Title: PC gaming thread
Post by: Himu on July 16, 2009, 06:43:12 AM
Ordered an Asus REPUBLIC OF GAMERS laptop this afternoon after work.

My time has finally come.

But I don't know what games to get. I've been out of the loop, pc wise for almost 10 years.

Here's my list so far and I'm talking about absolute essentials here.

- Warcraft 3 battlechest
- Titan Quest
- Civilization IV
- Sim City 4000
- NWN2 + expansion
- Crysis

Any Steam games that require investigating?

There's smaller stuff like Still Life 2 but I can get those later.

Finally, about the Asus itself. I can imagine it getting damn hot so putting it on my lap is a no go. But how hot is it with a cooling fan under it? Still too hot for the lap?

Dawn of War II-The singleplayer is an RTS/RPG hybrid and the multiplayer is the most accessible RTS I've played, but there is still plenty of depth

Also, you might want to check out Freedom Force on steam. Its a semi-turn-based RPG about the golden age of comics and its only like $7 for two full games

Crysis is a good choice Himu. I wouldn't bother with the expansion though

Really can't wait. I'll finally be able to play pc games at max setting. I won't have to watch all streamed videos in sd because my computer chugs at the sight of hd videos. I'll be able to handle hd resolution videos that are downloaded to my computer.

This is going to be amazing. I just have to delete Vista once I get it and install XP.

Nope, same here. I've played through all of WC3 and expac, plus Diablo II multiple times, but I can't really get into SC.

I also forgot to recommend the Witcher

I really hope SC2 changes my tune but I really doubt it. I mean, the videos I've seen scream Starcraft 1.5 and I don't even like the original so why bother.

On the contrary.

I prefer sci fi over fantasy.

But Warcraft's lore is far more interesting to me. Plus, for some reason I like the gameplay more particularly in 3.

You're not going to be able to play crysis at high settings, that game still takes a hefty rig to run at high or max

You can run it at full medium, or play with the high settings and lower a few things like shadows, it's still beautiful

Here's a few current games I've played or tested on my Asus G50VT-X5 (the model right before yours):

Fallout 3 (Ultra settings)
COD: World at War (maxed, with body count turned to small)
Ghostbusters (maxed)
Left 4 Dead (maxed)
C&C RA3 (maxed)
Far Cry 2 (had to go medium here)
Crysis Warhead (medium)

Given the resolution of the screen, you are pretty much going to be able to run almost any game made before 2007 at maximum settings.

Some games just aren't optimized well, though, and are gonna run kind of crappy no matter what.  For instance, Prototype (which looks like a 360 launch game even at max) ran like shit until I turned a bunch of settings way down.  That's not my rig, that's poor optimization on their part.

The good thing is, with PC devs targetting console specs for the forseeable future and console companies wanting to extend the lifetime of the current generation, your laptop should have a much longer gaming lifespan than usual.  I doubt we're going to see very many games with monster spec requirements like Crysis in the next couple of years (although you'll get one occasionally).

Also, a lot of games recognize and map to a 360 controller when you plug it in, so you'll get the bonus of playing with a controller and having a better-looking game at the same time.

If you plan on getting Civ IV, I would just get the complete edition. It includes the original game, the two expansion packs, and the Colonization game that just came out last year. I think its only $40 for the entire package

or you can be like me and rage buy only Civ4 after missing out on the 2K special deal and raging even more after you realize your second mistake of not buying the full Civ4 bundle for $20 more.

and if you haven't played PC games for the past 10 years, there are a ton of games to get and I don't even know where to start.  Most current recommendations would be for consoles games that are better on PC.

ok, looking on my shelf the only two games in the OP are STALKER, the Clear Sky expansion and The Witcher.  My older PC games are in my closet and I'll go through that later.  I still recommend playing console games you may have missed on PC since they're a lot better there, like Max Payne 2.

Himu, check out King's Bounty. It's got a lot of things I think you'll dig-deep turn-based combat, in-depth character development, a fun story, and lots of really great RPG gameplay.

Audiosurf and Mount and Blade are both highly recommended by myself as well.

Thanks for the list guys. Was hoping there'd be more games in the vein of Deus Ex that you'd recommend but it seems aside that, riddick, and bioshock there aren't that many type of fps this decade. It's still my favorite breed of fps.

Also, what adventure games? I asked about Still Life 2 earlier, I guess I could get Dreamfall.

To all the people that didnt like SC, did you play it when it came out?

Naw.

what exactly do you like about Deux Ex if you consider Riddick and Bioshock to be in the same breed? I'm sure if those two fit in with Deux Ex, there are a lot more out there.

Desu Ex is awful, easily an example of PC distinguished mentally-challenged fellows inflating to extremes and I'm glad no other games are like it

Post by: Great Rumbler on July 18, 2009, 08:56:37 PM
System Shock 2 is really the only FPS I know that's all that similar to Deus Ex, although it has an emphasis on nervous tension and claustrophobia that Deus Ex doesn't have.
Title: Re: Joining the Republic of Gamers, the PC gaming Ssquad
Post by: Himu on July 18, 2009, 09:32:05 PM
I mean with genre hybrid gameptlay. Riddick and Bioshock, although not just like SS and DE blend multiple genres - like them - to form a product that it is far more interesting to me than the typical first person game.

