Title: Oh great
Post by: Forgotten Ancient on June 22, 2009, 01:45:33 PM
Summer I ends with tomorrow's final which means Summer II begins on Thursday!

With only 3 courses left until graduation, I've been intensely focused on kicking ass en route to a degree.  Things were going smoothly until I discovered my Summer II course, Strategic Business Solutions ( :yuck) is requiring me to read this:

Quote
F. A. Hayek is considered a pioneer in monetary theory, the preeminent proponent of the libertarian philosophy, and the ideological mentor of the Reagan and Thatcher "revolutions."

Whoever thought it was a good idea to have Econometrics offered in a 7 week summer course should be slapped  :'(

Anyways, about Hayek. He believed that it was impossible for a single entity to have all of the knowledge that the individual specialists possessed and are communicated through prices (i.e. efficient market). He concedes that information, even possessed by the individuals, is often contradictory and incomplete, but that prices remain a "best guess" of the intrinsic value.

Tacit knowledge!  Distributed information!  Price signals!  Markets!

What's the prof's name? I have been impressed with how liberal and/or open-minded many of the professors are here, but I've only had economics. I was expecting a department of Friedman-followers, but was pleasantly surprised

*words*
that explains alot. Great school, but that is really the origin of the infallible market axiom starting with Friedman back in the 60s.

Call him ignorant for the lulz and make sure he knows that just because you disagree doesn't mean you are wrong. Interrupt him talking just like he does it to you.

Actually. It looks like your professor and I would make great friends. I believe Global Warming to be a hoax too!

Quote from: Alan Haworth
Such considerations add further support to the conclusion that there are two Hayeks.  One, the modest and imaginative social theorist, has the following piece of good advice to offer: "The market is a delicate mechanism with an important function.  It doesn't always work, and sometimes you do have to adjust and modify its working, but always take care and try to be sure what you're doing when you try" (I paraphrase). [...] The other Hayek is Hayek the libertarian; Hayek the paranoid and splenetic reactionary; the Hayek who fulminates against his pet hates -- "the counter-culture", "permissive education", "dropouts", "parasites" and so on -- like any dyspeptic ten-a-penny rednecked blimp.  This Hayek is unconnected with the former, and should be ignored.

your professor sounds unbelievably horrid.  Is there a liberal David Horowitz you can report him to?

You kidding ?  Summer courses are by far my favorite.  :hyper

I agree. Summer classes are waayyyy better. You might have to study a bit harder, and cram a bit more in a short time. But it's over quick.

I'm going back for sure this fall.
