Title: Who's with me? The Bore getting in shape
Post by: WrikaWrek on May 23, 2009, 11:15:39 PM
Living on my own gives me new found freedom to do shit i couldn't do before. It's funny, but i can completely control my eating habits whereas it was hard before when you had to sit at the table with the rest of your family.

Starting today, i will be going on a diet, and exercise routine to get my ass in real shape. By september i wanna be in the best shape i've ever been.

As far as the diet goes, i'm gonna straight away divide the day in two stages. Carbs included in the 1st half, non included in the 2nd half. Breakfast will be about Oatmeal, Eggs. Mid morning snack will either be fruit or protein bar. Lunch will be rice, meat, fish, vegetables, lentils. Afternoon snack is the same as mid morning. Dinner will consist of meat or fish plus vegetables, like salad and whatever.

I'm gonna wake up an hour earlier than usual everyday, do 30 push ups, 500 abs and the hardest part will be going to run, with sprints mixed in. At night i'll do another 30x2 push ups, plus 1 to 2 sets of 30, 5 kg each arm.

I want to see what happens 3 months later. Anybody else wanting to change their diet and get in better shape? Come on EB.

Now that the weather is nice, I've started jogging again. I've steadily improved my endurance and am now able to jog for about 25 minutes before hitting a wall.

I've been walking about an hour and a half each day plus work which is rather physical.

Plus not eating much.  I think I had a package of skiddles and a coke for supper one day last week.

I've noticeably slimmed in just the last two weeks alone.

Have you ever tried going a week without it? Last summer I went like two weeks with nothing but water (just happened, wasn't planned) and I didn't miss juice at all.

Word.

I'm gonna try to do a pseudo paleo diet for the next couple months with my starr 5x5 lifting. Try to do the impossible, gain some muscle while losing fat.

SS is king for getting big, but Goddamn does all that milk have an expand style effect on the waist line.

Oatmeal for breakfast
chicken breast+mixed veggies for lunch
chicken breast+mixed veggies for dinner

Start off doing something easy dude, I'll tell you right now that you're lazy ass won't be sticking to that proposed schedule. Go walking three days a week, and do some push ups.

Cormarcaroni and Draft would give you the best advice here.

PD, are you trying to avoid starches?  Your latter meals have no starch, unless you're eating starchy veggies like potatoes or corn.

What worked for me has been eating every 3 hour, all clean stuff, no junk food.  It keeps me from snacking on empty calories--my office is very generous with the free candy--and it primes the metabolism.  I basically eat three meals and two snacks--one in the midmorning and one in the afternoon, between lunch and dinner.

Most of my snacks consist of almonds, plain yoghurt, or fruit.

Woah, good timing for a thread on this.  I just started working out again today after not working out for 2-3 months.

...it was damn tough!  >_<  I was surprised how few mins I could go running without having to go back to walking.  Used to be able to run like a mile and then walk for a bit and then run some more.  But I could barely go 2-3 mins of running at a time today.  Oh well, gotta restart somewhere.

I do feel awesome today afterwards though.  Love the feeling after a good workout.  Same as doing drugs but you don't have to try to find a dealer and it doesn't cost you anything other than time :D

I have rice every a couple times a week, and most of my veggie intake is corn (and carrots)

Potatoes once a week or so, usually with a pot pie

Soon I'll be beating your 25 min wall sucka!

Like I said, gotta restart somewhere.  I did 30 mins but was switching back and forth between jogging and walking because my endurance level is low again.  Gotta build it back up on a day to day basis.  Same with upper body muscle training.

If anything, I'm going to try and run even more to build endurance since.  My diet or whatever I eat daily sounds like what you guys are shifting to.  And there is a gym in my building I visit every so often.  Biggest problem is that I feel like I'm dying after running for 2 or 3 minutes at like 10 mph, which I think is bad because some middle age guy who also uses the gym seems to be doing that for 20 minutes at a time.

It's just training, man. Don't get hung up on age.

The gym I used to go, there was this dude, had to be at least 40, probably closer to 50. This man would hop on the treadmill every day and just rage like 12 mph for 30 minutes. He was a sweaty heap at the end, but no doubt he was smoking dudes half his age on the adjacent machines.

Figure out your program and how you're going to get better.

As long as you're running a bit faster every day (or every week), that's all that matters.

