Title: What'cha playing (Zombie Jesus Weekend)
Post by: Rman on April 10, 2009, 03:02:52 PM
SF4 and RE5 still have me hooked.  I'll put in some more time this weekend.  Probably start on one of my backlogged RPGs since I have school off this weekend.

At work:

Etrian Odyssey II- Pretty much the exact same game as the first but with some minor tweaks. My current team is Landsknecht, Protector, War Magus, Gunner, and Survivalist. The game seems more difficult than the first one as the FOE battles are absolutely destroying me. Good fun.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup- The potato chips of work games.

Duck Tales- My retro game of the weekend. The challenge is playing the game with one life and see how much loot I can snag before I bite it.

At home:

Street Fighter IV-  My Chun-li has become a vicious she-beast now. I'm currently working on mastering Gouken. Trying to play the character without the use of fireball spamming like so many players seem to do.

Fallout 3- I recently received a distress signal and am returning to Vault 101 to see what has happened since I left.

Also I saw Dungeons and Dragons Tactics for sale really cheap at Gamestop. Has anyone here checked it out?

Some Banjo and COD4, trying to get used to using the 360 controller for COD. Also playing Assassin's Creed (again), so that I can troll it more effectively.

Oh, and :bow Red Faction Guerrilla demo :bow2

Rock Band 2
Call of Duty 4 – I just need 65 kills with the AK47 and 140 (lol) kills with the MP44 to get my golden AK.  I will do this before MW2.
Orange Box – I haven't played HL2 before, so I've decided to see what all the fuss is about.  That said, I'm in Route Kanal and it's really boring. :( Hopefully it improves.

Nothing specifically.

Still mostly running my PC games through the 1920x1200, 16xAF, 16x AA, Max Settings challenge.

If my friends come over, we'll probably play SF4 again (if one of them has it).

Are you planning on getting the PC version of SF4, SG.

Definitely.

Not only would it look awesome on my PC, I can also just my HRAP2SA on my PC instead of buying a new joystick for the 360 version.

I would have gotten the 360 version if my stick had worked.  My first impressions of SF4 were very positive.  The game looked much better than I expected.

I could also get the PS3 version so that I can use my current stick but it would annoy me very much to know that I was playing the inferior looking version.

I've been playing a lot of Mobile Suit Gundam: Bonds of the Battlefield Portable on the PSP lately. We've got my wife's parents staying with us for the weekend, and my parents and some of our friends will be over tonight, so we'll more than likely play some Rock Band 2.

I'm playing the "went back to school and now trying to get used to having assignments/stuyding again" game.  It sucks.

This week's GOTY.   Capcom basically took the Gundam Vs. Gundam engine (they developed it for Bandai) and applied it to their Sengoku Basara series.  The result is awesome and the game is fun as hell.  I love that Capcom is making different types of games with this series rather than endless re-hashes like Koei does.

After having not played this since launch, I went back to it and finally played some co-op and versus with a friend.  This got me into the versus mode; really enjoying the boss rush-style game play.  There's new DLC for this game (two new characters and a new stage!), but I am still waiting on J-XBL points ordered from NCSX.  Hopefully they get more tomorrow...

Oboro Muramasa

Not bad so far; seems to have more to the battle system than Odin Sphere, but it also still seems easy and a bit too repetitive, even for the genre.  Yes, it's insanely, jaw-droppingly, HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT GORGEOUS (perhaps the best-looking 2D game ever made?), but I'm not sure how many people would really care about this game if it weren't for its visuals.  I only played the first stage (which was just go right, go right, go right, kill enemies, go right, go right, tedious-but-easy boss fight, go left, go left go left [fight no enemies], go to the next stage), BUT things seemed to already get better with the second.

Always playing this!  Not going to stop until BlazBlue and KOF XII at the end of June, and even then I doubt I will fully stop playing.  SF4 just fucking rocks.

Quite pricey, but might be worth it since you love SNK games as well.  It's probably a better deal than when you pay $100 for that used, low end 360 stick.

Nice, but no way I'd pay $300+shipping fees for that stick.  It doesn't even have six buttons so it wouldn't work with everything.

Onechanbara may be the worst game I've played, but not because of the gameplay (mashing X is reasonably fun, and the girl with guns is cool). It's because of one type of enemy.

