Title: Why didn't any of you flaming fegs tell me about "Burn Notice"?
Post by: Flannel Boy on May 29, 2009, 04:16:47 AM
I just started to watch Burn Notice a few days ago, just in time because season three starts on June 4th. It's not brilliant, but it's is great escapist television, a fun and cool Walker Texas Ranger. And it co-stars Bruce Campbell!

But I have two problems with the show. First, Michael Westen is too perfect. The man has no flaws and his only vice is eating a second helping of yogurt. Surely a man in his line of work, living under the constant threat of danger, would have picked up a drinking habit or a penchant for Thai ladyboys. Something! Secondly, Fiona is irritating and Gabrielle Anwar's skin looks old and leathery.

Actually, I think Cajole may have recommended it, but he doesn't count. Deserter.

I recall a few appreciation discussions a while back but clearly you weren't listening. :wag

Michael does have flaws - he's incapable of getting close to the people he loves because he's tortured that something might happen to him.  Gosh, he's soooo dreamy.

Since when is keeping your distance from others a flaw? :spin

He is dreamy. No homo. Well some homo.

I adore this show, I've been literally watching nothing else but the first 2 seasons for the last month.

Michael is a stone cold pimp and Fiona is grrowl

Its been called the "GTA" of TV. There are story archs but like House, most of the shows have self contained stories.

i'm inordinately proud of my summation of this show: "One-man A-Team"

really, that's all it is. He's basically on the run from the law (although they flip that around interestingly) and helps out folks with problems by using his skills. He does the planning (Hannibal), the building of gadgets (even puts together a bulletproof car in a montage!) (BA and everybody), the smooth-talking con-man bit (Face), and beats the crap out of anyone if the aforementioned don't work (BA).

ok, he doesn't do the Murdock bit but Bruce is there for comic relief

I love this show, although wasn't too thrilled with the season two finale.  Still, looking very forward to the new season starting soon (isn't it only two weeks away?), plus it's great that we don't have to wait a YEAR for it this time around.

Only clips, not episodes. Hulu is quickly just becoming advertising for the DVDs since they remove full episodes of new shows within days.

Awesome show.  Season 3 is probably going to kick ass if it's going in the direction I think it is.

and yeah, I watched all of Season 1 on Hulu and got the "*whistle* when you're burned, you got nothing" line stuck in my head.

and yeah, that chick needs to eat more food.

I didn't know that Drewsy made threads that weren't about either tennis or prescription drugs. I must have assumed that "Burn Notice" was some kind of designer pain killer.

I wonder if they'll ever take it out of Miami for a whole season. I guess being in Miami is just as big a part of the show as the three main characters.

Two more negatives: First, Fiona is not a believable temptress who can constantly and easily seduces the bad guys. This is really stretching the viewer's credulity. Second, Micheal's accents are hilariously bad. When he was doing his Texas accent, he was channeling a combination of Yosemite Sam and Foghorn Leghorn.

Well the writers just try to make it fun by mixing in some weird accents/cover ID's plus a bunch of bouncing bimbos.  Why you over analyze that I don't know.

The "jobs" do become a lot more complicated as the series goes on though.

In the first few episodes, Anwar or whatever her name is, is pretty close to being batshit crazy. So she's Murdoch with long, girly legs. Which I think Murdoch also did in some old A-Team eps.

I'm a bit disappointed that the show quickly returned to its client-of-the-week formula. As with House, there's a lot of variation possible within a formulaic structure, but still. . . .

Well the new season looks interesting.  It seems Michael is too cut off right now to get what he wants so I wonder where he can get help.

Again, you're taking the show too seriously.  I mean, you are Canadian so maybe you want this show to be like Survivorman where you see a time-lapse video of Michael making the car-bombs and whatever but it's always been more interesting to me to see the actual job go down.

Watching Michael manipulate a target and then go all Jesus-freak on him for example is a lot more interesting than seeing him carry a gym bag for a oil tycoon's daughter.

I'm just a bit ambivalent about the show returning to its formula so soon after the preceding events of season two's finale.

Anyway, here are a couple photos of Lorena Segura York, who played Marta.

Enjoyable first episode of the season, if a bit too formulaic.

Did anyone watch Royal Pains immediately after?  I thought it was pretty good, although it really screamed "Burn Notice with doctors."  Guess the people making the shows feel the same way, since they made an ad for it where Michael from Burn Notice writes the doctor guy a letter telling him how he understands his situation and sends him some stuff.   :lol

At this point, shouldn't Michael be a little more weary of sob stories. He's been been burned by at least half a dozen of them (though Marta's was technically true).

Especially when a Spy buddy comes out of nowhere. Hopefully the writers make him a little more aware of his situation.

But it was implied this was one of the friends he'd lost contact with, and even Sam had done jobs with him in the past.  In the first half of the episode, it almost seemed like his spy buddy was going to become the fourth member of the little team they have going on.

Yep but even then I would have been more wary (in Michael's defense, he did seem suspicious at the beginning). I think this season will probably be made up of people from his past coming forth (with the last season cliffhanger in mind).

Another ho-hum episode. This episode's villain of the week couldn't have been any dumber. And

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The police investigation, while a natural consequence of Michael's lack of agency protection, already bores me. It will probably serve as an easy way for the writers to create added conflict during each week's "case," much as Carla did last season. And Detective Paxon already reminds me of Carla, especially with her slightly smug, quasi-flirty behavior towards Michael.
