I LOVE the first Sly Cooper game. I can't think of a better way to describe it than Crash Bandicoot 4 with the most unobtrusive stealth gameplay in video games.
I'm not a fan of the other two games, though. It's clear that Sucker Punch caught the GTA fever that was going around at the time, and Sly 2 & 3 are bascially GTA: Platforming Edition. Not only that, but they made stealth a much more important part of the game. Just ugh.
I'm kind of excited for a Sly Cooper 4, but I know that it will just be another GTA clone...
What are your thoughts about the Sly Cooper series?

The first one was a revelation, the first cartoony game I'd played that actually felt of the quality to be measured directly against those cartoons. Great characters, great script, awesome gameplay. I liked the second one well enough, as it featured an even better heist, equally awesome characters and better gameplay than ever. However, for as much as I like the other characters in the gang, I wasn't fond of playing as them.

Played the 2nd or the 3rd one, don't remember quite, didn't like it at all. But they looked good.
-
I plan to replay the first game after the bulk of my finals are done, so I'll come back to you on that. I really liked the first game.

Played the first game, absolutely adored it. Just an amazing pure platformer with some surprisingly fun and well implemented stealth elements and little focus on combat. Probably one of my favorite PS2 games, even if it was really easy and super short. I then played the second one for a few chapters, was turned off by the lack of emphasis on platforming and the new focus on switching characters and even more stealth.
-
Never played the first but I really liked the second one. I have the third to play someday too.
-
I tried playing the first one when it dropped to greatest hits. Found the platforming way too easy and boring because of that. Didn't get very far, maybe 2-3 hours in and then shelved it.
-
The first one was awesome. I didn't really care for the GTA-ization of 2 & 3, although there was some decent gameplay to be had in them and I actually liked the characters and the plot.

The first Sly Cooper is one of my favorite PS2 games. I've held off on playing the other ones due to the negative response they generally get

same here, don't want to ruin it. who wanted to play as his friends anyway?

It's not that bad, and it's worth it for the plot and new characters. I think it's just a victim of gamers being whiny drama queens.
-
I thought 2 was at least almost as good as 1. I remember being very happy with it. I never got into 3.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. I really love Sly 2 and 3, the whole series are some of my favorite PS2 games.

The first one is an amazing game but it's a downward spiral from there. Sly 2 and 3 implement Sly and his shitty friends, which ain't half bad in Sly 2 but unbearable in Sly 3. Sly 2 is still pretty good, just don't play 3.
-
Played another chapter in Sly 2 today. My initial impressions remain - shitty friends (gameplay-wise, as characters I think they're great - the one strength of this game over the first), lots of shitty stealth, not enough fun platforming. Not terrible, but not Sly 1 amazing.
If it's even worse in Sly 3, I have absolutely no interest in even trying that.

I thought I was the only one that liked the characters and the plot in the Sly Cooper games. You're my hero, duckman. :-*

I never played the game beyond the demo. Just remember Adam Sessler going absolutely bonkers over it on TechTV.
-
I would kill for a Sly Cooper on PSP

I only played the second one but I loved it. I like stealth stuff so that didn't turn me off.
