The PS4 will be released on 12/21/2012 to try to beat MS to the punch. In order to create 5D gaming they will power the consoles with mini black holes that will destroy the earth. The mayans were right!

It's always a 10-year plan.  Didn't Sony say the same thing about the PS2 back in 2000?  It's still being supported, but of course we got the PS3 anyway.

As long as MS doesn't abandon the 360 like they did the original Xbox back in 2005 (less than four years after release), it's fine.

no, 360 is old already. So what will the games take up in 2 years? 8 discs? I hate disc swapping.

Unlikely.

It is doubtful that the Xbox 3 will be the first system to be announced.  This time, it will be Sony and the PS4.  Since Sony's finances are basically in the crapper right now, it will be a couple of years yet.

2011 or 2012 still seems likely.

xbox neXt in 2011, calling it now

slightly (and i mean slightly) more powerful, standard hard drive, natal built in

A 10 year 360 plan has nothing to do with them not entering the next-next generation within the next 10 years. The next Xbox will probably be revealed in a couple years or so. Same with the next PS

Although it's kinda odd that Sony is even thinking about losing even more money with new console that might cost $700; hell if it costs $600 again they'll still be fucked. Meanwhile Nintendo will just release a new Wii similar to the Xbox 360 in power and win the next gen once again..

If the 360 makes it 10 years it will be in the same way as the PS1 and PS2.  The twilight years will be filled with discounted shovelware and all the relevant releases will be on the Xbox 720 or whatever it is called.

nintendo will not have a repeat of the wii's wild popularity next generation

think about all the wii systems collecting dust right now in mom and dad closets across the country - they're not going to be so eager to spend $250 replacing something they never use next go around

before the ninfans pile on, i'm not saying that's a good thing, or that they won't do very well

you just probably won't see a lot of oprah and ellen fawning over their next system

the upside is they most likely realize this, and their next game console will be targeted more towards their fan base instead of the casual family market

but the sales dogs can go ahead and stick the gun barrel in their mouths right now

There's no need for new hardware. And with Project Natal, they're probably extending the lifespan of the system even longer, particularly if it is successful.

neXtbox won't be new hardware so much as it will be a repackaging of the 360 and a standardization of components (hard drive, natal, built-in wifi) with a meager bump in power, basically taking the wii route

that's my best guess

Agree with Eel O'Brian. Microsoft seems keen to not let the potential in the casual market fade. Natal, is a great example of how MS is  stepping into the territory.

I have a feeling next gen won't be as graphically advanced as it could have been, had the Wii not discovered the casual mass market.

I think they'll want to push DX11 or DX12 and they're going to be ramping up the hardware a good amount. You're describing Sony IMO.

i think we'll see a lot of games down/upported between current and next gens.  we saw some of this already between PS2/Wii <-> PS3/360 of course, but it's kind of thought of as a shovelware-y practice still.  next gen, I think even a lot of "aaa" games like FF15 or RE6 or whatever will have both PS4/X361 and PS3/X360 versions.

I'm really interested in seeing what the next gen will be.  This E3, Sony just took the strengths of the Wii and improved it using the technology they were sitting on for years.  Microsoft just really tried to go beyond that.  I wonder if someone else will try to go even beyond that.  The next big step would really be how you view the content.  I mean, head and body tracking is still only mapped onto the flat image on the screen.  If you turn your head, you still have to be looking at the screen.  I wonder if anyone would actually attempt to do VR.

I doubt headset-style VR will catch on anytime soon.  it's pretty much 180 degrees away from current trends in UI fashion, at least (toward tech becoming more integrated, or at least seemingly more integrated, with people's lives, not isolated)  true 3D/holographic displays are still a ways out.  tho with consumer robotics likely to become mainstream in 5-7 years or so, maybe we'll get the return of the R.O.B.

Can't wait for E3 2013 where Hirai again goes:

"Available Christmas 2013. Only $599!"

:lol

Sony won't even make the mistake again.  They will be watching costs like a hawk next gen, and if they do take a loss on hardware, it will be minor at the start.

The technology is pretty old, and IIRC the UMD drive was one of the pricier components in the original PSP.  They are probably taking a minimal loss or making a small profit on the Go.

Yes but Wii will have made its impact.  Natal and the Glowing Dildo are signs that the consoles are moving more towards interactivity.  No doubt will XB3 and PS4 have some type of motion based controls and not half assed Sixaxis shit either.

Also given how sluggish sales are for the more expensive machines, I don't expect much in terms of a hardware boost in favor of pricing.  It would dumb to price any new system over $300 unless there is some type of inflation that is going on.  Maybe $349 at most.

The next batch of systems will be 1.5 versions of their predecessors with large hard drives and interactive shit.  I'm calling it now.

If Natal delivers, they easily extended the 360's life to 2015 or even further.

There's also no need for "built-in Natal". I wouldn't want the console sitting right next to the TV, and the target audience wouldn't either. They're going to leave the thing as a small camera that fits under the TV. I can see them bundling Natal with every Xbox 360, but not redesigning the system to make it part of the hardware.

Hold on. If you have all 3 systems and all 3 of their motion shit, wouldn't it be annoying as hell to deal with? Natal cam, Sony Eyetoy, and the Wii sensor bar all need to be on top of or directly in front of your TV, right?

It's an accessory, un-bundled accessories almost never take off to huge numbers. Especially something that will be somewhat costly. Natal won't be owned by a significant amount of the 360 audience unless it becomes bundled with a console.

Another way of saying they won't kill it like they did the original Xbox. One thing about next gen: I hope all my wireless peripherals will still be compatible.

I don't see how Natal or the Glowing Dildo will extend the life of the systems.

If anything, those measures are just to test the waters to see if there is a market alternative to the waggle.  If it is, I expect a full realization of these concepts for the new systems.

2G2D extended this generation by at least 1 year, possibly 2.  The Natal and dildowand are just trojan horses for the next MS and Sony consoles where they will be packed in standard.

Do you think use of the MS and Sony IO peripherals are CPU/RAM limited, though?  If not, why should they depend on new hardware?

No but including them this late into a console's life will limit its potential.  If people seem to like MS and Sony's waggle alternatives, then they could just get built into the new consoles so right away, people have access to this from Day One.
Title: Re: MS: Xbox 360 is a 10-year plan
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on June 08, 2009, 12:27:47 PM
But making them available for current consoles doesn't limit access, it expands it.  This way, people have the option of buying for 360 (if they already have one), or waiting for 361 and buying that (with or without the device built in).  If it's only available packed in with 361, the first option won't exist.

I seriously doubt that. If anything this new found obsession with cameras/motion sensors is going to make the entertainment media pay more attention. I'd bet the next Wii will use similar motion sensing tech, but also include some new gimmick. So it's backwards compatible with the Wii and offers another selling point.

By that time the HDTV market saturation will be good enough to justify their entrance to HD.
