Title: Trouble with Girls and Piracy
Post by: PhoenixWright on July 28, 2009, 12:54:42 PM
Dear EB,

I really like this girl at work, and I was talking to her Sunday, and we got on gaming. She told me how she downloads DS games. I wasn't having any of that, so I gave her a heated 5 minute lecture on how wrong she is. She walked away, and despite working with her all day for the rest of Sunday, all of yesterday, and today, she refuses to say a word to me. Can I get her back? I like her so much, I'd even be willing to put up with her being a filthy heathen pirate.

To the OP, maybe an apology and a bit of an explanation as to why you went off on her?

The thing is that pirating media is basically free advertising for these media companies, and actually leads to more sale. Say for example someone pirates a game, then tells their friends about it and they all pirate it. Well eventually one of these people will buy the game, so it is a net plus.

And even if none of these people buys it, the increased exposure created solely by piracy is literally priceless, and pays the way for other potential revenues from merchandise and advertisements.

You did the right thing, Nintendo is happy. Now you can play your DS games alone, like they were meant to be played! You're a true gamer.

There are 5 people I know (and some of my co-workers), they mostly download their psp and ds games and brag that they have the newest games (yes but they are pirated!!!). And these guys earn good money at work, yet dont buy the games (this includes PC games). I hate that.

I dont care if I have only 8 original Ds games and 6 original psp games (my co-workers for example have 100 pirated games). At least I care about videogame quality to spend my money on unlike some of my friends and co-workers.

No no, what upset him enough to blow a nice girl off is that because of her pirating some Nintendo exec can have 10 min less with a hooker this week.

The hooker probably needs the extra cash to pay her sick mother's medical expenses, though.

You're a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.  Try not blowing up at people just because you disagree with them.  Social skills ftw.

I download music all the time. On the other hand, I wouldn't pirate films or tv shows. Doing it with music seems fine to me; often artists encourage it, much of the shit I do pirate comes from artists who have already made a shit ton of money, etc. At least that's how I justify it mentally

...but...you might find me making "how does one torrent something" threads when Game of Thrones comes to HBO

When will this be? I download Entourage and True Blood from torrents now since my parents got rid of HBO/Cinemax.
