Title: Help me replay Fallout 3!
Post by: The Fake Shemp on July 17, 2009, 02:55:32 AM
I bought all the expansions except Point Lookout (waiting to level up to tackle that on account of the difficulty, apparently) and I just got to Megaton.  What's the easiest quest to compelete off the bat?

Probably the Survival Guide. Even if you don't do the actual quest, you can always just (a) lie and tell you did it even though you didn't or (b) tell her that her book is bad and she should feel bad. You can net some quick experience that way.

First thing you should do is patch the water pipes, you need a repair skill of 35 but the scrap metal offer really adds up over time.

I think that you might also want to immediately go to Lucy West to deliver her letter to Arefu and begin the vampire quest so that you can get the Hematophage perk because hey drinking blood is super convenient.

You can also deal with the bomb in the center.  Can just blow it up with no skill requirements, but it takes 25 explosives skill to disarm.

Or hell, I'd just explore more personally.

btw the best sniper rifle is in region 4,4 on the map grid thingymajig.  It's fucking buff but it requires .308 ammo.  Also, the butthole who has it is on the second inaccessible floor of the chapel shooting out from the patio sort of thing and so you need to somehow blow off a chunk of him to the ground to search his corpse.  The best ways are with the Bloody Mess perk or of with some explosives.

The best gun to get right now however is Ol' Painless way in the top right corner in the republic of dave.  It uses .32 ammo and can be repaired by hunting rifles since it's essentially just a hunting rifle with more balls.  The best thing about it is that it's really easy to maintain and find ammo for.

You'll need a automatic or a shotgun for close range though.  I carry the Terrible Shotgun which you can get in the very well armed raider stronghold way to the west of Megaton.  A LOT of loot is there.

Yep, clean out Megaton, do the Super Duper Mart then the stuff above like Arefu.

I didn't hit DC until I was level 8 or so.

Agreed with the scrap metal/fixing the pipes quest... got a LOT of exp that way, especially in the early stages of the game. The megaton quests are probably the best way to start out the game though.

oh yeah the scrap metal, best quest in the game :shh

Personally, I'd head straight for Rivet City.  Get A3-21's Plasma Rifle from Captain (John) Harkness through the "The Replicated Man" quest.  Once you get to the part where there's lots of Enclave guys, you pretty much don't run out of ammo, and the crit rate is INSAAANE.  Also, if you want a bitchin amazing gun to dick around with for about 100 ammo, go get the Alien Blaster... lol.  It's actually stupid easy to find, and easily the best gun in the game, just with little ammo.  I think it's North of Megaton. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_blaster

So if I want to disarm the bomb I'm screwed and I can't patch the water with the little repair I have?

Mentats can comp the difference between your skill and the 25 needed for defusal

It really is absurdly easy to repair that particular bomb as opposed to repairing other things or simply maintaining a rifle.

It's a gamist conceit based solely on the fact that you encounter Megaton early.

Maybe not. A nuke involves a lot of high science, but once it's assembled the actual mechanism to set off the reaction is pretty A+B=C. Where as maintaining a rifle might involve a lot moving parts, rusted parts. It's being used etc.

I'm not going to get into some GAME NERD debate about it, but provided the player character has a modicum of knowledge about mechanical devices or a nuke, it might not be that crazy to image he could disarm it.

I just did the Super Duper Mart quest - I never did that in my first playthrough (I sped through and beat it in 16 hours).  I totally forgot how awesome this game is.

I strongly suggest getting the Alien Blaster now if you're at a low level.  There aren't many strong baddies up there when you're lower, maybe a radscorp or two, but no Deathclaws yet.  Fairly quick trip, and best weapon for those just in case you gotta shoot your way out of unbeatable odds situations.

I did this as like my first quest. I had 7 bullets or something. I took me like two hours  :lol

At level ten on 360, I got a glitch with the Animal Friend perk that gave me both ranks of the perk the first time, animal's not only didn't attack me but attacked any hostiles.

You should also go for Impartial Mediation and Comprehension.  Those will pay off in the long run.

It's probably some Lincoln shit.  I remember he bought a poster from there.

Someone told me there was a gun in the Lincoln Memorial, but all I found were slavers and I smited them all like the Right Hand of God that I am.  Is it anywhere to be found?

Also, I started the Reilly's Rangers quest and am trying to travel to the compound, but getting raped by Super Mutants.  Is there an easier way to get there?
Title: Re: Help me replay Fallout 3!

There's a good gun in the museum of history called Lincoln's Repeater.  The memorial had only one room on the interior I think but I don't remember any loot.

