Title: Atlus FINALLY abandoning the PS2
Post by: Mr. Gundam on June 04, 2009, 01:47:00 AM
Took 'em long enough.

Quote
Fans of Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei Persona series have been anxiously awaiting a next-gen update to the cult favorite series. That wait might not be too much longer. Today, Atlus told our E3 reporting team that Persona 5 "probably won't be on the PlayStation 2," and will be making the jump to the PlayStation 3 and/or Xbox 360. It's much too soon to talk about release schedules, but just the notion that the game is in development is good enough for me.

The PlayStation 2 versions of the series were highly enjoyable, and if Atlus gives the same love and attention to this next entry, you can be sure they'll have another critical darling on their hands. Be sure to check back later for more on Coop and Sarah's visit with the publisher.

Persona's cool and all, but we need SMT4 first.

Persona is the new hotness with the Japanese kiddies, but I'm sure SMT5 is on it's way.

An HD SMT or Persona would be hot.

Atlus is releasing alot lately.  They must be doing well for themselves with the low initial print strategies.  I don't remember them much from the older gens though.  Did they only gain traction in the ps2 era?

Persona 4 graphics is really weak.

they need to tighten their graphics engine for next gen for real.

I'd say Ps3 would be a safer bet since it's more popular in Japan.

And Atlus games are always Jap oriented.

I hope Atlus is not just as stupid as Square Enix.

A lot of Japanese companies are -blind- or -phobic- to the possibilities of the 360 unless a western publisher forces them to acknowledge its existence. Last month's Famtisuu 360 (single platform version of the main magazine) had a big cover: "THE ROAD TO 1,000,000 UNITS." Like it has finally accomplished something by hitting a million units. Thing is, the stretch from 950,000 to 1,000,000 has taken something like half a year. It's dead here, and the few fans it has here are just as baffled as you are as to why it will not sell.

Anyway, if ATLUS ignores the 360 in favor of PS3 exclusivity with no monetary compensation from Sony for it, they're simply following the "common sense" of the majority in the Japanese dev industry. Also, with the economic downturn, making games which may-or-may-not be sold overseas for a system that has no discernible domestic presence is also flying in the face of common sense. This ignores the fact that preparing / developing in a way which allows for addressing a broader audience overseas is a stronger means of ameliorating risk than trying to retrofit that stuff in after the game is finished for the 5 people who'll play it here in Japan.
