BBC 1 Xtra has some amazing stuff on it.  But when I turn it on i only manage to catch Mainstream Rap Block #2526431

my own personal preference is for 87-90 east coast with a smattering of 74-80.  A lot of stuff like 84 - 86 didn't really click for me though there are def some classics from that time period.

Might have to agree with you there, although 91-94 was also amazing. 90s saw producers move away from James Brown and start experimenting more; some of hip hops best producers weren't even at their peak yet at that point, like Premier, Pete Rock, Large Pro, Havoc, K-Def, Clark Kent, etc.

actually there's a lot to love through the entire 80s and there's stuff to love in the 90s, but my own personal preferences are against the west coast stuff that started gaining ground in the late 80s early 90s, though there are some absolute classics of the style in that era.  I absolutely cannot front on Straight Outta Compton or Ice Cube's Solo Output (quelle surprise seeing who wrote SOC).

yes, that's the aspect.  this whole new section of society opened up their wallets to hip hop and then all of a sudden that's seemingly all there was.

Actually, you can break it down further:

Sonic Youth toured with Neil Young, helping Neil Young make the SY-inspired Arc album.

Later on, Pearl Jam recorded that album with Neil Young that I forget the name of.

And then Sonic Youth opened for PJ (that was late-ish 90s-- 98 maybe)

Early 90s gangsta rap was quite different from the stuff that followed imo. Not only could many of the acts rap, their lyrical content went beyond boasting and bragging. When I listened to The Infamous I thought "wow, why would anyone want to be a gangster?" That album is so dark and grim; sure they bragged about their guns and prowess, but at the same time that album pulses with genuine regret and fear. That album wasn't a huge hit, neither was 36 Chambers (not that I'm saying it's a "gangsta" album). IIRC the first blockbuster 90s east coast gangsta hit was Ready to Die, and that's when things started getting overly flashy and extravagant. But while Ready to Die is definitely a commercial album it's also a very dark album where drug dealers aren't the all powerful supermen they're made out to be by today's rap.

weird, since a trible called quest, de la soul, eric b. & rakim, the pharcyde, beastie boys, souls of mischief, gang starr, the roots, gza, kool keith, company flow, dj shadow krush and such dictated the early to mid 90s for me.

not to say i didn't listen to nas, gravediggaz, black moon, wutang, dre and such but still, i'm at a total lost at the fuck you whities are talking about. if anything, hiphop has just only recently died :(
