Lets see, what is wrong with every JRPG so far this gen?
1. Boring battle system
2. Horrible writing made for teens and the psychologically undeveloped
3. Voice acting by all the people who do VA for anime (i.e. that really rushed awkward style of delivery that was originally meant to fit a bunch of English into a small time frame, but that is now lauded by anime fans.)
4. Throw away stories that seem no different than the stories they did in the SNES gen, but with more CG and whiny bullshit
5. Made by the Japanese
6. Levels of saccharine animu that has been shown to cause cancer in lab rats
What's right with Penny arcade?
1. Fun active battle system with fights that are fairly difficult
2. Better writing than almost all video games, genuinely funny.
3. A minimal amount of voice acting that isn't embarrassing to listen to
4. Throw away story that allows you to cross paths with and kill mimes, the homeless, and fruit fuckers
5. Not made by the Japanese
6. Good art
Of course, the downsides are that you have to click on everything to get cheesemints and that it's episodic and expensive. It's not a continuous world and the overworld is essentially a menu, which makes the progression almost like a beat-em up. On the plus side, what's there is detailed and interesting. Whatever, take my free spacebucks...just keep me away from the bullshit.

I tried the demo of the first ep and the writing was not funny and the battles were boring. :(
BUT I thought the way they took your create-a-character and turned him into a 2d flash cutscene version was fuck awesome technology and very impressive.

ROFL, not really. Go back to CAG, lamer

The demo has you fighting the easy-as-fuck battles. After the tutorial, the difficulty increases by a lot, enemies start using buffs/debuffs, and generally doing ridiculous damage if you don't time blocks. So there's a huge juggling act once you *omg spoilers* get gabe and tycho in your party...between waiting for regular/specials to charge and blocking. It gets tense and I've died a few times. The good part is that death isn't game over, you just get booted out of the fight minus whatever items you used.

Go back to jerking it star ocean 4 cutscenes and buying achievements on ebay

I'll probably give it a shot when all the eps are out and discounted on steam or XBLA/PSN.

I got bored before the demo ended. It was probably the most bored I've been playing a jrpg-style game since Opoona. Actually, I think I played Opoona after the Penny Arcade game. Opoona retroactively became the first and most boring jrpg I've ever played.

This is a troll thread. Listen to me, these games are trash. As someone who introduced 50 Cent into your life, I know what entertains a person.

Lets put it this way-- the JRPGs that have come out recently seem to have a start up time. Like you go in to a ToV, Star Ocean, Lost Odyssey, etc. thread and say "I've played the first 4 hours and this shit sucks." Then someone usually responds with "keep going! It gets really good around the 10 hour mark." Well, with this game, you beat the demo area + a bit further ahead, then you get to the good stuff, in about a half hour.
-
Nah, Vesperia is still the best.

pedophilia is illegal, you know?

I enjoyed them. The battle system is fuck awesome and the humor is classic PA. The adventuring part is pretty weak though. especially in the second game.
-
It's not better than Lost Odyssey, but it's better than shit like SO4 and IU. Not that being better than them is any sort of accomplishment either.
-
The gameplay is passable but I was very disappointed by how unfunny it was.
-
needed to be more awkward moments with anne-claire, amirite?
anyway, its clear EB loves the next gen RPGs and would not understand P-A's greatness:

Huh. Well, I liked PA Adventures and I think I'm going to buy it now that it's on the cheap.
Keep in mind I'm also a Nintendo loving, kiddy diddling, the-kind-of-guy-that-would-have-an-avatar-that-demi-would-feel-needs-banning fagurt, however.

I'll chime in on the "it's better than JRPG" wagon, but I dislike JRPGs in general. I bought P-A because I wanted to support a small, non-Final Fantasy RPG type game, and Tycho and Gabe as well. However, as you say, the game gets pretty hard not too far in. I can't manage to flip to the right character in time to block most attacks, and I end up fumbling A LOT of the block/parry moves.
It's got style and in-jokes galore. I just don't like getting trounced as much as this game likes trouncing me.

JRPGs have been a downhill slide since the PS1 era, although there have been a few notable exceptions. That's why I've been mainly playing Western, PC-style RPGs lately, particularly since there's a lot that I missed out on from 1995 to present.
