Title: John Madden retires
Post by: Rman on April 16, 2009, 06:31:29 PM
Quote
John Madden retired from calling professional football on Wednesday, leaving a craft that he revolutionized for 30 years with a coach's eye, a collection of comic book sound effects and a refined taste for Thanksgiving turducken.

I don't want to sound blamesphimous, but not my favorite color commentator.  Joe Theismann FTW.  Great guy, nonetheless, and I wish him luck in retirement.

I thought the dude was dead. I mean, he's like 100 years old right?

That's right America, we have no idea who or what is important in your   little sport "world".

I'm a little disappointed, I was hoping he'd keep going until he was senile.  Because with him, I figured it would be fun to try and figure out when he's lucid and when he aint.  Hell, he could be already for all I know.

His style wore down in recent years but that doesn't take away from the fact that he was a great commentator. I learned a lot about the game by simply tuning in to his broadcasts when I was younger.

As much as his shtick wore on me the past few years, I can't deny that he will be missed. I'm pretty sure I bought at least 15 Madden games over the years. The man is a legend. Frank Calliendo's interview on SC today was pretty funny IMO.

I guess he just couldn't handle life without Brett Fav-ruh.  If only Peter King and Greggggggg Easterbrook would follow Madden's graceful lead here...

Oh, and Kornheiser too.  But I would honestly rather a meteor kill Kornheiser- he's too obnoxious just to keep living.

Colinworth's is also solid.

Collinsworth is replacing him, that's great news.

And holy shit at Theissman > Madden talk.  I'm just going to pretend I didn't read that.

At least Madden sucked off a great QB.  Theissman sucked off Michael Vick.  MICHAEL VICK.

It was about time.

So, what's the EA Sports football line going to be called now?

Why the hell would they stop calling it Madden?

As good as Collinsworth will be, no one is lining up to buy Collinsworth '10.

It will be Madden at least until he dies.  If EA changes the brand and loses exclusive NFL license a lot of their mindshare will go and they'd have to make the better game to continue winning.

Or they can just bring back Road Rash.  :-*

Fuck that, they should just bring back Mutant League.

You got that right.  16 bit systems weren't advanced enough to handle Mutant League, the football was slow and studdery, although the hockey game was pretty playable.  I'd KILL to have half the sports franchises we used to have, fantasy sports still have an audience and now that they can be done properly all we get is Madden and two basketball sims.

What happened to Mutant League, Blitzball, Arch Rivals and games of that ilk?  Sports games take themselves WAY too seriously, I guess we still have Blitz the League but I'd LOVE a return of Mutant League.

EA stated that they won't change the name of the game from "Madden". If they did, they might as well declare bankruptcy now and get it over with. Isn't it their biggest year over year seller?

He wasn't the same the last few years, but I will miss him. Collinsworth is an excellent choice.
