocked extra slots for seed packs and a couple of the more important upgrades, the game becomes kinda trivial unless it's in a mode like that where you're inherently limited.
The worst enemy types are the ladder zombies, pogo zombies, and dolphin zombies since they can all scale your walls and fuck up your shit pretty quickly.
-
steamfags itt
-
yeah i found it too easy as well, hopefully it gets more challenging
i do like some of the basic strategy though, like putting up a wheat bag thing so the pole vault guy goes over it, but then putting a mine behind the wheat bag thing so it lands on it.
-
its a walnut
get it?
-
im so distinguished mentally-challenged :dur
-
I agree with others that it's easy going so far, but then again so was Chuzzle, and that game gets BALLZ HARD when you get to the later levels.
-
dling free trial now

Played through the trial, but I'm not feeling it. It's alright I guess. :-\
-
omg achievements added today :omg
-
yeah i just noticed that :o
-
I'm really glad a lot of games are getting Steam achievements these days. I scrolled through the list of games with achievements on steam and it's a pretty decent size including some nice indie games. Makes me more inclined to buy some of them and buy through steam. I'd pay an extra $5 and get the steam version for a game that has achievements over the same game without achievements at a weekend sale elsewhere.
Might pick up Cogs soon because of achievements. Indiegames.com had really good things to say about it. Achievements will also make me grab Aquaria next time it drops price again.

Played for about 3 hours last night. Good game.
It's wierd how pefectly tuned in the difficulty level is. I never die, but I never feel like I am just breezing through the game. I wish they would have thrown some insane spikes in waves of zombies so I would have to change my strategy a bit.
-
i (barely) beat 20 waves of survival for the achieve, after that it becomes amazingly brutal and hopeless
one thing i will say for a tip is you NEED those spikes and their upgrade, most worthwhile thing to take by far in survival endless. that and defending water is easy so use it for sun farming instead of land, not once in 20 waves was defending the water a problem, as opposed to dealing with those fucking digger zombies on land.

9 in EDGE, that's Popcap level of quality for you haters.
Post the help screen, folks, I don't buy TD games.
Get the demo from popcap, gay. I don't like TD games either. This is like. . .Peggle simple to play.
-
this is barely a TD game. its more of an RTS
-
This game is ridiculously entertaining.
-
The game gets pretty rough during the hard survival missions. I died during hard survival 5 because I was stupid and didn't fortify my top row well enough.
-
those fucking penguin zombies give me the shits
-
I played to 1-7 before I got bored. It's cute and fun but it's tower defense and I am an ADD gamer who gets bored of just sitting and waiting. I wish there was a way to speed up the oncoming zombies so you can hurry up and finish a level once you have a good defense built.
I do think the variety is pretty good so far. I'll probably keep playing but I doubt I can do more than a few levels a day before feeling over it.
Also I don't care if you are a budget game, give an option for widescreen support damnit. Especially since you will be widescreen when you are on XBLA eventually.
-
This is kind of addicting.

I can't even do the zombotany puzzle mission, though I only tried once. Is there a trick?
-
Yeah I liked Peggle too. What else have they done that's really fun?

Zuma and Bookworm Adventures are my two of my favorite Popcap games.

I ended up buying this. What the fuck - I've never bought Peggle, Bejeweled or any of those lame PopCap games that middle-aged housewives and nerds play. :-\
-
another victim of internet nerd hype
peggle is honestly a much better game
-
Not a victim of anything? This was the best ten dollars I ever spent!

Yeah, you're an internet nerd. Face it. Deal with it. Love it.

I'm no nerd.

Survival Mode is a great challenge, though it seems like at some point you are doomed to get fucked by a bad combination of enemy types. Usually I get done in by the zamboni/tractor dudes that are vulnerable to ground spikes combined with the giant ogre types that destroy the spikes with a couples swats. At some point you can't lay down spikes fast enough and the vehicles start to get through and it's the beginning of the end.
The main problem is that it seems like there's never any time to rebuild if your shit gets fucked up, and there are so many enemies that require you to spend Sun Energy just to kill them (balloon dudes, zamboni/tractor)
-
:piss zambonis :piss2
loving puzzle mode. almost got my 9 slots :hyper

I better buy this now
-
It plays on every PC imaginable and it's cheaper, why would you want to buy it on XBLA?
-
I'm not actually going to buy it. Tower Defense games are garbage.
-
will buy this again
