Title: End of an Era: Central Park Media to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy

The Crain's New York Business news source reports that the anime and manga distributor Central Park Media (CPM) filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and has closed its doors as of Monday. According to Crain's, the company owes US$1.2 million to creditors. The company has not been active in releasing new titles in the past 12 months.

CPM and its Software Sculptors, U.S. Manga Corps, and Anime 18 labels were once the North American homes of such prominent works as Grave of the Fireflies, Utena, Mobile Police Patlabor, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Project A-Ko, Dominion Tank Police, Descendants of Darkness, Demon City Shinjuku, Urotsukidoji, and La Blue Girl. It later branched out into the book publishing field by releasing Comic Party, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, Embracing Love, Kizuna, and other titles under the CPM Manga and Be Beautiful Manga imprints. It sponsored the Big Apple Anime Fest earlier this decade.

Companies that file for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code in the United States will face liquidation — unlike Chapter 11 and 13 bankruptcies which still allow companies to restructure and continue to operate.

Now who will I got to for my clunky, early 90's CG MD Geist corporate logos?  :'(

Geneon went last year, CPM went this year, and ADV can barely release one or two new series every few months. On the other hand, Funimation is releasing a new series practically every week and has already run through most of Geneon's old library. There's a definite shift in how the market operates, and we'll probably see more contraction over the next year or two, but Bandai and Funimation will probably weather the storm okay.

 :lol Oh, TVC, never change.

Soon enough we'll have Bandai and Funimation as the big two, along with Viz releasing a small number of sizable titles.

"This is just an aside, but I was recently made to watch this "Japanimation" movie, Legend of the Demon Womb, that also inspired me in a related way. In the movie, there is this device, the Nazi Death Rape Machine, that could certainly be used as a punishment for women who abort children and especially heinous feminists. The machine looks not unlike a spider, and on each of its legs women are attached and molested. If we were to take the murderers that abort children and the severely God-less feminists and knock them over the head until they are sent into a vegetative state much like Terri Schiavo, we could then hook them up to such a machine. But this machine, unlike the one in Legend of the Demon Womb, would not be a monstrous rape machine, but would gently impregnate the sinners. I know most of you will be outraged at the idea, but you -- at least those of you that think it is okay to kill the vegetative -- are hypocrites; for why is it okay to kill brain dead, but not okay to turn their bodies into vessels for life? And that's the beauty of these ideas. We will be creating a culture of life, a culture so powerful that even women who in life turned their backs to God are brought under His wing. Perhaps this all sounds like science fiction, but even Christians have fantasies sometimes..."

And on this day my decade-long crisis of faith was healed.

I never sat through this hentai, is it any good?

I wonder if anyone's going to pick up the distribution rights to CPM's old stuff...

I download all my anime, it feels kind of good to know that I contributed to the death of a company and the lost of many jobs, it feels like I actually have an impact in the world.

I've got CPM's releases of Votoms (TV), Patlabor (TV and OVAs), Grave of the Fireflies, and Harlock Saga. They didn't put out much, but I like what they did.

Funimation will probably pick up a few of their more popular releases, but I bet that most of their stuff just fades away.

They were pretty big back in the late 80's and 90's, but they really haven't done much in the past decade.