I wish I lived in a more urban environment, or near a decent forest. I can do the mindless weightlifting fine, but running through plain landscapes, or worse yet, using machines, is just intolerable. That, and I need some damned jumps; leaps into somersaults is ridiculously efficient exercise, but the only jumps we have here would have me rolling in gooseshit.

I also really don't care if I lose weight. If anything, I need the bulk to make me look less like a walking dead (alopecia, surliness and critical whiteyness gives you that look). But I need to build both strength and stamina.

No no no. Leap, land, roll, run. I was sore as hell before I got it down (and you look like a total fucking idiot when you fail the roll), but it's good exercise.

Although, I've been seriously wondering about that damned roll you see in all adventure games, including Zelda. If I tried that, with a sword no less, that would probably be one roll straight into the grave.

After the winter stop and injury, I ramped my running back up and this weekend was the second weekend (yesterday) where I ran half a marathon (well, 22.8km/14.17miles). Went better than before the winter. Recovery is faster and faster, legs can take more and more, but it's still tough as hell.
I'm still on the pushup program to 100 ( http://www.hundredpushups.com/week6.html , recommended by Draft ) I'll be doing the last day of week 6 for a couple of times for better form and till I feel confident for the 100 pushup test.

What was your injury?
Little too enthusiastic on the rowing machine, causing, I think, a stress injury on my right buttock (  :-[ )....Couldn't run for a while cause it'd start to hurt.

I can recommend the 100 pushup program. It's hard, but it gives you a schedule and a goal...so you have something to hold on to and shoot for instead of routinely doing pushups, thus making faster progress. It's not a 6 week program though, you'll be stuck on certain weeks or days for a while.

chicken breast+mixed veggies for dinner

Start off doing something easy dude, I'll tell you right now that you're lazy ass won't be sticking to that proposed schedule. Go walking three days a week, and do some push ups.

I kinda already do half of it right now, it's not gonna be a problem for me. Obviously for those that can't get into it full throttle right away, all you have to do is work your way into it.

So maybe you only start by doing half of the things in the 1st week or first 2 weeks, no biggie, just work your way into it. It's always like that, like the ab exercises, you start with with 5x30, then by week 2 you are pushing 5x50, then by week 3 you realize you can push 5x100.

That has happened to me before. The great thing now though, is that i can marry a bunch of things together because i'm on my own.

I wish I lived in a more urban environment, or near a decent forest. I can do the mindless weightlifting fine, but running through plain landscapes, or worse yet, using machines, is just intolerable. I also really don't care if I lose weight. If anything, I need the bulk to make me look less like a walking dead (alopecia, surliness and critical whiteyness gives you that look). But I need to build both strength and stamina.

I live near a huge park. It's awesome. And actually great for sprints. I prefer to work more on the sprints, i think it works more the muscle that way.

I've been jogging every other day. Though, I'm not interested in endurance but in burning as much energy in a short span of time. So I plan on going to my nearest hill and running up it multiple times within 10 Minutes.

Last night I downloaded P90X as I seriously need to shed some weight before the wedding.

That program seems real interesting. Lots of different approaches to fitness that keeps the body in a state of confusion.

Parks around here don't have trees, least of all ones with branches that you could potentially leap over/under. No, instead we get oversized lawns. That's life in the land of frivolous lawsuit and no personal accountability. I can't just run, I need jumps.

For those interested in this, you might want to draw a plan for the week, and stick it in the fridge door.

I just did mine in Excel, i'm gonna trade jogging and sprinting for those cardio videos that come with p90x, and then on Saturday i will be testing myself with jogging and sprinting. See the benefits of the week workout on a more real scenario.

Only day i won't so shit is Sunday, where i might check out the yoga or stretch video of p90x, as those are much more relaxing. My  diet is already shaping up as i planned, it's pretty easy for me to change my eating habits.

Don't understand why.

I don't have the slightest habit of eating a lot, or eating junk food, all i want to do is tone. Because right now i look ok, but i'm not defined.

And the only thing i want really is to define my abs, and be able to run for a while before falling apart. I used to have defined abs during highschool when i played Football, but these days i play football like once a week, and do maybe a couple of push ups here and there.

