From the patch notes
- You now find new and old items as you play, instead of through achievements
:o
-
yeah, I read this on gaf. Sounds awesome.
I was just getting back into TF2, worried that servers were going to be people farming achievements again. Now I can get things without any work randomly while I go about enjoying the game.
-
i only played a week or so of TF2, mainly as a medic on payload maps. i'm looking forwards to getting back into it.
it's free/$10 this weekend too
-
People are still doing that. I was in a game just now where EVERYONE was a sniper(so I played heavy) and then a lone scout joins and get the piss jar and 30 other players start raging about how they've been working since the patch went live to get the unlocks.
I must be a massive TF2 noob because none of that makes any sense (besides everyone playing sniper)

I'm don't care about this update, but man was meet the spy good.
oh man, that sounds fucking awesome.
random guy who joins to have fun gets rewarded rather than the 30 nerds who wanted to spend all night getting a virtual jar of piss. Valve :bow2

so EB gonna set up some matches, or will my Orange Box continue to collect dust

Viz and I play a lot. Just join one of us.
-
yeah tf2 is fun but the new unlock system is hit or miss
ive gone about 10 hours without anything
and apparently you can sit on spectator all day and get stuff
plus you can get duplicates of stuff you already have
-
well after 10 hours of getting nothing i just got an unlockable
an ubersaw (which luckily I didnt have)
the problem is I was spectating

Yeah I made my own server before I went to bed and put a few bots in it, then spectated while I slept. I got the Jarate from doing that. :D

PC?
-
of course PC
-
Hmmm, dunno if I have time. What server are you guys usually on?
-
ok, these unlocks kinda suck.
it's really random and not frequent enough to make a random item you don't use seem good enough.
-
Both of TF2's unlock systems have been garbage. Neither one rewards players in a consistent, regular fashion. Good unlock systems are like Skinner Boxes that create that legendary "just one more level/map/mission/quest" desire.
edit: I think I'm going to buy this:

How classy.

I had that feeling last night when I unlocked one item per match on this one server. I thought there was a pattern going at first, so even though I was tired I kept playing thinking I might unlock something. Three games later I didn't unlock anything.
I still do prefer this to the other one. Getting specific achievements in an online game to unlock gameplay enhancements is one of the world systems you can have.
From what I can tell, the upgraded items are pretty useful. The sniper smg is really shitty, but the jar of piss is really useful.
-
The previous system had potential. The problem was that Valve actually got achievements right, which made them unsuitable for doling out progression.
TF2 achievements rule. They are all impressive feats that require skill and dedication. I think that's exactly what achievements should be. None of this "Beat Chapter 1" bullshit.
But when you lock content behind these crazy ass tasks, you're basically giving the finger to any player who's not super awesome or willing to game the system.
-
Trading isn't in yet. There is supposed to be a patch for it later.
-
Haven't played TF2 in a long time, I think I may boot it up this afternoon.
-
i got the huntsman yesterday, easily my favorite weapon by far
it makes the sniper a mid-short range beast, and if you time it right you can counter other snipers with it which is hilarious

Fuck, I just played for the past three hours. I forgot how much I loved TF2.

Played a few rounds with Greenman. At first I thought all my unlocked weapons had disappeared but I managed to find them lol
medic :bow
-
Ughh, I want new weapons, why won't they drop for me :(

Good grief, you were owning spies like little bitches. I liked the one about 3/4ths through where he popped out from near the turret, and he tried to catch the arrow in his teeth. He kind of did.

Is there any kind of decent tutorial or way to learn this game? I jumped in tonight and got a ton of cheap ass kills with the Pyro, but I'd like to learn how to play the game properly :)

look at Viz's vid, nobody knows how to play properly. just pick a class and run out and kill things and die. whichever you feel most comfortable with, stick with it.
if you want to be cheap and annoying, be engineer. if you want to have fun, pick scout or sniper.
-
I haven't played in like nine months.
-
Yea I learned how to play by trying out various classes, then deciding which felt best for me. I really like being a medic. Pyro is very fun too.
-
I tried out Spy a couple times but wasn't really getting it. You can't attack when cloaked.....your little knife/shiv thing isn't all too effective.....there's this box that is supposed to disable turrets I think but damned if I know how to use it.
Scout seemed okay, but not like he excelled in any particular area.

spy is the hardest class, you have to evade enemies while cloaked, choose a wise disguise and backstab people without letting the enemy know you are around. Sap a turret first then backstab the engie if possible, the knife is worthless unless you get a backstab. Avoid pyros like plague.
Scout is fast but dies easily, they count as two people when capturing/moving the payload which is their main use, get up close with the shotgun they use and pull the trigger, also avoid pyros like the plague.
pyro or medic is the best class for anyone new, both are helpful and easy to play
sorry im assuming you are new, heh
-
Well, it should be pretty obvious that I'm new :) I'm trying it out for the free weekend, and can't help but feel like Valve is screwing themselves by not including some tutorial modes to help people learn the maps and the classes. On the bright side they do a pretty good job of explaining the game modes to you at least.
Yes, Pyro is a lot of fun.....but it does feel mega cheap at times :lol
What are you supposed to be doing with Soldier and Demoman?
-
Soldier is the most straight forward class. You run, you jump, you shoot rockets at things.
-
Medic is the easiest class to play. Just heal people who are calling for the doctor and stick to a meatshield the rest of the time.
-
dead ringer is awesome
the best was when I let another spy kill me, then see him stand there and disguise himself as I sneak up and kill him.
-
I havent played many of the classes much, but I find the medic awesome fun to play. probably because my twitch abilities are fading as i get older
-
I was failing kinda hard last night as a medic, charging folks at the wrong time constantly :lol
-
My clan's been kicking spectators like crazy from our servers. People are just AFKing now to get the items.
-
I'm getting 2 and only 2 weapons a day. So far no repeats. I don't know if it's a pattern or what.
So far only Dead Ringer and Jarate are any good. I want the bow so bad.
-
i like this game but im so fucking hopeless at it.

As you said, your twitch skills are fading. Go play some Civ4, grandpa.

I believe you're doing it correctly. ;-)
-
got my first drops last night :hyper
payload or whatever the map is with dueling carts is awesome
-
plr_pipeline
its the only payload race map, and i agree its the new hotness
best mode yet imo
-
I took about 5 hours, but I finally got my first drop this afternoon, and it was The Jarate! :hyper
-
And then 30 minutes later, I got it again. :-\
-
Do you still get drops from achievements? I've gotten two of the Medic items randomly, but I don't really ever play Medic. But I almost have most of the non-drop Sniper achievements.
-
In about 8 hours of play, I've only found 3 items.
-
I have four in about 9. I got the awesome pyro weaon too :hyper

loul
-
It never gets old.
-
They patched in Sniper and Spy milestones now, so you can get the weapons that way. I'm at 14/38 on Sniper now.
-
I got the medic gun first day back to playing, but nothing since. I use to be heavy Medic with engy second, but I've been doing mostly Demo since coming back.
-
At 16/38 on Sniper, but I can't seem to get the Jarate achievement to trigger where you put out a teammate's fire.
