Guildford, UK., 8th April- Harmonix, the world’s leading developer of music-based games, MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), and distribution partner Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced plans today to release Rock Band Unplugged exclusively for the PSP (PlayStation®Portable) system. The game will be available in North America and Europe beginning June 9, 2009, with software retailing for £24.99 in the United Kingdom.
“Rock Band Unplugged reinvents band gameplay while staying true to the authentic feel of the Rock Band console games,” said Bob Picunko, Senior Vice President of Electronic Games for MTV Games. “Harmonix delivers innovation with every game they develop and we are excited to continue our long-list of industry firsts with the Rock Band in-game wireless music store on the PSP system.”
Rock Band Unplugged creates a full band experience in the palm of your hand by combining traditional beat match gameplay with key elements from both Rock Band and Rock Band 2, such as overdrive and chords. Your hands are the “peripherals” in Rock Band Unplugged, allowing you to take direct control of the lead/bass guitars, drums and vocals. In addition, players can expect a rich Rock Band experience with fully functional modes like World Tour, Band Survival and Warm Up and a robust character creator for full customization.
Rock Band Unplugged will feature over 40 master-recordings including nine exclusive new songs that will debut on the PSP system before being offered as downloadable content for console versions of Rock Band. Plus, Rock Band Unplugged will include the first fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content on the PSP system in the North American and European markets, leveraging the PSP system’s wireless capabilities. The in-game store will be powered by PlayStation®Network, and players will be able to use their existing PlayStation Network account to purchase tracks, similar to the Rock Band console experience. PSP system owners will also have the option of purchasing tracks via PlayStation®Store on the PC.
The following tracks will launch exclusively through Rock Band Unplugged on the PSP system for a limited time before becoming downloadable content for the other platforms:
• 3 Doors Down - "Kryptonite"
• AFI - "Miss Murder"
• Alice in Chains - "Would?"
• Audioslave - "Gasoline"
• Black Tide - "Show Me the Way"
• Blink 182 - "What's My Age Again"
• Freezepop - "Less Talk More Rokk"
• Jackson 5 - "ABC"
• Tenacious D - "Rock Your Socks"
Rock Band is the ultimate platform for music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before. The game challenges players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune – all while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals. Featuring the most master recordings of any music game ever by the world’s biggest rock artists, Rock Band includes tracks that span every genre of rock ranging from alternative and classic rock, to heavy metal and punk.
Rock Band Unplugged is developed by Harmonix in partnership with Backbone Entertainment, a Foundation 9 Entertainment studio, and based on the award-winning Rock Band series of games.

Looks awesome, new Amplitude for PSP.

Wow. Guitar Hero destroyed even on handheld systems.
-
Interesting. They actually did realtime backgrounds in the PSP game (unlike the Wii and PS2 versions of RB where they simply used pre-recorded video).

trailer and other info there. It actually has instrument switching like in Frequency; looks awesome.
Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida was also announced for America yesterday as Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do To Deserve This?

One of my favourite moments in gaming was the rush as you'd complete all full tracks in Frequency. Such an awesome game.
-
So excited for this, RB beats GH yet again.
-
This looks like more of a sequel to frequency and amplitude...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Great games.
This might push me over the edge to get a PSP. I see a Rock Band PSP bundle is incoming, but its the psp 3000.
-
Will have to get my hands on a PSP when this comes out.
-
Also, that is an atrocious list. Kryptonite? I heard that plenty enough on the radio. They just had to reintroduce it though.
-
How do they map the buttons I wonder
-
Everything is done on the four face buttons and dpad.
There is a video on the playstation blog link.
-
Yeah, one face button per colour of stream, plus the dpad to hop between tracks.
"hop"? buh?
how can you do chords if you're "hopping"?
I vote:
Left
Up
Triangle
Circle
per Bemani portable standard for the past 10 years :D
-
shoulder buttons?
-
shoulder buttons?
works for me
-
im guessing its the shoulder buttons. amplitude was three face buttons (or three shoulder buttons) and dpad to move tracks.
-
I hate Rockband/Guitar Hero.
But I'll be getting this.
-
I hate Rockbang. But I'll be getting this.
Sounds kinky.
-
Hehe, did a fast edit. :P
-
This is kewl and all, but I won't be re-buying my DLC on PSP.
-
Oh shit, it is Amplitude/Frequency for the PSP. Fucking awesome.
Seconded, this is awesome, I thought they were going to do a "press a trigger to pull the guitar string" thing but going the Amplitude route is WAY awesomer.
PULL THE STRING
PULL THE STRING!!!

