Enemies are dumb as fucking bricks. You can carry an enemy from one end over to the "rose thorn bush" and not get a single scratch on you

For a game that runs on a combo system, its slow and clunky as shit

Its a good game. You get used to the controls pretty quickly and the enemies are slightly aggressive for a reason. Whats more important is learning to group them next to props and multiplier items. But wait, there's more! Occassionally they'll spawn a few bad motherfuckers that put up a real fight. Its extremely satisfying to shoulder ram a bullcrocker onto a rosebush and wail on him before he unlatches himself. Alot of the weapons are sickenly satisfying. Swinging a blood-soaked bat with waggle, hearing the fleshy crunching sounds of bones breaking, rumble activating and watching your human projectile knock back a crowd, all in slow motion. Goregasmic.

Going through the game the first time is like playing the world's longest tutorial. Still, there's a lot to like, but it does get MUCH better after you beat it.

I liked the game a lot, but THIS. Stupidest decision in the entire game design. Why the hell do you have to hold the damn button. Imagine streets of rage if you had to hold punch the entire time you held a weapon.

NMH is a waaaaaay better game. Madworld has a much deeper and better combat system though.

I agree with the above statement to a tee. MadWorld has the elements to catapult it above the excellent NMH, but some boneheaded control issues (and, most frustratingly, not involving Wii Motion) cripple some of the enjoyment. This game desperately needed some customizability regarding its control scheme. Two excellent games on the Wii, no doubt, but the difference in quality is simple; NMH nailed the controls, MadWorld almost nails it.

The ONLY thing it did right was detecting high and low attacks.

edit: Madworld is guilty of some indiscriminate waggle here and there, but I have actually failed some qte because I did the wrong motion.

Like it actually has great story with lots of awesome cutscenes. It lets you build up your character with stats and money and things that makes doing things actually matter. It has awesome music. Mainly though it's a full length adventure kind of like Psychonauts. NMH also has far more variety with its levels and mini-games than Madworld which is about doing the same combos with the same types of surfaces over and over from start to finish with little new stuff as the game progresses.

Madworld has good combat, but then it's short as hell. There is NO POINT to doing anything because who cares if you score a ton or nothing? You can't buy anything, can't level up anything. I mean wtf. You should have been able to use your scores to earn money to spend at the shop between stages like God Hand. Otherwise, why would you stick around in a level after you've activated the boss challenge? There is just zero incentive to do anything more than the minimum to get to the boss. The game has no replay value. I played some of hard mode and it doesn't even start you at stage 1. You're just jumping around your old game with nothing to unlock and nothing to gain and it was like....what's the point? For me it was boring playing it after I finished the game, even on hard mode. There was just....no point to playing anymore.

So yeah, I really liked Madworld the first time I played it. Unfortunately that was for a total of like 4 hours before the credits rolled and then there is no incentive to play AT ALL. Also the story, while good, could've been fleshed out a lot more. NMH has gameplay problems. Everything Suda has gameplay problems. But I would rate Killer7 as Genius out of 10 and NMH as Genius-1 out of 10. What Suda does with the story, presentation, and just fun factor makes up for all the flaws in the game. Plus NMH is full length, has tons of collectables, has stats, has money, has everything you expect from a full fledged title. Madworld just does not feel like a full game. It's like they rushed it to the market and if given another 6 months development it would have been a full title. Definitely worth playing, but an 8/10 when it could've been a 9+/10.

The controls were much better than MadWorld. There was no instance where the game limited itself by overassigning tasks to the A button like MadWorld does (okay, actually, in the coconut minigame it did that, but that was a minigame).

Much like MadWorld, the basic enemies are lemmings, but they do throw change ups at the gamer during the game. You play baseball, play upside down, play sidescrolling, and are also given multiple objectives throughout the different missions. MadWorld got its variety through its challenges, and even [/i]those[/i] were reused. There is a strategy in NMH, as you can stun, preform wrestling moves, and change stances/katanas, or use your weapons alternate high/low specials. In contrast, MadWorld is a game where the environment provides the entertainment, but a huge flaw it has is that many of the environmental kills are simply reskinned. As GiantBomb pointed out, in the tutorial, you are introduced to the sign, the rosebush, and the trash can, and those items stay with you throughout the game, simply with different designs. For a game entirely based around the "art" of the kill, MadWorld can seem very limited at times. There are unique violent kills in each level of course, but a great game shouldn't require the gamer to "find their own fun" but should instead direct them. NMH is extremely linear, leading the player down some changing, but always easy, basic enemies until you reach your way to the thrilling bosses.

The boss design in NMH is much better than the boss design in MadWorld. Artistically, they're both phenomenal. But NMH brings character to the people you're fighting, albeit limited, and gives each fighter a really unique twist. By comparison, nearly all of the bosses in MadWorld can be beaten by simply dodging around until you can counter, via mindless waggle, their attack. When this isn't happening, all of the unique aspects of the game, the environmental killing, is stripped away, and what you are left with is a very nimble Jack with a basic, and not particularly exciting chainsaw attack. In MadWorld, the game is boiled down to its bare elements in the boss battles; in NMH, the game is unleashed during its boss battles.

That said, I don't subscribe to the idea of NMH's being any more "complete" than MadWorld. MadWorld's pacing was brisk, but it didn't bother with filler, unlike NMH which unwisely tacked on a half-baked overworld and some of the most revoltingly basic (although mildly amusing) side-jobs known to mankind.

They're both hugely flawed games, made by brilliantly violent minds, but when it comes to pure fun-factor, NMH towers over MadWorld, given its smarter design, and more rewarding combat.

It was do a mission, then go into the open world and earn money doing boring jobs, then another mission. Missions were just killing every enemy in the boring levels using the boring super easy combat. The bosses themselves were boring except the lack two (I'm including the secret boss). It's the type of game where people remember what was cool about the game stylistically, not so much how good the gameplay actually was. I feel the same way too though, because the game does have cool style for and it does a decent job of concealing all the problems.

I think one thing MadWorld should have had a beat em up mode where enemies really attacked and it didn't focus on messing with the environment.

Post by: Bebpo on April 11, 2009, 03:54:45 AM: The motorcycle levels in Madworld sucked. They were shallow and the controls were awful. Probably the only part of the game that felt really below what I expected from a Platinum Games title.

Driving around in the motorcycle in NMH was fun in a "lolll no physics hahaha" way. Plus it just got you where you needed to be.

:'( This shit again? I learned my lesson with Capcom games on PS2/GC. I'm not going through another gimped game just so I can have a decent challenge after I've already beaten the game.
