Title: Sacred 2 Consolez Edition
Post by: bork on May 12, 2009, 03:15:06 AM
Anyone picking this up?

Interested, but some of the reviews don't make it sound like too hot of a port.

It wasn't too hot of a game.

It's so very janky and european ghetto that I have no idea why anyone thought a console port would be wise.

Yeah it's definitely out.  I am waiting to see what more people think of it first.  TVC and Pilonv's responses already have me kinda skeptical.  But doesn't Prof. Prole really like it?

Wuh-oh the GAF thread has some postive impressions (from other forums) copy-pasted, and the 360 version is region-free.  Urge to head down to the mall and dump Killzone 2 rising...

Yup.  PC devs need more funding from console gamers so that they can continue to make superior PC games.

Bought.  Can't say I'm gonna miss Killzone 2.

Shit's giving me a dirty disc error when I try to install.  Never had this problem before.  Trying again...
Title: Re: Sacred 2 Consolez Edition
Post by: bork on May 12, 2009, 06:49:55 PM
This is bizarre.  The game runs fine off the disc, but keeps giving me a "dirty disc error, please clean with damp cloth" error when trying to install.

EDIT: Turning the system on and off let me do an install.  Hope this doesn't mean 360 #4 is about to go.   :lol

I had that happen one time with a copy of Fifa 09. It worked when I tried to install for like the fifth time, though.
Title: Re: Sacred 2 Consolez Edition
Post by: bork on May 12, 2009, 07:18:08 PM
Wow, is this game ever UGLY and the frame rate is kinda shoddy, but it seems pretty fun and a decent enough good Diablo-clone for the console.  The pickings are pretty slim in this category as is.

You can get attacked when accessing the options, including DURING SAVES.  Is the PC version like this?  It's as if the developers wanted to make a game with a more annoying options/inventory selection than Resident Evil 5.

I had that happen one time with a copy of Fifa 09. It worked when I tried to install for like the fifth time, though.

Gonna hold onto this copy for now, then.  Got 30 days to exchange it anyway.  Did your copy of FIFA run off the disc fine too?

Yeah it ran fine off the disc, didn't have any scratches or anything.

Hell if all else fails, stick it in the freezer for a couple of hours and then wipe it with a cloth. That sorted out a really scratched copy of Dead Rising I had.

The PC version is very playable and all that, it just has a terrible interface and isn't really all that different than the first Sacred.  And it as terrible art.  Play as the robot thing.  And terrible VA.

Man, that opening movie was awesomely-bad personified.  The cheesy butt-rock made it even better!

Well, it was kinda difficult to play at first with the install errors, and then the code not working.   :-\

I loved the hell out of both Champions Of Norrath games on PS2.  Been a while since I played something like them though.  I've still got Diablo II and the first Sacred sitting here unplayed...dunno if Sacred 1 would even run on my MacBook.   :lol

Anyone interested in playing this game should listen to Prole's tips on the Borecast.  He mentioned how he created a character that was able to kill the final boss in a few hits.

OK the console versions, the Xbox 360 build at least, definitely are NOT native 1080p

why did this dev even go ahead and claim that Sacred 2 would be native 1080p on both PS3/360, on Beyond3D? what a liar

the amount of slowdown and screen tearing in this game is almost disturbing, I'm getting tired of this gen and its Nintendo 64 worthy image qualities and framerates

I think the console versions also have a different menu interface system and let you slot up to 12 abilities at one time (using the L and R buttons to toggle which combat arts/magic you want to use).

The game is still "awesomely bad" to me.  I ended up starting over with a different character and have been traveling around the map doing quests; the frame rate is so much better inside dungeons, so I hope there's more of them and that they get longer and longer.  Did a public game and two people joined, but it really didn't matter much.  You can teleport to other players' locations on the world map at any time, and it pretty much ended up being the three of us going around doing our own thing.  It's obviously gonna be much better with friends, but no one I usually play with got this.

comfy couch, bitch

Actually i am sitting in a comfy chair...

PC game just frustrated me,mostly control wise,it just felt clunky

On 360 you have everything at hand, you can map powers to 12 slots to abyx buttons, you can combine up to 4 powers to a single slot...

