Title: Internet Radio? Which are the tubez to which I should listen?
Post by: chronovore on May 17, 2009, 11:21:58 PM
I forgot my iPod today, and am slumming through crappy house/techno broadcast from Ireland. Between this, and Live365's apparent 32kbps streams which sound like they're playing through pillows, I'm at wit's end.

EVILBORE! FROM HELL'S HEART, I GRASP AT THEE! What should I be listening to?

Thanks. Scoping this right now. Any radiostation which also features standalone MP3 links is alright by me.

Incidentally, I'll not install RealPlayer on anything. Ever again. So the BBC stuff, good as it may be, is out.

It's my favorite radio station here in Seattle, they just happen to put their stream online.

Pandora.com (http://Pandora.com)

That's my favorite audio service, but they're blocked outside of the North American IP address range. I can't install IP addy spoofing s/w on my work machine, so I'm screwed.

I've been listening to this all day, even though I remembered my iPod this time. I like that it's a Seattle station; I miss Washington. Not as fond of the membership drive ads though. Ironically, I'd consider paying for a stream without the ads, but that's probably not the way it works. Still, lots of really good music.

Chrono - I talked to you about this a little earlier, but what you really want to do is install Orb on your PC so you can stream all your stuff. Never again will you know the agony of no music at work. You can access it all via any web browser, or via the iPhone/Touch client. The PC app is free, the iPhone one costs real monies. But there are a number of alternatives now, some of which may be free/cheap; Orb is just the one I know and can recommend.

Also, as i mentioned, imeem is a good alternative to Pandora and it works on J iPhones and via the net in Japan. (somebody somewhere fucked up, is my guess)

If you like yor classic rock then you should check out Alice Cooper's show on Planet Rock. Great music plus great observations and anecdotes from someone who's been there and done it all. Plus he's funny as hell.

Breakfast with Alice (http://www.planetrock.com/breakfast-with-alice.htm) :rock

Use the listen again feature at the top of the page and click on Alice's link for the stream. You can also skip the ads if you wish.

Better than Pandora.

And like Pandora, it's IP blocked to my part of the world. Thanks for the pointer though. I may use Anchor Free to check it out from home. And Pandora. God, I miss Pandora.

Cormacaroni-and-Cheese, thanks for the imeem tip. Yeah, it seems pretty good, though I'm not sure what it's targeting yet. It hosts your music if you want, or it plays you random ("featured") crap which is doing better than 50/50 so far, so I'm happy. Anyway, I'll hit up Orb and pay for the app and never be alone again. Or I might use SimplifyMedia at work, even though they don't like iTunes being installed on the machines, but all they do is furrow their IT brows at me, so maybe I'll just do it. Thanks!
