Title: Thanks a lot, iPhone auto-correct
Post by: border on May 19, 2009, 03:04:07 AM
Sent a text message to my boss today because a lady called about some item she wanted to special order, and he was supposed to return her call with the order status.  She was fairly annoyed at having to deal with me, and said something snotty along the lines of "Well, I don't like it when people say they are going to return my call and then they don't".  So I sent him a text message to inform him that he needed to give her a ring, and warn him that he'd be dealing with a semi-irate customer.  The message was intended to read:

"Marlena Smith called about <item>, she is at 555-2121.  She was super pissy."

Of course the iPhone doesn't think that "pissy" is an actual word, so it corrected the spelling and I didn't notice until I'd already sent the message.  The resulting text was:

"Marlena Smith called about <item>, she is at 555-2121.  She was super pussy."

I've had this happen before, but it's been more of the opposite for me, changing it from "she is such a fucking cunt" to "she is such a ducking cube," for example.  :maf

This is sort of my beef with all of Apple's products condensed into one anecdote. You either do a task in their  expected way ( in this case, use their vocabulary) , or the result is a disaster.

Can't you turn that off? Auto-correct lasts about five seconds with me when I start using a program with it.

Yeah, the auto-correct is off on mine now too, though I don't have any colorful anecdotes to support why.

I just don't get why, with all the other nice user interface elements, the auto-correct seems implemented in the most counterintuitive fashion. When it pops up its suggestion, what is the "NO NO NO" gesture? Tap anywhere, and it says, "Great! Here's that word I thought you wanted, inserted neatly over where you were trying to put that other word in!" It's like they kept the one thing that worked the worst in Newton technology for this.
