If you don't watch anime and don't like animu you should watch this show Baccano. I just finished watching it and it's pretty good. It's not some 10/10 show that will change your mind on anime, but it's based off a novel and you can tell it was a neat book worth a read and the anime is a good adaptation of that.
The story won't make any sense until the end 13eps in, but it's enjoyable along the way and the end is flawless in closing everything properly and making the plot good. It's kind of a mix between a Twilight Zone ep + Tales from the Crypt ep with a dose of WACKY JAPPY that could only work in anime form and makes it fit the format.
The only negative besides having to give the show the benefit of the doubt during the start episodes where nothing makes much sense is that the show is a not afraid to be gorey in its plenty of violence. It's not necessarily mean violence, but just very graphic at times and it means you probably shouldn't watch this with your 6 year old kid or something, though they probably wouldn't be able to put together the plot either.
Verdict: Worth Watching.
PS. For the animu angle, it's Onosaka Masaya's best role/acting since Vash in Trigun.

Also, it's short and to the point with no filler at 13eps which means it doesn't require a lot of wasted time from the viewer. This is a rarity among anime.
The US dvds are only partially out. 4 dvds total with 2 out and 2 to go. Of course you can find all the eps online in the non-official way.

Hmmm, will download if I can find the episodes in mkv.

Bebpo get the 3 extra OVAs they released.
It basically continues the story of what happened after the whole ordeal.
-
Yeah, I'm grabbing them. Will watch tomorrow.

The only thing that means is that anime in general is so horrible that when you have a show that is actually good and makes sense in the end, suddenly it's one of the best shows in the decade.
I sort of agree with that because anime is terrible and the standards have been set incredibly low, but I don't think the show is amazing or anything. It's just a good watch. I'd give it ***/****

I've been wanting to watch this for a while now, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

loud chick and her loud boyfriend pissed me off
maybe I'll continue watching it one day

Scrapped Princess and/or Planetes are my series of the decade so far.

I'd have to go with Kino's Journey, followed by Stand Alone Complex, Planetes and maybe Haibane Renmei or Ergo Proxy.

Awww, I actually liked how they placed these two absurd wacky jappy characters in the middle of what would otherwise be a dark and serious tale in order to keep the tone of the show fun despite the strong violence.

yeah, they ruin it for me. I'm just so sick of comic relief characters in what would otherwise be a pretty damn good show. Removing them would make it one of those "transcends anime that you can recommend to your friends" kinds of shows.

If an anime doesn't make you feel at least slightly unconfortable or embarrassed to be watching it, then what's the point? I could just watch Lost or Law & Order or something.

Slightly uncomfortable is fine...I mean, it is a product of completely different culture, so it will be a little awkward. There's comedy anime that goes over the top. the foil characters that scream and act distinguished mentally-challenged just kills my enjoyment of what's pretty good and humorous enough on its own.
the best example I can think of is old Retronauts episodes with Jenn Frank. The normal retronauts crew is already the right mix of funny and serious, but then Jenn Frank gets in there and the retardometer shoots through the roof.

Ok himuro, you win.
After watching the OAV ep14-16, I'd definitely put Baccano in my top10 anime list. They did an amazing job at continuing a finished tale and making it even more satisfying with a perfect wrap up to the entire show. I wish other shows could do follow ups this well. Then we wouldn't have all those terrible sequels and spinoffs we usually get!
I'll definitely be picking up the US dvds once they do a boxset. This is a show I'd like to re-watch down the line. I wonder if they'll be blu-rays eventually. It's a 2007 show and I think most stations had transitioned to HD by then.

this show is the real deal, I give it a strong A-
can be watched with minimal embarassment (SMT game, Cowboy Bebop) which is kind of unprecedented for a modern anime show
very satisfying and actually manages to not completely fucking screw the pooch in the last episodes re: plot

I'm curious about this and Guren Ragann or whatever the romanization is. I'll scope this out, thanks.

Gurren Lagann. It's insanely over-the-top and awesome.