Camera is always centered on you,so controller really works well here.

just came back with the ps3 version from gamestop...creating a character now.  i dumped my infamous pre-order and decided to buy this instead as all of the impressions i've read are amazing. it's like a dream game come true.  tons and tons of loot, an unbelievably massive world, online play, customization, and great controls...sounds epic.

meanwhile, infamous is probably just a rental.  the only reason i pre-ordered it was for the uncharted beta.  i'll just rent it for 10 bucks and finish it in a week.

by the way, the console versions of sacred 2 are better than the pc versions.  in the gaf thread people are saying the controls are actually way better on the consoles... yet another reason pc gaming sucks.

which class should i pick:

seraphim -- guardians of the world, it's a female...seems like angels

dryad - a woman who is earthy and like a druid

shadow warrior - he said he was a warrior that died and then was brought back into the world, robbed of the peace from death. guy with dark tan skin and glowing eyes

inquisitor - high priest of the high elves, guy wearing magician robes

high elf - woman elf

temple guardian - some sort of ancient robot with a wolf head lol

Can you change the difficulty? I have like 25k, level 10, have yet to die, one arrow kills most enemies...
Yes you can...I dunno how but I read it somewhere.  You can change it to Silver.  Everyone who is getting the game now make sure to start on Silver not Bronze

I'm a little concerned about the screen tearing I saw on the gameplay video of the PS3 version I'm watching. I hate it when games don't use vsync  :-\
Yes there is tearing...it's not Uncharted-level tearing but it's there.  It's really not an issue unless you're one of those elite OCD-ridden graphics whores that whines over a frame drop or two.  It's fine, trust me.

Anyway, the game is incredible -- a loot whore's dream come true.  Better than every jrpg released in the last decade.  It's probably the best in this genre since Diablo 2 came out a decade ago.  The fact that this game got 6s across the board is an absolute disgrace...I'm serious. You gotta wonder if they even played the game more than an hour or two.

Also, the controls are excellent...which kinda confirms my suspicion that most reviewers didn't play it much because once you're 2-3 hours in, the controls become second nature and you really begin to see how intuitive they are.  The ability to map the various attacks to the face buttons is great, and then being able to hold R2 or L2 for another "set" of mapped face buttons works perfectly.  There's also combinations where you can map several attacks to one button and your character does them all in succession.

Menu system is fine too...just takes an hour to get used.  Sacred 2 is a must-buy if you enjoy loot-finding and rpgs in general, but especially loot-finding.

My first big find was an axe called Doom Cleaver that was lit with fire :hyper

by the way, i recommend you try the bow as well as the melee.  The bow attacks are really satisfying for some reason... maybe it's the sound and the impact of the arrows, I dunno.  I found a really badass bow too...sell value is over 3k. I'm like lvl 9

yo does anyone know how to change the online settings?  yesterday a bunch of people would join my game which was cool but i just realized i put the level requirement + or - 2 meaning only people within 2 levels lower or higher can join...which probably wasn't a good idea.  the other options were 5, 7, 10 etc...

I see nowhere i can change it.  when you start the game, you get an option of "Continue" or "Create game"...and when you pick create game which has the level req option and other online options there you can only select "New Campaign" not continue your other campaign...

"Survival bonus" is an ingenious feature... basically the longer you stay alive without dying, the better drops you get, which is indicated by a percentage called survival bonus.  Mine's at like 30%...haven't died in hours.  It's an ingenious feature because it gives you the anxiety/thrill of trying not to die as if it were hardcore mode + better loot if you do manage to survive.  I hope Diablo 3 copies this.

BEST GAME EVER CONFIRMED

I just did a quest where I had to help the lead singer of Blind Guardian recover the band's instruments from an undead army. And my reward was a CG Blind Guardian concert where they performed for orcs and werewolves, and I get to keep their weapons, which happen to function as extremely bad ass weapons.

I can't say I have a problem with the interface; it's really easy to navigate, but then I never played it on PC.  Yeah, the visuals... :lol  Unless I'm going crazy, the game did seem to run smoother at 720p versus 1080p though.

Nooooo I wanted this to be good  :gloomy

Remember, Prole's coming off the PC version of this game.  It probably won't bother you as much.  I posted how ugly the game is and how janky the frame rate is on day one, and on places like GAF, I had people disagreeing and saying it looked "absolutely gorgeous."  This is LOL-worthy.  If you don't mind the frame rate, I say give it a try, Mox.  It's a decent game for what it is, and the world is HUGE.

I wish Snowblind would make a Champions game on PS3.   :'(

Wow. Griffinborough is pretty awful. I have the game installed and the game still locks the camera and does the loading thing every few feet. This is the only spot in the game where I've been overly annoyed.

This a bad B-movie of a game. It's like, "Oh hey welcome to sacred 2 heres a sword you don't like it okay here's a cape and a sword thats on fire are you bored? sorry heres a cave with a flaming green axe okay hey did you know you can bring people back from the dead you can oh guess what you can summon undead spectres to fight for you have you seen the skill tree? want a tiger to ride? we can get you a tiger hey look pirates kill the pirates fuck yeeeeeaahh"

The N64 graphics and janky 2fps are part of the charm. It reminds me of that 3D Gauntlet game, just free-roam and with an obscene skill tree to hang yourself on on. It RULES.