"Hey here's a dude you have to kill, only we wont tell you how LOL. Then master a combo on timing which you can only learn out of the main mode in practice. Whoops you're not high enough level to do a good enough combo on this guy to kill him LOL. Go back and level up more. Oh and it gets harder if you dont clean your sword, which you must do after every hit on this guy. "

I haven't been this mad at a game in ages. I'm sure they know it's only for sad animu people so they've made it as sadistically hard as possible.

I played the worst match up ever yesterday in SF4.  My friend was Rose and I was El Fuerte.  Rose seems to be the ANTI-EL FUERTE.  Her normal sweep and standing kick beats his sweep and standing kick.  Her towel punch dash beats his slide/rush.  Her dragon punch grab catches him if he tries his super or jumping attacks from his run attack or his rising kick grab...etc.  I really had NO IDEA what to do to attack with him against her.  Nothing was safe and even when I got hits it felt like he did very little damage.  Was >_____< but fun!

poking along in brave fencer musashi.  i should've just stayed away from the game and kept my fond memories, but instead i'm trudging through an early 3d platformer with awful collision detection and crap controls.  there's even a lot of backtracking at the beginning of the game!  the game's still got its charm, but man it feels so old.

i also picked up crackdown and tomb raider anniversary yesterday and i started up tr.  seems okay so far, but everything feels like been there done that and lara is way slower and clumsier than the prince or altair.  i'm not enjoying it that much.  are the the other more recent games in the series any better?

I just finished CoR: Escape From Butcher Bay.  It was great but a little overhyped.  The stealth sections had way too much trial & error.  I'm going to start Dark Athena now I guess.  People say it isn't as good but hopefully that's just nostalgia for the first game.

on a real j-rpg tip this weekend, been playing:

Persona 3 - fuckin boss yo
Yggdra Union PSP - fuckin boss yo

and finally bothered to finish hacking my PSP. Been getting into Vagrant Story. Its also fuckin boss. Put about 40-50 hours into it back in '99, not sure If I'll do it again though  :P

And still playing RE5. Just gotta get one more S-rank (5-3, pain in the ass) and then take on Pro mode. Played some more Dishwaher Samurai. The combat is really solid but I cant seem to play more than a couple of stages before I want to play something else. oh well good to have a game thats fun in bursts, unlike fucking Peggle

Played a couple hours of PGR4.

I played the hell out of the first two but I really suck at this game.  I can't drift worth a shit (unless it is coincidental) where I remember drifting constantly in the first two.  Also the courses are extremely narrow for some reason (hoping that changes) but the game is gorgeous.  I'll keep playing.

Just hold R, let go for a half second and lightly push in L while turning, then let go of L and get back on R again.  The drifting is really arcadey so it's pretty loose and easy.

Well the game has some really nice voice-acting and motion-captured animation and in a pretty serious part where you're talking to the different prisoners in their cells, you come across a guy masturbating.  He talks some funny shit to you and then has a motion-captured orgasm.

Taking a break from SO4 I guess.  I got to disc 3 on Thursday or something and I haven't felt like putting the disc in since.  Not that I totally hate it or anything, I want to finish it up and move to another console game...it's just I haven't felt ready to give 4-5 hour sessions which is about the only way things get done in SO4.

So I've just been playing World Destruction and I got to the point all the importers told me about where the game mechanics essential STOP WORKING and it's the most broken rpg ever made.  You get the ability to do 40 hit combos for insane damage when on the ground, but not for the air or your magic or anything.  In short what this means is I fought a boss that seemed impossible.  It was like a 10-20min boss fight and ridiculously difficult to the point of being cheap and unbeatable without tons of grinding.  Then I got the game-breaker ability and fought the same boss and killed him in 2 turns with just my main character.  Both turns his single attack string did 60% of the boss's HP, whereas through normal attacking 1 turn would do like 5%.  So yeah, game is totally broken now but kinda fun.  Dungeon design is terrible though, super mazey.  Supposedly the US version is getting changes.

Probably not unless you get some weird enjoyment from playing games that you know are bad.  I'm pretty sure Prole gave it a 5/10 when I asked him.

I also heard on a podcast that the game is really unpolished and probably not worth the time unless you absolutely love Diablo clones.

I have two acts left on RE5. I think I'm going to plow through them quick later tonight, do a little Mercs, and then take it back to Blockbuster tomorrow. I got a free month of Gamepass so I want to get the most out of it. Think I might get either Fiddy or Riddick next.

