I picked up the Tiger m+ bundle and grand slam tennis today. GST isn't that impressive yet. I feel like the Eurogamer reviewer who can't tell if the m+ is doing anything. But that's because I know next to nothing of tennis shot mechanics. A nunchuck is definitely required because the comp likes to get on the wrong side of the ball every other volley. I think the problem here is that the m+ needs constant calibration based on what I read, so it has to be held still for a moment or use the sensor bar to recalibrate for any game attempting 1:1 tracking. You have to adjust to the fact this is a tennis game and not a game of tennis.
But I didn't spend too long on it, because I really wanted to play Tiger Woods. I've only done the tutorial and 18 holes of disc golf, but it plays wonderfully. Followthrough and applying draw/fade feels natural and you get consistent results. Only took three years! I wanted to like the earlier revisions but they could never deliver the same control fidelity. Now I just want a new wiimote with m+ built in.
Ninthing out!

What exactly does this Motion+ thing do? I don't follow Wii stuff.

gimmicks

It's a $20 attachment that allows the Wii to do what was originally promised in the early promotional videos aka real motion controls and not waggle to perform a canned animation.
-
Yeah I picked up GST and M+ earlier today and was highly dissapointing. It's not 1:1 and it really doesn't seem to be much difference between regular play and M+ play. Oh well. Also graphics suck ass. Looks like a higher textured N64 game. I'm serious. That's not Wii trolling.
Also I think you have to switch the M+ out every time you want to play a non M+ game :/
If you want to play GST though sometime EmCee give me your friend code :teehee
-
I'm still a bit tempted to spring for the new tiger woods.
Don't think I'm going after this one though.

This isn't even an appropriate usage of that smiley.

The standard Wiimote can only detect movement along three strict axises due to limitations of accelerometers, or general orientation. The m+ adds a gyroscope sensor which detects subtle movements and rotations. As long as its calibrated by the sensor bar it can do 1:1 until it loses tracking ( I've read 7-8 seconds). Although from what I gathered it can calibrate itself to the current tilt orientation but then it has to be held still for a second or two.
-
How do you calibrate it? Just leave it on a stand for like 2 seconds?
Also the M+ can detect velocity, or atleast it can in GST.

Just hold it still in your hand. It "catches up" with you so to speak

I have tourretes so I can't keep my hand straight :'(
I plan on playing some GST again in a little bit. I wish I got Tiger :(

I don't see how that makes sense -- for a rigid body there are only three possible axes of rotation (yaw/pitch/roll) so there are no possible "subtle movements and rotations" which 3-axis rotation sensing, in itself, would preclude sensing.

Yeah dude, I'm no expert. I'm paraphrasing badly. All I know is that my golf game works now.

When does the American Wii Sports Resort come out? Wondering if I should get the Japanese one or just import the American one with Tiger Woods...
-
but IGN said GST was GREAT. surely they'd never be wrong?
:teehee
-
Man gst is weiiiird. I'm still stuck on the ball machine. It seems to work best when:
-you hold the wiimote still before swinging
-attempting a "realistic" followthrough, flicking it causes alot of misreads. But then again, maybe I just suck at tennis.
-
Tiger Woods is fantastic. Playing it right now.
-
To put it simply, the Wiimote can tell if you've got motion in your ocean, while M+ can detect the angle in your dangle.
-
No, it just detects if your ocean is a little bit more wavy.
And don't listen to IGN's GST review. Game looks terrible, and it's very...boring looking.
-
Don't believe Mud, he sucks

sounds like a wii game

What? I'm like one of the few people here who is black and knows how to actually play tennis IRL.

Late July for Resort in the US, I think. If M+ isn't really 1:1 it's kind of pointless. :gloomy
-
It might be more 1:1 in WSR and TW, just in GSR it's no wheres close.
-
Uh, yes it is. It's just not complete 1:1 for your actual swing, because if so that would be so fucking incredibly hard. It's 1:1 for the beginning, your serve, etc. Motion+ senses the nuances of your wrist twisting or flicks, where you shoot towards, how hard and fast, etc.
It's much closer to 1:1 than you're letting on. Tiger Woods is just like this, as well. If it were true 1:1, which is possible but devs incorporate a sort of relief, your character would be bugging the fuck out
-
It absolutely is not 1:1 for the serve. You can throw it up in the air, just like in Wii sports, but it'll still hit it if you waggle it even slightly while serving.
-
GST IS NOT 1:1 AT ALL!
Frankly, there's no way it could do it with how m+ is. However, I've played a few matches and after figuring out the control nuances it works. Basically, gst is still a canned waggle gesture game, but as long as you're mindful of incorporating calibration pauses, the gestures work for the different shot types. There is a learning curve here, and I'd say the Nintendo Power 7.5 is what I think of it so far. Plug the nunchuck in and have a steady hand to get better. It's not 1:1 so if you start swinging wildly you'll wind up with crapshoot results. If anything, my one complaint with this game is that the automatic player movement is buggy. I'd prefer to play it like Wii Sports Tennis but the nunchuck has to do until next year.
-
I don't know why you would expect Tiger Woods or Grand Slam Tennis to be 1:1 or fully support Wii Motion Plus when they both were designed for with or without it. Wii Sports Resort and Red Steel 2 are the first two games that will require it.
It's pretty sad that there is an improvement to fix the poor Wii motion control but devs might go half ass like Tiger Woods or GST. The worst is the story about how the team behind Zelda is wondering if it should require Motion Plus or not. Considering that a Wii game bundled with Motion Plus is the same cost as a PS3 or 360 game, I would hope it becomes more common.
-
I really don't see how Tiger Woods at the very least is "half ass." That game was built entirely around Motion+, but you CAN play it without it. But that just defeats the purpose.
Tiger Woods works sooooo so so much better with it, TRUST me. Grand Slam Tennis, I haven't played much with yet.
-
so, it actually works really well? like, it doesn't do what other golf games do where the actual swinging is watching a meter and dealing with peculiar motions? (I have Panya and Wii Love Golf, both are pretty bad). I've only really read up on Grand Slam Tennis and it seems like the Motion Plus additions are about as big as the dual analog additions to early PS1 games (just mapping the d-pad movements to the analog)
The only thing stopping me from picking up Tiger Woods is that I normally don't like real golf games. If there was a Mario Golf, I'd pick it up.
-
Tiger Woods is the real deal. Unfortuneately I found out how much I suck at my swing very fast. What's nice is how you can feel everything out. A 20-50% power shot requires less backswing and a lighter followthrough. A 100% requires a strong clean swing.