Also, I am hoping the obscenely low difficulty is onyl because I'm still in the "first" little area. Although, it is amusing to leap into a group of brigands and start stacking corpses. I'd just like to have to use a little more strategy.

Well i'd hate to "settle" for the ps3 version when I can wait until I get a new PC down the road...sigh maybe i'll just go back to Titan Quest.

I'm really attracted to the open world go anywhere thing of this game, though.

The console controls are confirmed superior to the PC controls.  Having 12 face buttons mappable allowing instant one-button CA casting destroys the PC version with the keyboard + mouse click CA controls.  That one improvement alone makes the console version superior because you use the CA literally all the time.

This isn't a theory or my "opinion", it's a fact.  I've read about it on the official Sacred 2 forums and GAF thread as well, and they all pretty much agree.

Anyway, my only legitimate complaint about this game is the difficulty level.  As someone said earlier, it's just too easy, even on Silver.  Bronze must feel like you're playing a game on the Wii because I'm cutting through all the enemies on Silver with great ease.

I wish Gold difficulty was unlocked right off the bat but you have to finish the Silver main quests before unlocking it.  And then there's Platinum where you have to complete Gold before unlocking and then finally Nobium...same thing.

With that said, this game is all about the loot and exploring the massive world.  One thing I'm surprised about is that I haven't got bored of doing these completely inane quests...I figured I'd get bored with them being meaningless side quests but I just keep doing them like a machine.  I find them addictive with the rewards you get and stuff... they're also fairly quick to travel to.  It's not like in Far Cry 2 where you gotta trek for miles to get to the next side quest... it only takes a minute thanks to the portals, boats, etc.

So yeah, if not for the difficulty, this would be a 10/10.  As it is, I give it a 9/10.  The thing is, I'm not sure how I feel about having to complete Silver to unlock Gold because it kinda makes me want to just rush through the main quests and unlock Gold then Platinum then Niobium, but I was hoping for an epic first-time play-through instead of rushing through it like that.

There's also level requirements for the difficulties which I'm a bit confused about.  60 to unlock Gold, 100 to unlock Platinum, 140 to unlock Niobium.

Yeah, the difficulty thing is a downer. In Diablo it was acceptable because you had a MOB of dudes. So far my biggest Sacred 2 mob has been like 5 dudes. And yeah, it's amusing to cut down 2, raise them from the dead and watch them chow on their former companions, but I just wish it mattered more. Especially with the byzantine and entirely unexplained combat/skill trees. It would be super easy to fuck yourself without meaning to. I wish the tutorials were a little more sensible- The Blacksmithing tutorial is like. Some guy loses some shit, so you go get it back and then he goes, "Okay, go see the Blacksmith". What the fuck? That's not a tutorial.

But on the whole it's 100% fun. It's all about action and cool shit and I can forgive the small stuff.

If anyone wants to play tonight, I'll be around btw 6a nd 8ish

After firing up the game last night, I personally found the over the shoulder camera a bit too limited in view for my tastes. I prefer the top down view so I can make better use of my bow.

Not liking this game is on the same par as not liking ice cream or donuts. Fats and sugars are delicious. Likewise, lootwh0re lootfests with flaming weapons and tigers and hellhounds and METAL BANDS who give you GUITAR WEAPONS are delicious.

Pretty much. It's a bit of a mess from what I've seen so far, but yeah, it tickles the lootwhore nerves in all the right ways.

One of those games where within the first five minutes of playing, you're thinking "Uh oh, what buggy mess have I bought in to," until you get outside and start dealing death. Then it's like slipping into a comfortable pair of assless chaps.

So I got up to level 9 last night, and I'm starting to see some better drops. I'm getting to the point where I don't have to constantly monitor my health when I'm fighting more than one enemy at a time, which is nice.

Also, last night I actually looked at the overworld map. Much larger than I expected. Very cool.

Finally, after doing a bit of searching, it seems that a patch is in the works, though I don't know if it will fix any of the screen tearing, draw-in or performance issues. Apparently some folks have just flat-out lost their saves, so it may be to address this. Fingers crossed.

I have yet to buy anything from a merchant. I have like 300k gold, I bought a pretty horse.

Anyway, you can do it when you add those skill categories like "blach blah lore" and "blah blah focus"

Well, after looking through the menus and sub-menus time and time again thinking I was a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow,I discovered the Shadow Warrior class doesn't have the bargaining skill available to it.  :'(

Looks like I'll have to pump up awareness and hope I hit some better loot that way.
