It's Hockey/NBA Playoff season so a lot of us are sipping on beer. So, lets recommend some good playoff beer.
So that being said, I've had a chance to try out Michelobs attempts at making a few wheat beers.
The Hop Hound is an Amber Ale... it isn't all that bad. It could have a bit stronger taste to it imo. But overall it isn't bad. It doesn't stand up against Bells Amber Ale. But it is drinkable and if you don't want a strong amber, this isn't bad. Horrible name though.
The Honey Wheat is... well... it's not all that great, leaves a bad after taste in your mouth. I'm not a fan, I had only half of it and dumped it out, really not that great at all.
The Dunkel Weiss is fucking horrible. Probably the worst Dunkel Weiss I've ever tasted. It is just god awful. I tried to give it a shot, but good god it's horrible. I do not recommend what so ever.
The best one of them all was Shock Top. I'm a Belgian Wheat Beer fan (Blue Moon) and this seems like Michelobs attempt at making a Blue Moon ripoff. But like some BM ripoffs, this one is pretty good. I enjoyed it. IMO it's not as good as Blue Moon, but a pretty good attempt at it. I recommend if you feel like it. Blue Moon is better though.
Any recommendations for me guys? I've been looking for some good Stouts, Dark Beers in general. Some that I should be able to obtain down here in the horrible state of Alabama. :P
Also anyone going to the Birmingham Beer Fest?

I used to be the quality over quantity guy, but in my old age it just isn't practical/affordable. I have relegated myself to a steady diet of Keystone light 30 packs. :-\
-
Last night I had a blonde Leffe with dinner. It was pretty damned fantastic.
If you're in North America, try a Fat Tire if you enjoy amber ale type stuff.
-
damn, I thought this thread would blow up w/ all the alcoholics we have here. :P

I actually just quit drinking, but before that I was all about Land Shark. It's like a much more palatable Corona. Drink it, and do not worry yourself that you are giving money to Jimmy Buffet. He is a nice man.

Oh, Cyanista. How the mighty have fallen.
If by "palatable" you mean "a shitty malt liquor version of" then yes, agreed!
Anyways, I think Lordmaji wanted some real beer so...

...is some of the best shit I've poured down me gullet in a while. It's almost... spicy? Peppery? Don't let it scare you - if you like complex beers, this is a real braintwister.
Goes lovely with one of these:

Ok, consider mine a beer recommendation for people who don't want to become obese hippopotamii. :yuck

All things in moderation, my dear. Especially moderation.
-
I appreciate the replies for sure. I'm interested in checking out a few good dark beers, or some good wheat beers. :)
-
Amber Bock, go go texas.
I had something called 1554 once that was so thick you could stand a straw up in it. it tasted a lot like cold coffee. :(
Blue Moon is decent, especially with an orange slice. Pretty sure that's a wheat.
I'm a woman of moderate tastes, when it comes to beer.
-
Of what I tried:
Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier (wheat- good staple)
Weihenstephaner Dukel (dark wheat-okay not blown away by it)
Frankisizer Hefeweizen (like weihenstephaner but more 'sessionable')
Schneider Aventinus (dark wheat-really good)
try beeradvocate.com for reviews.

If you quit, you will never win!

I like beer of the BBC variety. Dark, rich and thick.
I also like Bluemoon and am looking for a summer brew, something for the beach as well.

Kamikaze, a local craft beer pub, just celebrated their one year anniversary yesterday. It was glorious. Half price on all beer, standing space only, and apparently most of the beautiful women in Osaka showed up before their "este salon" work began in the later evening. And they know how to drink. I made several new friends and enjoyed a parade of good beer:
Flying Monkey Dogfight Pale Ale
Yellow Snow IPA
ONI Densetsu Kin-ONI Pale Ale x3 (brilliant)
Minoh W-IPA
-
Totally hitting up Kamikaze next Spring while I'm in Osaka. Hopefully we can get out to Minoh and visit the brewery, too.
Heading down to Bend, OR for the Memorial Day Weekend. Boneyard, Crux, 10 Barrel, Ale Apothecary, Deschutes, Goodlife, Silver Moon, Bend Brewing, etc. Awesome weekend confirmed.

Had this today and OMFG wow...

