I just picked up the game from PSN and I'm playing it on the PSP during subway rides. The game still holds up well and I'm having tons of fun. Does anyone else want to come for the ride? I'm currently at the second Mako reactor, fighting the steam robot.
-
If I finish Persona 4 this weekend, I'm in. Might take a little while for me to catch up, though. How much time do you usually spend on the subway?
-
2-3 hours per work day. Game's about 30 to 40 hours without getting all the side stuff.

But I mean... c'mon... you gotta get the side stuff. Gold chocobos and shit...
-
games around 50 hours really, unless you want to be raped by the final boss run
sorry but Ive got too many games I havent played yet to get through.... let alone replay one Ive already beaten 3 times and done all the side shit in.
but yeah FFVII is a sweet ride. Temple of the Ancients ftw
-
I bought this during E3 week and am about 5 hours in or so, playing on PSP also :bow2. I just got to the Shinra building and the endless stair climb
-
I really need to get around to replaying this game one of these days... it's my favorite of the PS1 FF games believe it or not. Amazing atmosphere and setting, great music, interesting (at the time) story. It's just a bit too easy.
-
Best game ever.

the final boss run isn't hard unless you run from, like, every battle. ff7 is too unbalanced for me to take seriously as a game. i had to impose arbitrary restrictions on myself, like only one person in a party was allowed to have healing materia, for it to be quasi-challenging enough to be fun. admittedly the last boss was kinda cool when I beat him with levels somewhere in the mid-forties iirc.
but i have to agree with Jeremy Parish (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8993904&publicUserId=5379721) that the real appeal of ff7 lies in all the weird moments and touches sprinkled throughout the story and game. still not enough to save it for me though.

My first time through the game I think my final time was like 32 hours or something, and I beat the ever-loving snot out of the last boss. I didn't even have the Summon-this-to-win Materia.
I beat it around 36 hours first time through. Game is easy for FF standards.

:bow tennin tells it like it is
final fantasies are never all that hard barring a fight optinal fights, but 7 is just a joke. last time i played the game i only used double and triple growth rate armor and weapons, which means i upgraded my equipment like three or four times throughout the entire game, and it was STILL piss easy. it's just not fun where you really can just hold down the x button and win every fight. also the translation is near incomprehensible and was subpar even back in the day, so what you're left with is shit gameplay plus shit story scenes equals shit outdated game
-
I bought FF7 off of ebay a few years back and the discs all came scratched up. They started off playing just fine so I thought nothing of it. But then I got to this part where you have to escape on a motorcycle and it freezes up every time. I know it isn't the game's fault, but I'm still soured on the whole experience.
-
There are some places around that do disc-resurfacing fairly cheap. My copy of Star Ocean 2 got majorly scratched up and after a resurfacing it worked like new.
-
It's been awhile and I don't remember where to find the keys going up the Shinra building. Anyone know?
-
You can find them on every floor of that building. Usually requires some sort of puzzle but the first one is obvious.
-
I figured it out. I was stuck on the part with model of the city and missing parts. thanks
-
Fuck a remake, I want a new translation.
-
This reminds me there's a few games in the series I've yet to complete. I got almost all the way through V, got distracted by who knows what and didn't get back to it. Couldn't get into VIII. Haven't tried VI and IX yet.
For my money, I say X is the best of what I've played.
-
6 & 9 are both great; shame you couldn't get into 8
-
Scenester NUB confirmed. To be fair FFVII was the first RPG I had ever played and I was 12. It probably took me a little longer than PAR time to get through it as I wasnt used to a game with that much depth and gameplay options. I was used to shit like Wipeout and Crash Bandicoot

qft, and X is dogshit fyi

I never played VI, but what I played of IX was great and what I played of X was shit.
-
FFIX for the win. I seriously go back and play through it at least once a year.
-
FFVIII is awful. Who likes that game? Hasn't been a good FF since IX.