Anyways, in regards to pc games I've got...uhhh.

I've only really dabbled with 2000's era pc gaming. Of course I've played the Counter Strikes, I've got KOTOR, Still Life, mostly mmo's like Dark Ages of Camelot, FF11, WoW..

I kinda want to go back and play Oblivion again with all the mods.

the gaf thread had some good ones that improved graphics, fix the hud (including the map), removes gates/loading when you enter the town and other things.  The only gameplay fix I saw was getting rid of the "enemies level with you" bullshit.  I'm hoping there are more that don't break the game.  I saw one that gave you a flying mount, which just seems pretty lame.

I got it.

It's really great so far, but there's a bunch of crap pre-installed, as expected, but I didn't expect this much.

So far, about the computer itself....the only problem I have with the design (which is REALLY fucking badass, I love how top of it GLOWS) is the left and right buttons. They're shit and don't feel as if they register well. Thankfully I got myself a wireless mouse along with it.

But I must say...this computer is a beast. I can load a page on EB in 1 second. I've never used a computer this fast and I can't believe it's mine.

Been testing out demos to games I've been wanting to play for YEARS.

TITAN QUEST

From the demo this is a Diablo clone from head to toe and I wouldn't want it it any other way, because although I really love Diablo 2 it could REALLY use a graphic update. I'm usually not vain like that, but fuck. This will tide me over till Diablo 3. :rock

Even though it's a really good Diablo clone it still doesn't compare. Like, I'm level 5 in the demo and I've killed 9999 enemies but not one has blown up into a pile of hamburger.

Diablo 3 needs to come out NOW. But overall, it helps the game takes place in Greece. Greek architecture/lore/history is awesome so I'm able to get my mythology boner on while playing this, which is a bonus.

Look at this manly brute. He's ready to rape all who oppose him, even men!

One of the disappointing things about this game's demo so far, aside from the fact enemies don't get blown up into chunks when I use certain skills, is the loot. In Diablo 2 you get 9999 loot at the beginning of the game, but in this I continue to get boring shit. Is this indicative of the real game? I do like how they ripped Diablo's inventory system like, I mean, they ripped it. It looks EXACTLY THE SAME. So does the damn shop windows and stuff. Damn. When THQ went to make a DIablo clone they really did it.

Titan Quest only has a T rating, so that's not going to happen no matter how high your level is.

I never played the demo, but I always felt like there were a lot of cool, high-level items in the full game. Make sure you search every little corner of the world and do all the side quests.

How is SimCity 4?

It's pretty much the last great city-builder. City Life was okay once they get it all patched up and expanded and Simcity Societies was the same way, but they're both on the easy/simplistic side and neither can hold a candle to Simcity 2000 and 4.

worst part about Titan Quest is that there aren't multi-tiered dungeons.  Same with Sacred 2 (as far as I could tell with about 20% of the map complete.)  I missed that "oh fuck, I might be going too deep into this cave and the thing at the bottom will probably kick the fucking shit out of me" feeling that I used to get from Diablo.

It's a very awesome RPG that never got its due because of being buggy, having some janky combat, iffy-animation [especially in the games few real-time cutscenes], and a final act that completely falls apart. The latest fan patch mostly fix the bugs and some of the animation, but there's not much than can be done about the combat or the final act. Nevertheless, it is well worth playing, even at $20.

The Steam version is 1.2 which is the last official patch. From there, you can download one of two Unofficial patches, one which aims only to fix all the bugs, or the other which not only fixes bugs but also adds in features that got axed from the final version and adds a lot of other tweaks and enhancements to the gameplay (although sometimes they end up adding new bugs in the process). I went with the later patch during my last playthrough, although the next time I play it I plan to try the other one.

The most recent releases of each unofficial patch can be found here: http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/bloodlines_tech_support/b50391/p1

Damn. When THQ went to make a DIablo clone they really did it.

you better have the expansion installed, IT IS NECESSARY

like diablo 2, titan quest is merely mediocre without its expansion

Anyone got any good pc turn based strategy game suggestions?

I got Civ IV and the expansion a long time ago but that's about the only one I got.

It seems real time strategy is much more popular, and no offense to rts', but it's definitely not my preference (although I tried the Company of Heroes demo and was pretty impressed with how streamlined it was without sacrificing strategic depth).

DoWII is a very streamlined RTS without sacrificing depth. There is essentially no base building, and the campaign is more RPG than RTS.

King's Bounty is a turn based strategy RPG that everyone here seems to love.

Camo actually works?