Also had a few beers from Kelso in Brooklyn. My local hangout spot had a Kelso showcase and the brewery owner and his wife were in there. Very friendly people. I dug their saison but they had this "fuku" beer (made exclusively for Momofuku, a fancy NYC restaurant) that I tried due to its name but didn't like very much, tasted like miso soup :yuck

This seemed appropriate for a Wednesday night.

I've had that. It didn't do much for me, but I failed to drop the lemon in it, which is key to enjoying hefeweizen for me.

I've been to the waterfall at Minoh, but my traveling companions don't drink, so they were uninterested in visiting the brewery. I'll have to get out there again. It's not like it's all that far, maybe 90 minutes by train.
Kamikaze was really good. I spent about 15 minutes feeling awkward, and then just started chatting with people. One mom brought a young boy who wanted to play, so I raised him up to look around, and managed to tear my straight up the back. A drop-dead gorgeous woman asked if she could draw something on my back, so I got a mascara tattoo which proclaims my love of beer.

:lol beer-chan :uguu
fuck that chocolate milk stout^^^ I'm done with that gimmicky shit!
What I need are some sour beers. I love the framboise and peche lambics that I tried, but sour non-lambics would be good. I usually only have one bottle of something a night when I drink, so I like it to be higher ABV

Where do you live? Distribution area is important.
1. Cascade Barrelhouse from Portland, OR makes awesome but pricey ($25-$30 for a 750ml bottle) sours. They only distribute to OR and WA, but they ship to most states.
http://shop.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com/
2. New Belgium makes some awesome sours as part of their Lips of Faith lineup. La Folie is pretty much available year round, and they have some others that pop up from time to time (Tart Lychee, Le Terroir, Clutch, etc.). Right now their Transatlantic Kriek is available. Expect to pay about $15 for a 22 oz. bottle for their Lips of Faith sours. Also you should note that not all LoF beers are sours. It's their high-brow experimental lineup of stuff, so you'll see Imperial IPAs, saisons, stouts, etc.
3. Jolly Pumpkin out of Michigan has some good entry level sour beers. Available in most states, but not here in WA.
4. Russian River in Santa Rosa, CA has epic sours in their -tion lineup. Supplication (Sour brown with cherries in pinot barrels), Sanctification (sour blonde), Temptation (sour blonde in white wine barrels, reminds me of champaigne), Consecration (sour brown with currants) and Beatification are all great. Russian River only distributes to CA, OR and CO currently. They pulled out of WA in December. Expect to payr $12-$15 for a 375 ml bottle.
5. Cantillon from Brussels is the holy grail of sours/lambics. They're distributed via Shelton Brothers in the states and are pretty damn hard to find unless you know the guy at your local bottle shop. Easy to snag in Canada, surprisingly enough. Drei Fontein in Brussels also makes awesome sours.
6. Crooked Stave in Colorado makes awesome stuff.
7. Logsdon Farmhouse Ales in Hood River, OR has great saisons that are tart (Peche and Brett, Seizon Bretta), and they've also got Cerasus, a kriek/cherry sour.
8. Deschutes has The Dissident, which is a Flanders Oud Bruin. Only available in the Fall, but you should be able to track down a bottle somewhere.
9. People like Duchesse De Bourgogne, but I'm not a fan. It can be found pretty much everywhere.
10. Tilquin Gueuze is awesome and underrated. Pricey, but easily obtainable and they use blends from Cantillon.
11. Upright Brewing in Portland, OR.
12. The Commons in Portland, OR. Do you notice a theme with Portland and sours? They're kicking our ass up in Seattle.
Here are some list wars for you to check out.
American Wild Ales (Sours. Can' technically be called lambics if they're not made in a certain region near Brussels):

Whoops. Double post.
-
Shelton Brothers are the worst.
-
whoa, thanks for the list. I'm pretty sure I saw some of those at the store yesterday.
I'm in Chicago...I'll have to see which one of those is distributed here. or just ask the beer nerds at the store, i guess.
the Triple IPA I had the other night made me really wanna try a bunch of different beers. I've had a bunch of microbrew and usually buy something "easier" like belgians, mostly Karmeliet. That IPA was a neat experience though--had to take slow sips, but the flavor had a real distinct beginning, middle, and end. Then the last inch was warmed up and the flavor was too intense to sip anymore. :lol

Shelton Brothers are the worst.
They truly are. Drives me nuts how many awesome breweries work with them.
They're finally coming back to WA. But they still suck.