Final Fantasy X-2 :rock
-
When will people realize FFVII wasn't that good? Guess we have to wait a few more years for some
-
FF7 is good, but overrated.
FF8 is good, overrated by some, underrated by others
FF9 is perfect
FF10 is very good
FF10-2 is vastly underrated by the large amount of people who never played an rpg before ff 10
FF12 is the biggest piece of dog shit I have ever encountered(under the guise of a FF game).
Here's to hoping 13 doesn't suck a donkey's penis.
IX > X > 8 > X-2 > 7 > michael jackson's moonwalker > 12
-
ff8 is my favorite
FF8 > FF6 > FF5 > FFT > FFX-2 > FFIV remake > FFXII last third > FFIV > FFX > FFIX > FFVII > FFIII > FFXII first and second third > FFI > FFII
-
4 = 5 > 6 > others
-
Yay for dumb rankings!
VI > IV > X > IX > V > VII > VIII > III > I > XII > II
Never played XI. Never wanted to.
-
I've been dicking around with FF7 off and on since they put it out on PSN a few weeks ago. I haven't played it in like 12 years but it's kind of surprising how much I'm remembering as I go through it. The Golden Saucer bit in particular brought back a bunch of memories about all the fucking time I wasted in racing Chocobos. Ugh. The story is still all kinds of dumb but I'm more or less expecting it to be this bad this time around so it's not bothering me as much as it did back then. I agree that it's pretty damn easy for a FF game though, something that I never really noticed until now, but I'm cool with that since I'm just casually going through it.
Best FF game for me is still FF9. :-* It's the only one that I've bothered to go back multiple times to and still have a good time doing it.
ff8 is my favorite
FF8 > FF6 > FF5 > FFT > FFX-2 > FFIV remake > FFXII last third > FFIV > FFX > FFIX > FFVII > FFIII > FFXII first and second third > FFI > FFII
smh
IMO, the best (and only) good part of FFXII was the first 1/3 or so of the game. Infact until I got to the sand sea I thought that FFXII was one of the best FF games I ever played but then it just fell apart and limped and crawled to one of the more disappointing, unsatisfying endings I've ever experienced in a game. There's a great game in there to be sure but it felt like they ran out of money or ideas about half way through and rushed it to get it out to market. It was a a book that had every other chapter ripped out of it. If there was ever a FF game that deserves a proper remake or "directors cut" it's FFXII.
-
How the fuck is X better than VII, VIII or IX
I want one of you pricks to argue the merits of FFX immediately
-
FF8 am best FF ever.
FF7 is over hyped garbage.
I hope you're kidding with that cause calling FF7 'garbage' is beyond ridiculous.

I really wanted to like FFXII in its first and second third. I saw some great ideas, but not a lot of it was carried out in the best manner. I'm talking about the gameplay btw.
But in the last third, you see a lot of character development increase: Cid and his relationship with Balthier, Ashe coming to terms with destroying the dawn shard and being tricked by the gods with the vision of her former lover, Vayne and his relationship with his brother...it was just so much more interesting than the rest of the game for me.
Gameplay wise, this is where the gameplay really starts to shine. Around the last third of the game you start getting into higher levels, allowing you to take on more challenging hunts, and the hunts you fight are some of the best boss fights in the series.
The dungeons start to really open up and take on interesting turns, the pharos dungeon was a REALLY good dungeon I felt and worthy of the game's true final dungeon.
I see a lot of people hate on the last third of FFXII, but I honestly felt it was the MIDDLE part of the game which suffered the most, and you could tell. There was a complete absence of story and interesting dungoens or locations in this portion of the game; it was go here-go there-go here repeatedly.
But the last third was something that actually felt like a Final Fantasy.
I agree the ending sucks dick, but man. Those dungeons, those boss fights, those hunts. I couldn't hate the game after that.

:bow
Seriously. I love the last third of FFXII. If the rest of the game were like that, I would have LOVED the game and it would be top 5 FF easily.

+ arena
+ sphere grid
I dunno
I guess on my ranking I shouldn't have said > but =
X = VII = IX
-
FF5
FF4
FF3
FF7
FF6
FF1
FF9
FF10
FFMQ
FF12
FF8
FF2
FFX2
for me...
-
If there were an FF12 "special edition" I'd really want the soundtrack to be fully orchestrated by Hayato Matsuo. FF12 has one of the richest and most sophisticated scores I've ever heard in a game but it's let down by the weak synth orchestration.

High five, my nicca.
I love me some FFX. Plus the battle system is fast and fun.
-
ff8 is utter garbage.
-
FF10 used to be higher on my list but like, dude, last time I played I really had to bring that sucker down. Same for FF7 and 9.
-
FF8 is the best overall FF game - with great battle system (Drawing + Junctioning = :hyper) and the best story (FF... in SPACE!)
Hell yea nicca.

Back on topic. I'm definitely having fun with FFVII, but I think I should try a no materia or low challenge, coming off FFV, FFVII seems like a cakewalk.
-
what does the "All" materia do? I am at the part where Cloud disguises himself as a SOLDIER member and boards the ship
This game is really easy, but I think that the story and presentation still hold up reasonably well today, considering how old the game is
-
from memory, you put it in a linked slot and makes the materia hit all enemies instead of just one
so fire+all= fire hits all
-
that would make sense. thanks mang

No materia sounds really tedious. Try making a rule that only one copy of each materia type is allowed in your party (so only one person at a time gets healing materia, etc.) That combined with keeping your levels low should make the game a bit more challenging while still letting you have fun with the system. Most "super-challenges" end up being about luck/patience and exploiting whatever few broken bits were left out of the super-challenge rules.
