Title: FAMILY STRIFE 2010: SIBILING JOINS ARMED FORCES EDITION
Post by: The Fake Shemp on July 06, 2009, 08:55:51 PM
My brother is getting his medical history together so he can join the Marines, unbeknownst to my mother - who thinks he's going back to school next semester.  Instead, he'll be in boot camp, training to bunk with rodi and fight for Iraqi Afghani freedom.

To be fair, I think this is probably a good move.  He is better suited for a military career.  He has the personality makeup for it, along with with a respect and fondness for firearms, military strategy, etc.

The fallout at home will be nothing short of epic, though.  I am pretty sure to catch some heat for knowing well ahead of time, as well.

Will this move by your brother help you in your quest to become the favorite Federman son?

Negatory.

My brother and I only have the same mother.  He is removed from the Federman side.

My sister is still going through with a medical career and a free ride at Ivy League.  She wins.

Good christ. At least he's not likely to be deployed on some cowboy mission in a preemptive strike under the current administration.

A -lot- of my relatives are right-wing jingoists who were for Iraq (both times) and don't know what to do for their own careers. I wish they'd sign up, put their money where their mouth is. If the invasion is worth putting American lives on the line, start with your own. Otherwise, you know, use some diplomacy and sanctions and cooperate with other major powers in bringing justice and order.

Whoa, hey. Started my own rant there. Sorry. I hope your brother gets what he wants out of the experience. Hopefully it will not fall out too badly on you.

Is your mom paying some of the tuition and he's just not going to tell her he's not going to school next semester?

Either way man, I wish your brother luck. :lol

Did he say what job he's interested in doing? I don't know much about Marine Corps recruitment through ASVAB.

He pays his own tuition, but he gets other perks (free cell phone, free health insurance, etc.) from living at home and my mother is far more liberal in letting him do what he wants than his father.

He's doing this because he feels after going to school for a year, working various jobs and researching his options, that the armed forces is where he wants to go to.

I actually went golfing with my mom today and he rang me, and she started to ask why my brother was calling me (he is not a cell phone guy).  I totally lied.  I will be reamed.

Kind of.  I'm involved in a few projects, hopefully a few will pan out.

I have a couple of friends that are shooting a "pilot" of sorts in Los Angeles in a week and a half - the cast and crew are all set, but there is one role left they are trying to fill with a name actor.  They have A, B and (a surefire) C option.  If A or B are landed, I will let you guys know.  I just did some minor script tweaking for the "pilot" script, but if it gets picked up, I have at least one episode (of sorts) that will be entirely mine.  It's the most professional production I've ever been involved in, but the city of Los Angeles has been dicking them around in costs, so it's unanimous that they will not be shooting there if this thing is picked up.

I also wrote a short, which I think will play well to guys like you, and asked another industry pal to come out to the D.C. area to shoot and direct it.  He likes the concept, but bringing out his gear and taking time off of shooting commercials is a costly endeavor, so there's a handshake agreement that I am not happy with.  He will direct and produce my short on the condition that I take an on-camera role for a film he's shooting this fall.

I will probably agree to it just so I can have him shoot what I want to shoot, but I'm not an actor.  The concensus is that since the character is a fat, sarcastic (somewhat boisterous) manager of a "Pizza Shack", that I am perfect for him.  If that doesn't cement as Jonah Hill, though, I don't know what will. :(

Very cool. That beats my getting past two rounds of casting for the new "Ghost Hunters" spin-off, which was going swimmingly until the casting director found out I'm 36. :'(

Yeah, I applied on a lark, not expecting anything of it. Then I got an email, followed by two phone calls (the last in which was the casting director to whom I revealed my age) and that was it. I'll never forget the distinct pause after I mentioned my age.

Would have been nice getting paid to run around in the dark though.

Oh yeah. One of my pet passions, along with music. Just got blindsided with a family business along the way.

And yeah, Ghosthunters is hardly A+, but it sure would have been interesting. I'm a bit sceptical of them as it is.

If you ever need an extra for the "Bore Movie", I'm your man.

I will never, ever make a movie related to The Bore.  I'm a writer and collaborator anyway, not a director or producer.  I have friends that are both.  If I have a project that I can tap you for, I'll let you know.

Well, not quite. There's going to be a spinoff called Ghost Hunters: The New Generation or Haunting 101 or something to that effect, that two of the younger guys from GH are getting (Steve and Tango). They wanted people who've never done that sort of thing before to send in applications with photos. I heard about it, and sent one in for the hell of it.

An email and two phone calls later, and I haven't heard back. Apparently they weren't sure if they were just going to cast a range of people from all walks and ages, or if they were going to focus on getting a group of college kids.

So either they went with the kids, or I'm too handsome for ghost hunting.  :tophat

Damn willco I didnt know you were into the movie biz. That's very cool.

I'd kill to get into any movie, after being in the credits of a game this is my new secret mission. Ofcourse achieving this in the Netherlands is impossible.

I honestly struggled to do anything in Hollywood when I first lived in Los Angeles and when I left, I think I left with the idea that I was pretty much done.  But over the years, some of the friends I've made have persisted in their film and television endeavors, and now some of their concepts are coming to fruition.  Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in.

That's not to say that I'm doing anything important.  This "pilot" of sorts may never get picked up.  The current draft of my buddy's indie flick is the opposite of compelling - and I'd settle for Diablo Cody here.

I'd ask if I had to audition, but I'll assume the "casting couch" will be part of the $3000.

Or wait. Am I paying you the $3000?
