Title: I'm going to New York! What should I be wary of?
Post by: Oblivion on May 23, 2009, 02:38:04 AM
There's a family reunion that'll be going on in a few weeks, and it'll be the first time that I'd be seeing my mom and little brother in two years. However, I've never been to New York. I know some EBers (or Bers, I guess) live in NY, so a rundown of the DOs and DON'Ts would be helpful.

Stay out of East New York and the South Bronx and you should be pretty fine. It's a lot safer here than in the 80's.

Definitely check out the Met, MOMA, Empire State Bldg, Museum of Natural History, Bronx Zoo, Ellis Island, all that touristy stuff.

This. All that tourist stuff is a lot of fun, especially since it's your first time in the city. I personally love the MoMA.

Oh God, Oblivion, you'll be fine, especially if you stay in Manhattan, doing regular touristy stuff. Don't be a pansy.  New Yorkers are pretty helpful, even though we are known to be rude.

Do's: Have fun, eat great food, go to shows if that's you thing, visit the museums and parks, go on the Staten Island Ferry, visit Ground Zero, check out the farmer's market at Union Square, cross the Brooklyn Bridge, explore Brooklyn--DUMBO, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint have some great stuff, try to catch a game in one of the new baseball stadiums, go to Ziegfield's for a movie, enjoy the nightlife, use the the subway.

Don't: Stand in the middle of the sidewallk to take pictures, move to the side.  Don't give panhandler's money.  Don't be afraid to ask for directions.

There are a lot of violent black people. I think you should be careful. Sometimes, they rob people.

I grew up the South Bronx and I've never been robbed.*crosses fingers*  That said, if Oblivion sticks with touristy stuff, he'll be fine.  I can't stand the culture of fear.

I know you're joking, Veldt.

i'd mainly hang around chelsea, soho and east village, especially the latter. you'll have no problems finding something interesting to do or accidentally walk upon and if you can, def spend a day in central park. also check brooklynvegan.com daily when you're in nyc to see a list of shows/concerts that'll be taking place if that's your thing at all.

oh yeh, if you love contemporary modern art and only have time to visit one museum, fuck the MOMA and jsut go to PS1 if you can.

The Bronx Zoo is free on Wednesdays. They ask for a donation, but you don't have to give them shit if you don't want to. Public school is still open now, so go in the morning while the annoying ass kids are still in school. Just in case you decide to go...

Also, the Museum of Moving Images is really cool. I went there once in high school and they had all sorts of games and other cool shit that you can mess with. One of the few times that I actually enjoyed being in Queens. Site link: http://www.movingimage.us/site/site.php

I think you mean wary.

Weary is tired.

You will be weary from walking. But not if you take the excellent subway system.
