I've got some advice for you.
LCD HDTV's are still a very high tech thing. Meaning the better ones are far better than the cheap ones.
CRT HDTV's are an older technology, but they still look quite awesome, and even the cheap ones look nice.
So, if you're really trying to buy and HDTV on the cheap right now, your best bet is a 26-30 inch CRT HDTV.
If you want to spend $1,000 or more, than you could go with one of the better brand LCD HDTV's, from Sony or Samsung. Those brands are the two best in that category.
Lastly, if you've got $1,300 or so to spend, Sony's 42" LCD Rear Projection HDTV is a fantastic option. This is my main gaming tv, and it's nearly perfect for gaming. It's pretty big, the picture is very good, and it offers just about any option you could want as a gamer, and it's not that expensive all things considered.
