Just when I was getting really excited for the revived Futurama, total bummer news emerges: The voice actors are going to be different. Who's going to Zoid my Zoidberg?
Twentieth Century Fox, which is still producing the series even though new episodes will air on Comedy Central, is recasting the major voice roles for the show. That means no more Billy West (Fry, Professor, and Ziodberg), Katey Sagal (Leela), John DiMaggio (Bender), Maurice LaMarche (Kif Kroker, among others), or Tress MacNeil (Mom, and several others). Worst!
Fox released a statement saying "We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands. While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to Matt and David's brilliantly subversive characters."
Is it still Futurama with totally different voices, PopWatchers, or can this news bite your shiny metal -- well, you know.

No point in bringing back Futurama without the original voices.
-
The Futurama panel at Comic Con will be awesome now.
It's going to feature the entire cast grilling a Fox exec.

Pretty much. I'm sure that they didn't even really want that much, compared to other shows, but Fox probably cheaped out and figures that nerds will watch it regardless of who's doing the voices.

Why bring back a show if you're going to run off the fanbase? It's animated Groening show. It's not like you can reinvent it to a new audience.

Cam Clarke as Fry

You know, its not like Billy West and Katey Segal are swimming in job offers, and its not lilke Futurama was a huge cash cow.
It just wont be the same show without billy :(
-
Who knows what the offer was or what the projected budget/ROI was on those shows? I don't.
But I know I am not interested in watching a Futurama without those voice actors.
-
It's just a negotiation tactic. They know any revival will fail with pretty much the entire cast gone. Either they will go back to the table and hammer out a deal or they will kill the project entirely.
At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing Futurama end anyway. If the whole comeback is going to be about cost-cutting and shoestring budgets, then the show's animation and writing quality will probably tank.

Hey guys, it will be fine. They'll just get Seth MacFarlene to do all of the voice work by himself!

Imagine the possibilities. Imagine the nerdrage. :lol
I can actually see massive nerdrage accomplishing something in all this, and think the original cast will return.

Nothing. They gave both plenty of time and money to increase ratings. Not enough people were watching Eventually FOX has to remind those with entitlement issues they are not a charity.
You could argue they doomed futurama by constantly having their sports broadcasts bleed into it. I personally think its an overated show for nerds by nerds that was never going to resonate with the masses.

Arrested Development got a fair shot.
Futurama was never scheduled during "real" primetime (past 8PM EST) and was frequently pre-empted by football. Even if you wanted to watch the show it was made incredibly difficult to find. If they had simply aired it after The Simpsons I think things could have been very different.

Given how Family Guy sucks so much now, I don't know why anyone would want Futurama to come back. The direct to DVD releases were lukewarm at the very best and post-Family Guy cancellation style obnoxiousness at the worst. If fanservice and half assed writing is in the cards for Futurama, like it was on the direct to DVD releases, it is best they not even bother.
I do believe Futurama got a good shot. Successful TV shows have been made without ideal time slots in the past. They succeeded because the writing was good. Futurama I'd consider to be a good show but it was never really funny and relied too much of continuity and canon. Did they expect anyone outside of the die hard set to really give a fuck about Fry's brain waves being so inferior that he is the savior of the universe not in one episode by several? No. I think by the third season, they knew it was doomed so it just became a show for the fans. Might be why I think by Season 4, the show was wrapped up in its own BS to ever really recover, hence the cancellation and the mediocre direct to DVD releases.
