Title: Budget Priced DSL - how bad is 768 Kbps?
Post by: border on May 11, 2009, 04:20:10 PM
I'm currently looking to cut back expenses.  Right now AT&T is offering their el cheapo lowend DSL service for $10/month, provided you sign on for a one year contract (offer is for new customers only though).  There's actually a $125 Cash Back Offer for people switching from cable, so it's basically a year of free internet plus a free $5....As compared to the $60/month -- $720/year rate I'm getting at Comcast.  Very tempting but I'd be taking a pretty massive cut in speed (currently on a 6Mbps cable line).

I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with this service or ones with a similar speed.  How excruciating will it be?  I'm not looking to do any HD Netflix streaming, but I do visit sites like Hulu/Youtube and occasionally grab shows I like off of newsgroups.  Is surfing the web really that much slower, assuming you don't visit very image-heavy sites?

It's about 100 kilobytes a second.

768 kbps is the Internet equivalent of the Wii.

Effectively, you're going to be getting better than a 56k modem and less than 128k ISDN.

unless you are an avid downloader or online gamer then stick with what you got... but if you just browse the web and jerk off to porn then go for it.

This is basically the line Comcast uses to explain to the layman.

recently i dropped my digital cable down to the cheapest 12-channel plan they had (i would have dropped it altogether, but over-the-air reception here blows), and got rid of cable phone service in favor of a $3 a month skype plan

i kept high-speed internet, though, because i can get just about whatever i'd want to watch or play through that (and i'm not even talking about piracy)

my cable/phone/internet bill has gone from $215 a month to $68

so, if i were you, i'd cut everything else before i cut high-speed internet

It's probably close to the average speed in Australia.

I'm anxiously waiting for Naked ADSL2+ coverage so I can fuck off Telstra's line rental.  1500kbps until then. :'(
