Rare megamouth shark caught, then eaten
Filipino fishermen refused WWF plea; it was one of only 41 documented

MANILA, Philippines - Fishermen in the Philippines accidentally caught and later ate a megamouth shark, one of the rarest fishes in the world with only 40 others recorded to have been encountered, the World Wildlife Fund said Tuesday.

The 1,100-pound, 13-foot-long megamouth died while struggling in the fishermen's net on March 30 off Burias island in the central Philippines. It was taken to nearby Donsol in Sorsogon province, where it was butchered and eaten, said Gregg Yan, spokesman for WWF-Philippines.

Yan said WWF Donsol Project Manager Elson Aca took pictures of the megamouth and tried to dissuade the fishermen from eating it. Shark meat is the main ingredient in a local delicacy.

Yan said the fish was tagged "Megamouth 41" — the 41st megamouth recorded in the world — by the Florida Museum of Natural History. It was the eighth reported encountered in Philippine seas.

It was already dead!

That's kind of irrelevant.  It wasn't as if the WWF told them that it was a rare fish after the fact.  There's only been forty documented in history!

What was the WWF going to do with the fish? mount it in a museum? at least some poor fishermen went to bed with a full stomach that day.

You never watch a science program a day in your life, did you?

Marine biologists can learn so much information about not just the animal itself, but the entire ecosystem, by properly dissecting and taking tissue samples postmortem.

I bet if the WWF thought to offer like 10 Snickers bars, the fishermen would've taken the offer.

Rice and potatoes are bland. If you start adding expensive stuff like salt you might as well start eating at Red Lobster.

Unlike a lot of the useless hippie-filled tree-hugging dope-smoking organisations, WWF are pretty awesome - they get a lot of stuff done through constructive mutually beneficial consultation.