I don't want to get bigger, i just want to look better.
Title: Re: Who's with me? The Bore getting in shape
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on May 25, 2009, 02:04:08 PM
It's all about routine.  The first day is the easiest and then it gets a little harder the second, then the third, and then almost unbearable the fourth (if it is a big change).  If you keep pushing through, it gets easier again to the point where it is, like I said before, routine.  Back in my obese days, it would take me about two weeks to get a good, typically unbreakable routine going.

My advice is to give yourself a one day (maximum) break.  Losing that one day won't make a big difference unless you go 180 degrees from your plan (ie, load up on a bunch of junk food and clear a case of pop)

I use Excel quite a bit as well.  I like keeping track of the numbers.  I still keep my old journals.  Kind of interesting to see what I did in 2004 versus 2009 in the way I did things.

Good luck.

Unless you're consuming tons of clean calories you will not bulk up magically.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I do mostly swimming, walking-bad knees so running is out of the question for know, and a combination of cross fit and weight lifting, based on Mark Rippetoe's programs.

Starting any habit is difficult, so it is best to ease into it.  The problem with stuff like New Year's Resolutions is that people attempt huge changes overnight.  I agree with t exp, keeping track of your workouts is a great way to motivate yourself.

With that said, that "look" when it comes to being fit is awesome, not too big and looks proportional. I wonder what his training regimen is.

I hate to say "dur hur steroids" but yeah, to get like that most likely he's a guy with a super fast metabolism (think runner's body) that probably has trouble bulking up without some extra juice, rather than a guy who'd be heavier but has cut down.

Fuck, I've never been so out of shape in my life (where talking 10s of lbs here) I feel like some tears and a bowl of ice cream  :'(

I just gave up on this whole DYI routine and went back to my old program for a reboot. If the resulting fatigue (and the unstoppable flood of cursing and self loathing) is any indication, my own design must have been worse than expected. Additionally, I don't think I'll be upgrading to the next training phase any time soon. Yikes.

I'm a pussy so I know i'll never be a fighter. Just when I look at losing weight it always comes down to "Do it for a better looking gf" but honestly, that really isn't enough encouragement to me to lose the extra weight and it's extremely shallow and selfish. So I figure if I convince myself on that thing I'll put the effort to it.
Title: Re: Who's with me? The Bore getting in shape

Call me selfish and shallow then.

And if you wanna be a fighter go out there and be one. 1st thing you gotta do is enlist yourself in Muay Tay or Jiu Jitsu, etc.

Don't be a pussy, just enter a gym and ask for an opinion, the guy will give you a speech and you will be enlisting yourself in no time. I'm going to get myself back into martial arts early next year, when i come back from Milan. Not really feeling this whole acting thing, the guy put me doing Mr Dawes in the play, i don't really like the exposure.

Going to get my ass into jiu Jitsu.

I'm gonna start doing some push ups in the morning and lifting some weights I have in my house to see if I can get in shape without going the damn gym.

I'm interested in strength, speed and to a lesser degree endurance. Looks? No, that ship sailed years ago. Right now I'm better off being a bulky monstrosity, anyway.

I don't understand this; why not just join a gym? Depending on the gym it's like $1-$3 a month.

I'm trying to improve my conditioning it's terrible right now.

We have a decently equipped gym in the clubhouse, but I'd rather use the free weights at home. I use the cardio machines sometimes, but that's about it. I guess some people enjoy the focus of a dedicated training environment, but I can't stand it.

I DL'ed the P90X because it was being talked about ITT.  Now I gotta buy a pullup bar and some resistance bands.  I guess I'll go to the Y until I buy those. :P

I'm now able to jog for 35 minutes straight. And I've started the one-hundred pushups, two-hundred situps, and two-hundred squats programs. After day one, I was incredibly sore. But I'm going to stick with it.

Then you can just stand in the pit and laugh as people bounce off you.  :rock

That Hannibal For King video is insane. It doesn't seem physically possible to do most of those exercises.

Anyway, I go to the gym three times per week (T-Th-Sa). I don't always do cardio, but I did get on the elliptical last night. Never fails that I'm always beside someone who's going at such a leisurely pace he/she might as well be on the couch eating twinkies. Last night, the woman beside me was averaging 3.9 mph. That doesn't seem physically possible, either. Even when I try to slow down, I can't even get to 6 and stay there before I naturally speed back up.
