Title: Virginity and IQ in Adolescence
Post by: Flannel Boy on December 08, 2006, 09:49:43 PM

Teens are more likely to be virgins if they're significantly dumber or smarter than average.

The site where I stole the graph from speculates that it is because of assortative mating. About 66% of the population are within 15 points of a person with an IQ of 100, while only 12% are within 15 points of a person with an IQ of 130.

Hey! It's a description of the normal curve distribution! I think this is the first time on EB where something actually relevant to my profession has been mentioned.

I'm a school psychologist at an elementary school and a middle school. One of my duties is administering IQ tests to students as part of special education evaluations.

I think it has more to do with your parents. Most of the kids I knew that lost it early (pre-16) had extremely permissive parents or came from one parent households.

IQ tests are meaningless. How could psychometricians create a valid measurement of intelligence after only one century worth of studies? Why, they would need 5000 years at least. Plus how do you measure such important indicators of intelligence like... um bodily-kinesthetics?

Oh well, administering IQ tests is but a tiny portion of what I do.

I think that measures of cognitive ability are pretty worthless on their own, but when it's one part of a large collection of information collected on a student (developmental history, academic skills, social emotional skills, adaptive skills, etc.), they're awfully inciteful and can be helpful in designing specialized instruction programs.

I know this sounds pretty shallow and bad, but I definitely have a high IQ and when I realized at the tail end of high school to play down to whomever I was interested in or make up for their inadequacies, that's when I got laid.  And really confident around the opposite sex.

Although, it goes to show you that I was trying to date down, going after the wrong women and I never had a truly long-lasting, fulfilling relationship.

A full scale standard score of 69 on a measure of cognitive ability places an individual in the extremely low range. However, mental distinguished mentally-challenged is not determined by a mere IQ score, at least, not in Washington state.

For someone to receive services as an individual with mental distinguished mentally-challenged, they need to:

1. Display such a deficit in cognitive ability that their full scale standard score on a standardized measure such as the WJ-II Cog, WISC-IV, WAIS, SB-V is at or below 69.
2. AND demonstrate adaptive, social, and/or academic skill deficits.

So legally, if one were to have an IQ at 68 or below, BUT did not demonstrate skill deficits in their social, adaptive and/or academics, they would not be considered mentally distinguished mentally-challenged.

It's in the top 2% of the general population and enough to get you into Mensa. It is odd that Mensa accepts people who scored over 170 on the LSAT. A score of 170 is in the top 1% of all test takers and only college graduates, generally with high GPA's, take the LSAT.

So..

top 2% of the general population > top 1% of college graduates trying to get into Law School.

Mensa needs to give itself an IQ test.

I was actually in the Eastern magnet program, and Mandark was a year or two ahead of me.  I think what that experience showed me, besides how to get the Montgomery County public school system to almost expel me, was that parents' income is directly tied to their children's intelligence the vast majority of the time.

IQ and income moderately correlate, but which is the cause and which is the effect? A study of siblings raised in the same households showed that siblings with higher IQs had substantially higher incomes in adulthood than their duller siblings. Since they both shared the same SES and family background the income difference was a result of intellectual difference between the siblings. Mind you a recent study out of France showed that parental income of adopted children effected the children's IQ. The researcher's of this study also has access to the IQ's of the biological parents and found that heredity was nonetheless more decisive in determing the childrens IQ.
