It's in theatres now -- I know there was an old thread about it and some folks seemed quite excited. I finally got to go last night, and enjoyed it pretty thoroughly.
Critics have complained that it is a re-tread of Woody Allen movies, and it pretty much is. The screenplay was actually written in 1977, and not really updated beyond a few cultural references and such. I've only seen a few of Allen's big films (Manhattan, Annie Hall, etc) and even to me it is a little same-y. There's the fourth-wall breaking, the older man in a completely implausible relationship with a woman 1/3 his age, the cool old jazz music, etc. It's all pretty familiar, but I don't think that makes it any less fun. Plus it's nice to see Larry David give his own take on Allen's usual persona.....much more bold and abrasive. My major complaint is that the story wraps up very quickly and very neatly, almost out of nowhere. Still very funny, though it feels a bit less realistic since so many of the characters are sitcom-ish stereotypes.
Go ahead and see it if you are interested. Don't watch the trailer, as it essentially gives away 2/3rds of the plot. It's about an old New York curmudgeon who lets a Southern belle teenage runaway live with him. Hijinks ensue, etc. That's all you need to know.

I will definitely nab this on DVD. Big fan of Larry David.

I saw it a few weeks ago. I liked it, but Larry David's shtick got on my nerves pretty quickly.
Allen needs to get his ass back to Europe and churn out more awesome films.

He still makes roughly 1 movie every single year......which is pretty astounding considering that he's like 75 years old.
This film I guess also reminded me of Mighty Aphrodite, in that it has a quirky female lead that carries the film almost as much as the male lead.

I looked it up and from 1969 to 2009 he's made one movie every year with only 1981, 1976, 1974, and 1970 being exceptions.

Yeah, at the end of his career/life he will easily have 40+ movies under his belt. I wonder why that hardly seems to happen anymore.....nobody has a truly prolific career like that. Even today's good directors only manage to put something out once every 3-4 years it seems like. But when you look at the "good" filmmakers of yesteryear, they all have dozens and dozens of projects.

I think a lot of it just has to do with the way movies are made these days. You get 8-12 months of writing, several months of shooting, and then about year of post-production. A schedule like that doesn't give you the time to make more than one movie every two years. Then you factor in the breakdown of the studio system leaving writers and directors as basically free agents that move from one studio to the next whenever they come up with their latest project.
Back in the old days it was basically just a few weeks of writing, a few weeks of shooting, a few weeks of editing, and then out the door, with a lot of the same people working at writing and directing as full-time jobs under lengthy contracts. It wasn't all that hard to rack up a long list of movies. Hollywood's just a different place than it was back in then.
