I'd argue that the initial "gangsta" wave of the early 90s was one of the strongest periods of hip hop. The 1995 sample of this mix is insane

I don't think it so much "killed hip-hop" but it basically made it so that gangsta shit was the only form of hip-hop that would sell (to middle-class wiggers from the suburbs).
I think the parallel is how there is a straight line from Sonic Youth to Creed, and how the early 90's sucked at trend making.