So am I an idiot or a misunderstood genius that I would rather spend 200 dollars on this game and PSP than Rock Band 2 bundle for a console.
-
This is kewl and all, but I won't be re-buying my DLC on PSP.
Maybe you can share between PS3/PSP?
Nah, I doubt they'd be that smart :(
-
This is kewl and all, but I won't be re-buying my DLC on PSP.
Yeah, the one thing I hope they account for is that most people won't want to pay for the same song twice.

Actually, it would not shock me if Harmonix managed that. Possibly with a RB1-style "migration" license fee. That'd be... acceptable. Of course, even with a 4GB memory stick, it would probably also necessitate some kind of file management between PC or PS3 rather than keep ALL of the DLC on the memory stick.
...I've just realized this a problem I am happy I don't have to solve. I'm curious how they'll address it, is all.
In other news, I tried to play Guitar Hero (DS) at a Best Buy during my recent vacation to the USA... it is not playable. Squeezing a DS to press buttons while tweaking one's neck to stare at the top screen is not analogous to the feeling of playing a guitar. It is not fun.
Meanwhile, Frequency and stuff was MADE to be played with a controller, so I am soopah hopeful.

you know this game leaked a few days back, right?
I tried it out and it's pretty fun. I'll buy it when it comes out. Weirdest part is that despite being played with the d-pad and buttons, the notes are still very similar to what you would play if it was with that instrument in the full game. The mode where you play all 4 at the same time is actually really hard. And they have the option to unlock all songs at the start without having to insert a code.
-
I wonder how they'll implement multiplayer, if you can play all the roles by yourself.
-
DJ Max Portable 2 is still the ultimate portable music game, even with the goofy korean tracks
Patel would back me up if he posted here anymore :(
-
I never played DJ Max Portable 2, but the first game is great. The only song I liked was called Oblivion or something like that.
-

There is no multiplayer.

Well. There it is, then. :-/

umm, this is "out" and it's spectacular. Medium is easy, but hard reminds of trying Guitar Hero 1 for the first time on hard--it's fucking nuts and you don't think you'll ever get it.
It's everything I hoped for, aside from a few things:
1) tracks drop out of the song when you mess up a phrase. So if you screw up a guitar part, you don't "clear" the phase and the drum track might start up, but while you're trying to clear a guitar phase, the drums will drop out as you miss notes. That just screws me up even more. I wish there was an option for a different indicator.
2) No real mode for single instruments. There's a "warm up" mode that scores you, but it's not integrated into the main game. On the other hand, without the actual instruments, it's quite a bit easier to play individual tracks.
3) the track listing seems real "safe." i dunno, it's good, but not great. Not enough exclusive songs.
gonna be flying overseas for about 15 hours today/tomorrow and I'm gonna be playing the hell out of this :D
-
have you tried expert? I was a bit upset that they make you do things like hold left and up at the same time instead of just making the notes faster and all that. It gets too confusing at that point.
-
nah, haven't even bothered with expert yet.
-
I beat it on Expert. It's easy... smh
-
This isn't Amplitude or Frequency and anyone who calls it one of those games is dumb and never played those games.
The mere fact that none of the tracks are muted when they're not being activated makes this not a Amp or Freq game.

anyway, beat it on the plane, it's fun, but there aren't enough songs and I don't feel like waiting for them to leak one or two songs at a time for $1 a piece. I guess I'll check torrent sites in a few months if I decide to play it again.
-
This is fantastic.
-
Yeah, it got a bit old for me too. I still like it, but I can't sit down and play a bunch of songs back to back. Every now and again I'll play it. My problem is that it constantly feels like you are just barely making it to the next track and constantly need to be rushing instead of just enjoying a single one. Frequency and Amplitude had a better flow to them.
-
Im glad to hear that then. As one of the loudest people who vocode Harmonix over abandoning those games, I happy I dont have to buy a PSP for this game them.
-
i like it a lot, but i tend to play psp games in 15-30 minute bursts, so i don't spend enough time with it in one sitting to get tired of it
$2 dlc songs is straight bullshit, though
-
There's /nobody/ going to be buying $2 songs for PSP if they're not even playable in some multiplayer format.