I just finished the new Chronicles of Riddick game and I think that Dark Athena is actually the better campaign but both of them are very good.  The Dark Athena campaign just has better story-telling, no trial & error choke points, and they also toned down the amount of fetch quests which got really annoying in EFBB.  I also LOVED the Ulaks and SCAR gun.  In general, you spend more time feeling like an invisible killing machine in Dark Athena.

It was about 25 hours to finish both campaigns.  The voice-acting is probably the best that I can remember on the current consoles.

sacred 2 is actually pretty damn polished, and the 2.4 patch adds the new 360/ps3 ui as well as some nice performance cleanup all around. it's certainly far less busted/broken than the original sacred, in terms of bugs and technical issues. (the 2.4 patch also added in achievements.)

the problem is that class balance is utterly broken -- playing a "mystic stormite" (lol wat) spec high elf is an easy button in all modes, sp and mp. glacial thorns three shots bosses after nerf, instead of simply one-shotting them. on the other hand, playing a "cabalistic voodoo" (lol x2) spec dryad means one helluva brutal slog. there's also some nasty terrain mazes which are a complete bear to navigate, especially in the seraphim isles/dragon caves areas.

i've almost beaten it as a high elf and it's been really bipolar. I had a lot of fun in the last third, which is really pretty and largely linear, but the middle is an endless slog through maze-like caves and the most boring desert region since breath of fire 3.

ultimately, i give it like a 7 out of 10. it is better than killzone 2 and street fighter 4, of course.

There were no copies of Fiddy so I got Riddick. It's not really blowing my mind.

Started up Gears of War 2 again, it's better than I remember it being, and the levels after the worm have been pretty incredible looking. I think I'm playing it on the wrong difficulty though. Also getting a bit tired of the action movie moments, feels a bit MGS-y at times.

Still in EQII. Was exploring Greater Faydark today and was whacked over the head with nostalgia when I ran into this:

I've mainly been XBLA-ing.  I like XBLA games because they require less effort than real games and I don't have to get up and change discs.

I think I've hit my skills limit in Pacman CE.  I can't get below 2 mins on Extra 5 min mode.  I get to the set where there are NO LOVELY GHOST-EATING BIG DOTS and I get totally killed by the fast ghosts by that point.  Not sure how much longer I'll keep playing this game.  Love it, but might be about done with it.

I'm a lvl.21 mage in Puzzle Quest now that I've picked it back up again.  Been playing on hard mode for the +25% exp bonus to try to level as fast as possible but it still takes forever to gain levels.  Might keep playing until I finish the story mode, might bail at any time.  Depends on how cheap the bosses/enemies are.  I finally got really good with my red mage and I'm destroying the hell out of everything which is why I moved to hard in the first place (besides the exp bonus).  No castle can withstand my siege, no monster can match me, I'm just taking out things left and right.  One thing I HATE about this game is the random encounters on the map that you have to get through when traveling.  Especially if they are easy, it's just a waste of 5-10 mins.  I wish I could just run past them for the cost of some gold or something.

Outrun is great.  Almost finished seeing all the locations, getting to all the ends.  Then I'll try the different modes.  Would play some online matches, but none of my local friends have the game so unless there is an EB match or something I'll skip online.  I don't enjoy gaming against strangers.

Then just playing World Destruction for my main rpg atm.  I got to the Masato Kato plot twist that's in every rpg he writes (Chrono Cross's body change with catman, Baten Kaitos's zomg you are the villian all along, etc...) so I'm guessing I'm about 60% through the game.  Game has a lot of problems, but the 2d is real pretty and considering the DS is not that strong in non-port/remake rpgs, it's a solid original rpg title for the system.

I'm also playing a little bit of Strongbad ep4 on the pc here and there when I have my home theater pc going and I'm watching movies/anime.  It's good but I'm a little burnt out on adventure gaming after going through like a dozen point n' click games last month.  I've got plenty of time before Wallace & Gromit ep2 comes out though, so I'll probably finish Strongbad 4/5 & Wallace 1 before then.

Fuck, World Destruction is totally broken again and went from killing everything 1 hit to impossibly hard and I have to run from battles because of a stupid thing that happened storywise.  My party is going to suck for a bit and this is going to take some patience >_<  I'll be really curious to how fixed the balance changes are to the US version.  With the right changes (plus more music tracks) this could be a real good game.

Finished Gears 2, pretty hot game, although the constant interruptions and many scripted and "on rails" scenes made it feel a bit disjointed. Also not sure what to make of the story. There's more of it, but there weren't a whole lot of answers to the new questions.
