Title: I'm buying a new laptop! Help me!

I haven't purchased a laptop in like 6 years. I'm a get a new one. It doesn't have to be super portable, btu I'd like to be able to like keep it on a desk when gaming and move it to the couch when chilling out. It doesn't need to run Crysis, but I'd like to be able to play like Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead, probably a lot of older stuff. I like to have like 64783634863478 tabs open, a Netbook is a no-go.

So- Medium gaming power, mid range portability, heftier than a netbook.

prole and i discussed that very model on a past borecast

i own the G50VT-X5, it is great, runs fallout 3 at ultra settings, COD5 at max, L4D at max, crysis and crysis warhead on medium (turn down shadows)

i don't know if you'd ever want to do it, but the processor and vidcard are upgradeable

it's garishly ugly, that's about my only problem with it - also, don't make the mistake of buying a 15" carrying case/bag, it's bigger than normal 15" laptops, you're gonna have to get a "17 case/bag

that's $50 cheaper than when i bought it, too

basically, you are not going to find a better gaming laptop for that price

that's not a significant processor leap, anyhow. i believe that model has a higher-res screen, but that just means that ol' gpu will hafta work harder to pump them pixels at the native res in games.

edit: oh wait, it has the same 1366x768 res. it's not worth the extra $250.

Damn, I thought I was done buying laptops, but that Asus looks like an amazing deal for the price.  Might just get that instead of a desktop.

there's minute differences between the x-1 and the x-5, but they're about the same across the board

prole's looks cooler, all blue lightning and stuff

mine looks like someone threw up in a hot topic

you'll be happy with the x-5 overall, i think - it has a 9-cell battery, so if you're not gaming you get a good three hours or so usage out of it

i wouldn't go for the latest model, the G51VX-RX05

while it sounds nice, they've apparently started locking out driver updates and requiring you to get everything off their site, which is bullshit

they also downclocked the GTX 260M gpu, which pretty much makes it no better than the 9800M GS prole and i are sporting in our laptops...kinda pointless to include a better card if you're just gonna gimp it