For Reilly's quest, you have to first go to up a few floors in a hospital near the hotel and then cross over to the hotel by a bridge.  Getting to the hospital is a bit tricky as there's a few ghouls and mutants but once you're in the hospital you should be safe.  There's like 20 mutants to kill through both of those buildings but like every room in the hospital had a medkit so if you fall back on those and bathroom sinks, you shouldn't have a problem.  I thought it was one of the easiest missions actually and had a net gain of like 30 stim packs when I finished.

Beat Riley's Rangers and started The Replicated Man (never played either of these quests my first playthrough).  I'm going to start Operation: Anchorage right now and see if that's any good.  It appears to me that I didn't do much of anything my first run through the game.

On my replaythroughs, the first thing I try to grab is that old unique rifle in the "Republic of Dan" or "Dave" area.

Replicated Man is actually a cool quest to follow if its your first time.

I invested in repair and it's paid off.  I am spending far less caps in this playthrough than when I initially played.

... How do you get to Republic of Dave?
Title: Re: Help me replay Fallout 3!

The Republic of Dave is in the northeast corner of the map I think.

I'm replaying the game as well on the 360 because I'm impatient and want to play the DLC NOW.

As Bloodwake said, its as North East you can go on the map. Its in a safe so you'll either have to pick the lock or steal the key from Dave himself.

It's funner to rig the election.

1. Convince Rosie or Bob to run for president.  They'll cast the only vote for themselves while everybody else will vote for Dave.
2. Once the votes are in, activate a stealthboy and wait next to the ballot box and SAVE.
3. Once Dave unlocks the ballot box, steal all the votes except for the one for Rosie or Bob.
4. Dave will count that one vote and tell Rosie or Bob that they won.  Then he'll pout and storm off into the wasteland.

After you rig the election, the new president will give you the key to the safe.

The three times I've played through, I couldn't go all the way with rigging the election. So awesome that there's three ways to get into the safe (actually four, killing everyone and taking the key).

I waited till I was almost level 20 to do Riley's Rangers, it was too easy then.

I was too lazy to steal the votes from the Dave election, so I just broke into his safe.

I haven't started the Pitt or Point Lookout so I can't vouch for them. Anchorage was different enough to be not terrible, but I can see people not liking it (it's a straight shooter with no loot since you're in a simulation :()

I still think those couple of awesome items you get at the end of Anchorage for use in the rest of the game make it worth it.

Plus I'm itching to make good use of that rejuvenating AP perk I took at level 20. :pimp

I'm wearing that hockey mask!  But I can't remember why and I didn't bother to check when I started playing again - I figured there'd be a good reason.

Don't have Ranger Armour though, have to check that out.  I just use Leather Armour because it doesn't weigh much.

I'm using the Tesla Armor and LeDoux Hockey Mask.  Using A3-21's Plasma Rifle with 100 points into energy weapons and the perk that if I kill someone in VATS, my AP replenishes, as WELL as the perk where it regenerates faster.  I'm a killing machine.

okay, so I found it's literally one spot where I can't enter or the game freezes.  Happens every time.  It's the Sewage Facility entrance to the sewers.

But the one time I got in the sewers, I found a ghoul with a party hat on and a whole nuka cola bar set-up.  I killed him and took his party hat.   I think his name was gallo.

I'm finding all kinds of stuff I never saw in my 20 hours with the PC version.  For one thing, I had no idea you could blow up vehicles so easily (and that the explosions are fucking awesome.)

Can't stay mad at you Fallout 3  :-*

The best part was finding a long stretch of highway somewhere in the middle of the map that had a line of cars on it. The first one blew up and took the raider that I was trying to hit out with it, and then the rest of the vehicles detonated one after the other, in succession, like explosive dominoes. Mini-mushroom clouds to the horizon.  8)

I think I'm gonna switch from carrying Ol' Painless to a Tesla Cannon when I find one.  I'm probably also going to start carrying Protectron's Gaze instead of the Terrible Shotgun because it's a little better and I've hoarded like 2,000 energy cells.

I'm currently trying to get 1,000 points in Mass Effect though.  It's really nice how easy doable the achievements are in Fallout 3.  Speech successes are hard to get on a first playthrough though.

I only got to play for a few minutes last night.  My life feels so empty.

I'm planning on getting the fast AP recharge perk too.  It's gonna be awesome. :hyper

I haven't found that yet.  I'm going to make a specific save before I explode them so I can relive the undoubtedly awesome moment repeatedly.

It reminds me of blowing up Megaton which is one of the most awesome sequences in a game (I reloaded and saved Megaton though :-[).

