Title: Cogs: AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Post by: Bebpo on May 09, 2009, 09:05:13 PM

So I bought Cogs because the guy on indiegames.com talked about how he's been loving it, because it has steam achievements and because the concept of a 3d incredible machine type game where you rotate around to make a 3-dimensional working machine sounded neat.

Then I started the first puzzle and I realized THIS IS A SLIDING BLOCK GAME AHHHHHHHHHHH.  Sliding block puzzles, whether they are in Layton or Silent Hill 5 or any game are like THE WORST PUZZLES EVER MADE.  So now imagine an entire game of NOTHING BUT THEM and then they're even harder than normal because of the added 3rd dimension.  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

;_;

even worse is I love sliding block puzzles and I got like five puzzles in before I had to quit in disgust. the game is just not fun for anyone

hopefully you learned a lesson about trying demos first!

The timing thing was pretty bogus, yeah.

I can deal with any sliding block puzzle as long as it's just "moves blocks from points A to points B"

once it introduced a timing element where blocks changed their status when you moved them and they needed to be synchronized ... no, fuck YOU

Sliding block puzzles are fine in small doses but a whole game of that shit?

Holy crap.  :-X

To its credit, the polish is very nice.  Great visuals, menus, music and even achievements.

I was on Bebpo's path about a week ago until I watched the trailer.  Now I'm very glad that money went towards Ceville instead.

See I have many problems that lead me to certain doom:

A.  I don't watch trailers usually
B.  I don't even look closely at screenshots usually, I just glance at them as I scroll down
C.  I don't play demos because I have enough full games to play I feel like I have no time for demos
D.  I listen to everyone's recommendations and anyone liking anything in any genre gets me interested in playing it
E.  I am a bad bad bad impulse purchaser, especially for anything $10 or under
;_;

One day I'll give Ceville & Goblins 4 a shot.  Both are fairly reasonably priced now at $20 and got solid reviews from people who play adventure games.  But I have a boatload of adventure games to get through right now, so I'll wait a while.

Does "sliding block" mean "like the vending machine unlock game from Bioshock"?

I played more of this.  I really like the music, menus, and visual design.  Sometimes the levels are really neat in how they are setup and bring new ideas never seen before in sliding block puzzles.  But then some puzzles don't make any sense like one where you had to speed up a clock to match the speed of another clock ??? I beat that by accident.

Yep.
