Title: Getting a new notebook/laptop...should I go pc or mac?
Post by: Himu on April 30, 2009, 11:29:20 PM
I'm in the market for a new laptop, one that doesn't have to be the most powerful little bugger on the block but one that can at the very least run current pc games and be a heck of a beast when it comes to running computer animation apps.

I'm considering getting a macbook, but I'm not sure I can justify the price, but it seems worth it. I just have to compare the specs to windows ready laptops with similar specs.

The 2.0 GHZ definitely seems my thing.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook

I used to be against mac, but now that you can run windows on mac, and considering my major (graphics/animation) I'm definitely shooting for a mac. But then, macs seem relatively more expensive than the average powerful pc notebook.

anyone in grpahics/animation would likely either drop out or kill themselves before they reached their desired career so you should just pick a pc now anyway

I'm a super mac cigarillo and I would recommend a PC.  For 3D animation work most of the software runs best on windows.  The native mac apps for 3d animation pale in comparison to their Windows versions.

I didn't either, but I learned how to use my macbook in a couple hours.  5 hour battery life even with wi-fi on (for the entry aluminum macbook on a medium brightness setting which is more than enough), thin as hell, portable, won't overheat, barely makes a sound, fast, doesn't freeze or require constant updating/babysitting with spyware and virus scans.

run and don't look back.

that's such a red herring argument.  okay, yes, you can get a windows pc with 10gb of ram, quad core mobile processor, and an nVidia 99999SUPERFXMOUNTAINDEWGAMEFUELGAMERZFXDOODS edition chip in it, but that fucker will melt your dick off if it's on your lap, after it crushes both of your femurs, and the battery will die 5 minutes after that, before you can message your friend to call the police.   Hardware isn't an issue with macs, they run efficiently on the hardware they have...

yes and nothing has ever gone wrong with a windows-based laptop.  ever.

that's why asus is so cheap--high quality parts that aren't assembled by mexican slaves in china.

My MacBook Pro had to go in for repairs 4 times!  None of those times was for the same thing.  Apple typically seems to spend their money on a few big name components and then buys garbage (proprietary if possible, for the rest.  At least that's the case in my MBP and Mac Pro.

Macs are great if you like the OS or exclusive software.  The quality of their hardware isn't a selling point, though.  They are at best no worse than anyone else, and they have a tendency to make questionable component decisions.

They subsidize the cost of the awesome hardware inside by letting special education schools buy placement for student art on the back of their laptops.

I just like Macs because I like using OS X. I'm a pretty casual user: music, chatting, internet, photos. I love using OS X for all of those. Bam. I game on consoles, so games really aren't an issue.

But I've lost this argument because of the Windows 7 and low-cost love.

Mine has the lightning on the back, but I did vomit a bit on it, as well.

oh i see, it was on the borecast...yes, well, just wait until tomorrow when I get the members of my podcast to come in with a circle jerk of anecdotal evidence and funny comics about PC batteries exploding.  then it's really on, yo.

why are you getting so bent out of shape

and i jerk alone btw fyi

bent out of shape would be posting pictures of actual circle jerks...but I did think something was weird 'cause I didn't realize that you guys had a purpose here, that you were congratulating each other on your fine purchases.  which is fine, though it's more than a little sad with the whole "look at this set of blog posts about macs" b.s. which you can do for any number of laptops as well...

yeah, but at least they're sexy and hip.  your ASUS PCs are totally uncultured and generic.  they seem like they'd be owned by guys who spend more time defending them than playing awesome hits such as Sacred 2 on them.

hmmm, but what if I drop it to 2x AF, slide the LOD and grass density down a little more (don't notice those as much anyway), but bump up the shadows all the way and AA to 8xQ?  THEN it'll look even better!

I used to be against mac, but now that you can run windows on mac, and considering my major (graphics/animation) I'm definitely shooting for a mac. But then, macs seem relatively more expensive than the average powerful pc notebook.

Forget all the nonsense in this thread.  Do you use Macs or PCs in your classes?  Get whichever one you use the most.  And do you NEED a laptop?  If you don't need one for the graphics stuff especially, just buy a cheap netbook and get yourself a good desktop.  Hell you can get a new Mac Mini starting at like $599.

I recently went back to school and am studying IT.  I'm also a Mac user at home, which doesn't help much when everything I'm doing currently involves using Windows.  Boot Camp works great for the most part, but there are some keys "missing," which means that I sometimes have to do these weird keyboard combinations just to do something easy like "printscreen."  This is mildly annoying (you can, of course, plug in a Windows keyboard and have all the functionality; I'm talking about the laptop keyboard)

For my next computer, I'm going back to PC.  Will likely be building my own desktop for the first time; seems like it would be fun and a good way to get more familiar with the guts of a PC.
