Apparently David Duke was busy, so Jeff Sessions will get the job as the ranking member on the Judiciary committee. (http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/05/senator-who-praised-segregationist-judges-will-lead-opposition-to-obama-nominees.php)
Some Jeff Sessions highlights from the tpm article:
-in 1981 during a murder investigation involving the KKK, Sessions was overheard saying "used to think they [the Klan] were OK" until he found out some of them were "pot smokers."
-claimed that the NAACP and ACLU "forced civil rights down the throat of the people"
-called a white civil rights lawyer a "disgrace to his race" for litigating voting rights cases
-failed to be appointed to a seat on the US District Court in Alabama for these and other reasons in 1986, despite Republicans controlling the Senate and committee. Now he gets to be the ranking member! Oh the ironing!
-my personal favorite: claimed he wasn't a racist as he had shared a hotel room with a black attorney several times.
Never change, Republicans. Never change.

quelle surprise
is he at least publicly ashamed like Strom was?
-
The first bullet point does sound like an obvious joke, like "By the way I thought Hitler was a swell fellow until I learned he was a vegetarian!" On the other hand, he's a Southern Republican and I'm sleep deprived.

pot smoking is much worse than vegetarianism
although they do go hand in hand

No, you see during his confirmation hearings in 1986 he let everybody in on the secret- he had been joking every time he said something crazy like that! That time he called a black lawyer "boy"? Joking. When he told the same black lawyer to "be careful what you say to white folks"? A joke! All those separate instances of him calling the NAACP, ACLU, Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the National Council of Churches "un-American"? What a kneeslapper that was!
He did, however, stand behind calling the Voting Rights Act of 1965 a "piece of intrusive legislation".

My gut reaction is that he was kidding on the square.

I do that a lot when I use self-deprecating humor* irl. Or at least I did when I still left my apartment occasionally.

Where does that asterisk direct me!? That's going to slowly drive me insane.
