Title: Good Games for Depression.
Post by: lordmaji on May 04, 2009, 12:24:16 PM
Alright, considering my situation and how I don't know anyone around here. List some games that I could lose myself into. I know 1 that some people I know use to help there depression... WoW!!! :lol I've considered it.

But a list of good games to get lost in would be nice. I have a 360 and of course my PC. So... yeah.

RPGs are good for this... really easy to lose yourself in them. Not to mention they're usually chock full of cheesy self-help booklet lines (especially something like Wild Arms 3). I'd recommend something more upbeat (like Blue Dragon) though, a game like Lost Odyssey might be too depressing.

You need to immerse yourself in a game in order to forget. So yes an MMO like WOW would do the trick, or if you like sports, try a Pro Evo online or Madden, don't know how good that one is, but you'll spend hours playing against other people in Pro Evo.

Aside from those type of competitive games, you need games with a strong sense of universe, like movies, that's what does the trick for me. Love to immerse myself in a game like The Witcher, NeverWinter Nights 2 (and Mask of the Betrayer), Knights of the Old Republic, etc

Because they are long games that create an attachment between you and the characters and the world, and you just forget. But Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect...

Those are all games that do a good job of drawing you in their world. Personally? You should just download all seasons of Entourage and Battlestar Galactica and call it a day.

Some games which will you let chat with friends.  Gaming is not a good idea right now unless you're playing them with friends.

The more depressed you are, the more likely you would want to be alone.  Social activities is a good way of getting out of depression.

oh shit.  I'm sorry, I hardly ever do this, but I skipped the OP and assumed it meant Economic depression.

Uh, I'd say go for some cutsey but still quality games.  Nice cheery stuff like Katamari or Monkey Island or sumptin.

Nothing artsy, or emo, or with a family oriented story.  You want something either really intense and violent or really fantastical, that won't remind you of your situation.

MMO's (WoW being top listing)  are very good for escapism.  Play through Planescape:Torment or Diablo2 or something.  Portal.  Left4dead.  Tackle some MGS, that's always good for sucking hours and hours out of your life as you use all your brainpower to try and figure out the story/how to shoot without crouching and standing four times first.

Personally, games help but it can unnecessarily prolong the depression as it can lead to chronic escapism.  I'd say don't go for immersion, stick with pick up and play gaming so you don't lose motivation to take active control of your problem,

The morning that Outrun came out for XBLA, my mother woke up not able to breathe well and my father and sister went to the hospital with her in an ambulance. This was at like 3-4 am. I was worried as fuck, but I had to stay home with my 1 year old niece. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I bought (even though I was pretty broke) Outrun and blue skies and cheesy arcade music cleared my head. I played it with my niece asleep in my lap for like 2-3 hours straight until they got back home and told me that she was fine.

So yeah, buy Outrun Online.

I hate to buck the system here, but I would only game when your kids are sleeping at your place. Other than that, I would be out at the bars/social places making connections. Silly as it may sound. You are a handsome guy, don't waste it in front of a TV.

I wouldn't try to get enveloped by WoW or some shit.  Play whatever it is you want to play that makes you happy, but go out to bars and get hammered too, while finding some ears to listen to ya/pity sex.  There's no magic game...though, yeah, CivIV will eat whole days for breakfast.  when I got it, I bought it at like 10am popped it in for a tutorial and played until like 8pm that night.  haven't played since :lol