Every time I come to this thread I see how much shit I missed, and I've been playing for ~80 hours... never did blow up Megaton, for instance. From the GAF thread on the game, I am hearing impressions on how Mothership Zeta isn't very good, more Anchorage than Point Lookout.  :-\

I got to level 26, and the faster AP recharge perk didn't pop, then at 27 I realised I needed 7 AGIL :(

Might take the all SPECIAL points to 9 at 29 or 30. Should be fun.

I completed all the original game quests that had achievements last night, only had Oasis (awesome) and Agathas Song (ok) to go. Such an awesome game, I really don't want it to end

I just realised that presumably when you take raise SPECIALS to 9 perk, it also increases the corresponding skills.

That's another thing I've got to think about now and allow for.  Crap.

Okay, I just tested it to see if increasing my points that way has any effect in-game and it DOES NOT.  I doubled my barter skill from 49-100 and moira still bought the items at the exact same prices.

It probably breaks the game so don't do it.

That's true.  I've been meaning to get out my calculator and check that.  It should be OK since I did whatever it was early in the game that gives you lots of skill points every time you level up.

On level 27 I have Big Guns at 88, Barter at 41, Unarmed at 25 or something and everthing else is 100. I think, I should check but it's something like that.

It's theoretically possible to get everything up to 100 if you have 40 points in every skill.  10 points from the skill bobblehead and there's 25 of each skill book so if you have the comprehension perk, that's 50 points.

Dont forget the perk that gives you +3 points per level, which I think you get at level 3.

And a higher Intelligence gives more skill points.  I think I get 23 at each level up. :tophat

Played a bit of Mothership Zeta, so far it's pretty snore-worthy... linear corridors, constant combat, no interesting choices to make or any exploration. Not a patch on Point Lookout, though maybe I am getting burned out on this game... 80 hours of gameplay will do that to ya.

One funny thing in Mothership Zeta:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
meeting a cryogenically-frozen samurai who speaks to you in Japanese (with accompanying romanji), which your character can't understand

Oh gee, I'm sorry, maybe this isn't the right game for you then?

I'm sorry I didn't realize this was the Official MLG Fallout 3 Competition thread :lol

At Jury St Metro Station (NE of Evergreen Mills) I found a convenience store where with a bunch of boxes set up like dominoes that sets off this chain reaction.  You can see it at 5:54 in this vid.

Someone had a bit of fun making that I suspect.

done.  hmm, been playing this so much lately that I'm not in the mood to tackle the DLC.   Pretty fucking good game though.

I'm nearly through Anchorage.  I'm enjoying it, although if I were already at Level 30 it'd probably feel like a bit of a waste.

I've been playing through it again quickly. I'm at level 17 and I'm on the last two main line quests.

Should I just go ahead and buy Broken Steel now? How are the new side quests displayed? Are they just hidden around the waste?

I probably will skip Operation Anchorage as I don't really care to play a mostly combat focused expansion. The other two will get bought though

Operation Anchorage is great since you get two very awesome items from it (Gauss Rifle and Chinese Stealth Suit).

Yes, you can max out your skills if you're a stat-whore.  Otherwise it's kind of useless actually.  The new perks mostly are crappy, I only used two of them (puppies and nuclear anomaly).

The biggest problem is that once you complete all the quests, there's absolutely nothing to do but wander looking for loot.  The overworld has some interesting easter eggs but it's pretty boring if you're just wandering around.

I grabbed Broken Steel. Lame.

Ending was just "throw bunch of dudes at you LOL!!" wtf. shit was terrible.

I dunno bout getting the other packs now, tbh. The Pitt looks interesting due to the setting, Point Outlook I don't really know anything about, Mothership Zeta I'll probably skip as well.

I've been running around with the Chinese Stealth Suit from Anchorage and it's awesome.  I can walk right in front of people and they have no idea I'm there, and I can even hide again once 'Danger' is displayed. :ninja

I think DLC is better if you are only part way through the main game.  Otherwise you get cool loot and then have nothing to do with it.

That's why I'm pretty excited about playing the GOTY edition with all of it integrated in.  By the time it comes out, it will have been more than half a year since I played the game at all and I'll definitely be ready to give it at least another good run through or two.

I haven't played Point Lookout yet, but I don't think The Pitt is quite as big. It's mainly just a few urban sectors with a some outlying areas [the leadup to the city and some dungeons]. It took me about four or fives hours to do most of the stuff.

two quests in Point Outlook: Velvet Curtain and The Dark Heart of Blackhall.

AWESOME. probably the best quests in this entire game. They aren't focused on combat but rather focused on exploring. I wish the game had more quests like that.

That was the most fun I've playing the game. So good.