Yeah I don't see the benefit of strength. When you jump you're totally exposed because you're in the air for like 5 seconds.
Title: Re: Joining the Republic of Gamers, the PC gaming Ssquad
Post by: cool breeze on August 06, 2009, 11:55:52 AM
the trick is that you actively need to be switching if you want to play all aggro and shit.  So, use speed to get up close, switch to strength, grab and throw a guy, switch to armor and get behind cover, switch to stealth as the enemy runs after you, back to strength and throw him, etc.  The reason why Crysis is so awesome is because they give you so many ways you can approach a situation.  You can even just drive a car into the base, get on the turret and blast them all away.  Or sit way away from the base and snipe everyone using tranq darts.  Or pick up a chicken and throw it at the enemy until they die.

Very well, actually, but you need to be patient when you use it. You've got to creep through the bushes, hide in shadows, and make sure that you well hidden when you have to wait for it to recharge.

Vampire Bloodline is pretty awesome.  Kinda reminds me of Fallout 3 and Riddick, if that makes sense.  I picked a T-something vampire who is an introverted genius or something, but a wuss at combat.  Doesn't keep me from beating down the chinese vampire using a severed arm  :gun

and this game gives me nostalgia for back when physics was the new hot shit in games.  Boobs are bouncing all over the place.

how different is the game if you play as one of those lanky bat creatures? some places have alternate entrances that seem built only to stay hidden., but ultimately don't make since the front door is never locked.

It's a lot harder. You can't even be SEEN by normal people or it's a Masquerade violation. You've got to use lots of stealth and the sewer system to navigate the city.

Make sure you have an updated version of directx/C++ runtimes. There's some goofiness with the EU3 releases from steam if you don't have the latest runtimes.

intro turn-based strategy games for the common man:

civ4 , with or without expansions, it's awesome
king's bounty
Heroes of Might and Magic V
Disciples II
X-COM: UFO Defense
Jagged Alliance 2

Pretty sure those are all on Steam too.

Sins is one of those games that takes a while to sink in. My advice is to play it, make some mistakes, and after the game see what all those buttons you were pushing actually do! The point is that a lot of people see these kind of games and run away at the learning curve, when they really are designed to let you play around will all the knobs and eventually you figure out which button does exactly what you want.

Documentation in the manual is good, btw. I think Amazon has the game for $20.
Title: Re: PC gaming thread

Sins does take a few tries to get a feel for how everything works, the thing I can't get over is the length of the games. I have never finished a skirmish against the CPU despite having played for several hours.

If you're going to use a gamepad, use the Xbox 360 controller. But honestly, Keyboard + Mouse works pretty good for TLR once you tweak a few options. First you need to change it so that on-screen prompts are for K+M instead of Xbox 360 controller, which is the default. Then you need to change the camera mouse controls to Free Look instead of the default with is left-click to look. Once you've done that, you can play it with WASD to move and the mouse to look, just like any other PC action/adventure game. You can scroll through menus with WASD also (or even scroll up and down with the mouse wheel) and use a Left-Click to confirm and Right-Click to cancel.

yeah, the dialogue and writing in Bloodlines seems a lot better than the Bethesda (and Bioware) games.  I'm picking the more snarky responses just to hear how they would react.  In general the game seems to have a lot more focus on characters rather than the world.  Bethesda games are pretty much the opposite of that, and I always really liked exploring vast worlds, but in Bloodlines the smaller things are more interesting.  I mean, I went back to older areas to check up on certain characters when there was no mission needing me to.

and hopefully Hiimuro gets the game working on his computer.

would prefer it if bloodlines wasn't first person but then it didn't hinder fallout

Having done it as third-person from the beginning definitely would have given it better combat.

the third-person camera is surprisingly good if you compare it to Fallout or Oblivion.  It's almost the same way The Specialist mod handle a third-person camera.

combat isn't that bad.  Melee and vampire magic stuff is fine; the guns are terrible.  It's the worst realization of guns + rpg I've played in a while.

Nah, just use godmode. :lol The endgame is so ridiculous, there's like a billion monsters that you have to fight. Spent the whole game working on your stealth? Too bad! Then they decided they didnt like the tone of a certain scene, or had to cater to the publisher or a certain ethnic group and changed it up a bit. And then they released KOTOR2 the end

I can't get into Sins - it seems to have a ridiculously steep learning curve, and the bland tutorial offered in the demo doesn't help. I have yet to try out the King's Bounty demo, I was liking Company of Heroes demo until they introduced bases (was hoping for an rts that didn't rely on resources or base building but...nope!  :yuck :yuck :yuck) but Civ IV is making my pants wet every time I boot it up.

Why can't I play more pc strategy games like Civ?   :'( It has this certain formula that makes me adore it. Maybe I should just reinstall Warcraft 3.

Never played the Anno games, but those are supposed to be similar to Civ.

It's a fun game, I played it quite a bit after I picked it up a year or so ago. My one main complaint is that once your islands start to become more developed, the game becomes a never-ending cycle of need fulfillment. Still, it's worth playing if you can find it cheap.
