Title: eMusic
Post by: chronovore on May 14, 2009, 02:10:59 AM
Anyone else here on eMusic? After Last.fm decided to hobble itself and not play anymore recommended tracks, friends' libraries, etc. a local friend recommended it to me. I'm really enjoying the 50 free tracks, and will probably convert to a subscription unless something ugly rears its head.
+ DRM-free MP3 tracks
+ subscription level determines number of downloads per month
+ stop the subscription at any time, keep the tracks (there was some other service which basically kept users locked in; drop the subscription, say goodbye to "your" music)
+ interesting and diverse catalog

- not much old stuff
- not a lot of major labels' artists
- if there are any SNS related features, they're not well implemented: i.e. I've not been able to find them yet, though "friends" and "neighbors" are occasionally mentioned in the FAQ stuff

The latest EP from new-wave veterans Sparks is danceable, hyperproduced stuff. It's there, but I'm enjoying hearing the whole Angst In My Pants album for the first time since vinyl.

I exploited one of their free offers to get a Delmontes album. Decent quality stuff.

Yeah, I've considered just canceling and re-applying with various email addys to get 2-300 free tracks, but (a) it requires a credit card and (b) I'd rather just support the model. I suspect they're aware of how easily they can be abused, and the record labels likely clamor for more protection, but it's not like music is hard to find on P2P. I think the biggest barrier to monetizing digitized media, distributed on the internet, is the troublesomeness of trying to use it.

I think I blabbed about this in a different thread, but I am a fan of Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. They have that Shhh... song on the PAX track back for Rock Band. I looked it up on iTunes, no love. I went to their myspace site, their official site, and their label's site. No love. No place had Shhh... for sale. Here I am traipsing all over the place, all the spots where I should be able to hand over some money and get the song, but it's not available. Finally I found a direct download link in a comment on a page detailing a torrent that had all the DLC songs /except/ for that one.

There's a bunch of TV/movie stuff on iTunes Music Store that I'd like to download and watch, but with FairPlay DRM in the mix, it won't play on my Xbox which streams just about anything else really nicely. I'm not about to go buy an iTV just so I can play the DRM movies in my collection, where everything else is already handled through Connect360 so handily.

Wow. I'm just rambling on and on. Probably should not have drunk a whole pot of coffee and had Mr. Donuts sugarbombs.

I used to have a sub. I REALLY like their "Collections", i.e. some expert on staff will do a collection of like "The 10 Best Calypso Records, 1940-1945, that you never heard" and they're always really great. It wasn't so spectacular for new releases.

I'm a member.

My tastes run towards the eclectic and I love, love, love the place.
