Title: shaving product recommendations
Post by: Flannel Boy on May 10, 2009, 11:54:58 AM: I've been shaving my face for the past two weeks with a Philips Philishave. It isn't good: it irritates my skin and leaves thick Homer Simpsonesq stubble. Now--the shaver is about ten years old, but it's not like it's been used much.

So what do you guys use? What would you recommend?

My skin is super sensitive, and this does an ok job most of the time, as long as I use the moisturiser.
I tried all kinds of razors and shavers, this caused the least irritated skin.

If you're worried about the stubble, you might want to go with old school blades.

Post by: Saint Cornelius on May 10, 2009, 12:01:10 PM: I'm on some serious metrosexual shit nowadays - pre-shave scrub with some Neutrogena for Men shit (mad cheap in the J&J store), then - AND THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART - get a wash rag as hot as you can motherfucking stand it (I dip that shit in boiling water) and hold it to your face for a few minutes. It'll make your hairs stand straight up and make shaving a breeze.

Of course, go with the grain and all that shit, etc. etc.

And pop a valium or two, I guess?

That's the exact one I bought the other day. Earlier today I used it when I actually had a bit of a beard and it worked really well. It's not a very close shave like my old razor is, but it takes about a tenth of the time to shave and is good enough. It's a bit like how my beard is at the end of the day if I shaved in the morning, which is pretty good considering I will shave more frequently now, so it's an improvement in the end.

Only problem is that I still have problems with my shaving my neck with it. Again, it's still better than using a manual razor.

This shit is hot, I think I'll get one myself. I have some other electric shaver from a few years ago that feels like it's pulling my hair out when I haven't shaved for a couple of days, and it irritates the hell out of my neck.

yeah, the moisturizer is nice. It's cool that I not only eliminated the time it takes to shave but also the shaving prep.

I have stubble either way so I prefer to keep my face baby smooth with an electric. It gets close enough and doesn't age my face unecessarily.

I switched from cartridge blades to a double edge razor over a year ago and I think that I have been much better off for it. The blades are very cheap and the shave overall is closer and more comfortable

Pretty much. This is what I use for shaving my dome, and I've yet to find anything else remotely as effective. Electric razors just never shaved close enough for my liking (I'm talking about my face now).

I've used a Philips electric for years now and it works well enough. It also irritates my skin less, although I still have to put on some moisturising cream after.

part of why I switched was just economics too. I think every time I've gone to the store to buy razors in the past year, I've stood there cringing at the price of Turbo razors and thinking about picking up the Sensor, since a 10 pack of Sensor Excels is a few bucks less than a 5 pack of Turbos...

edit: whoops, sensor excel has 3 razors :teehee weird

I hold a very cold washcloth over my face for a minute, then put a bit of Kiehl's face lotion on. Have not had much skin irritation, razor burn, or in-grown hairs since I started using lotion instead of an aftershave.

I really liked Nivea after shave balm for sensitive skin. I switched to a premium after shave and while it smells nicer, it doesn't hydrate my skin nearly as well.

It doesn't even matter what you use .. I have used hand soap, shampoo, baby lotion .. it all helps save you skin from the razor.

You should give the Fusion a whirl, if you're inclined. I know Patel didn't like it, but for me nothing else I've tried so far compares. The gf has even stolen my original to use on her legs after she forgot her razor one weekend, and was so impressed with it.