It has modes that cover all the bases. It has the All-Play mode, which basically all it needs is like some sort of swing and then registers as the best swing you can get. Then there's standard, which starts to really utilize motion+, calculating the speed, strength, height, and follow-through of your swing, as well as how correct you keep your stance the entire way through. If you tend to slice your shots in real life, chances are you'll slice them most of time in the game (which is what I do, actually, heh.)
And then the advanced mode is even MORE precise than this. Seriously though, golf game of the year (even though there's only been like one). And frolf is amazing :drool
-
You know what, I'm a liar. Generally playing gst is alright, but spending time in the ball machine area proves just how finicky the sensing is. This is trade-in credit until next year if they make top spin/slice controls that are reliable and I dont have a nunchuck cord whipping me in the face. At least Tiger is awesome.
-
I can't under any reason at all get the drop spin to work in GST. Fuck M+, it's a failure.
-
::)
-
Wait, so you waggle like you're serving a tennis ball...while using the nunchuck with the other hand to move your character around?
-
That's not the default method, and honestly from what I've played, definitely not the preferred method. If you keep the nunchuck off, it plays like Wii Sports Tennis basically. But to get your shots, you know, to work, you have to play it like real tennis. You can't be a douche and just stand there and do a simple swipe.
-
What? yes you can. You can do a simple waggle to serve the ball.
-

Without a nunchuck, the player frequently likes to get on the wrong side of the ball and sometimes won't even swing. And I tried every possible way to consistently reenact motions. Yet I can't tell whether going from low to high is going to be interpreted as slice or top spin. Whe
-
Don't worry EmCee, us true tennis aficianados who know the difference between a top spin and a lob know that GST is broken.

.... I think you hold the b button dude...
edit: and lob is a button :p

I'm talking about actually hitting the ball you jackass

I mean the swinging motion dropspin. I know you can hit "B", but you can also *supposedbly* hit the ball downwards producing a shot that hits the court and just swipes forward.
-

And so am I. All you have to do is the throwing motion and sometimes the M+ gets confused and hits the ball while you're tossing it up.
-
then you're playing it wrong
-
No, i'm not purposedbly doing that. I'm just commenting on how lame M+ is.
-
Sh!tbin. It's time.

your trolling for the sake of trolling

No.
I just played GST online and it seems the controls work a little better online than in single player. I don't know why, but they just do. It was alot of fun and quite a work out.
-
Ok Velvet Underground, I must say im sorry to you because GST just clicked and it's totally fun and works now. I am prepared to eat crow.
-
GST is so fucking awesome once it clicks. I'm loving it. It's quite a workout too.
-
:bow mynameisREDEEEMED :bow2
-
WTF, I'm about to trade GST in.
Tell me what you're doing to make it work. Can you consistently do any shot and aim it anywhere? I want to like this game!
-
Ok so I figured out what I was doing wrong. Basically, after every shot you have to recalibrate by holding the wiimote face up and center, I knew this. What I wasn't aware of is that you can pantomime the desired motion as expected for a certain amount of time. I was still trying to do waggle exploits I've been accustomed to for the past 2.5 years. But, there's a prob. How do I do flat shots reliably?
-
you hold the remote with the buttons face up at all times. Thats how you get it to click. Don't twist it or anything, as the side of the wiimote is the face of the racket. So you're swinging the wiimote to the side to hit the ball.
-
You have to recalibrate after each shot? That sounds like it'll get annoying pretty fast.
-
It's not really that annoying, it's just that you have to get in the "ready" position. It's not that bad.
-
its not even calibrating really, all you do is just keep your hand still.
Do I have that right though? Like I keep the wii's buttons face up at all times, because when I swing, the side of the wii mote is actually the face of the racket.
-
yes that is right, and yeah it's a bit odd why that's the "default" position for it.
