Buying this total. I know it'll sell like shit but God damn is it amazing looking.

Why would a Disney game on the Wii sell like shit?

 :o

Looks insane.  Don't really mind too much that it's on the Wii because I thought it was canceled when that gaf thread was first posted.  I would have much rather it been on PC/360/PS3 since it could have done more to match the art, but I'll just be satisfied to play the game.  I'm amazed that Disney would allow this.

look at it.

All I see is some impressive looking artwork for a game that I might potentially purchase for a system I rarely buy games for. I also see it involving a mascot as big as Mario himself.

Hey Wii playing kids and parents of Wii playing kids, how would you like to play a game starring Disney's belovable cast of characters?

Yay!

Oh yeah, the game takes place in a post apocalyptic nightmare, and Goofy is now some sort of crazy steam powered robot zombie!

Uh...

Destined for epic bomb. Warren Spector's gone totally insane.

I think its all in how they market it.  You got the world's biggest mascot saving the disney universe, which probably implies a restorative progression.  But hopefully it won't suck like Kingdom Hearts.  There's also the fact that Mickey Mouse has been terribly underutilised for full fledged projects. I'm thinking it'll be a nice complement to super Mario Galaxy.

I don't get how a board full of elitist nerds could find anything to enjoy in that steaming pile of nomura fanwank.  And I usually like fanwank too.

Regardless of the game's merits it'll be interesting to see how much of that concept art Disney greenlights for the final product. Zombie Goofy? I just don't see that happening

Kingdom Hearts games are pretty much the ultimate fan service games; it combines the nostalgia of disney with the obsession of final fantasy.  I enjoy them, but I don't think they're super great or anything.  It's a lot like Smash Bros where you want to see old favorites in there because it's neat.

in KH3, I want Pixar movies and Captain EO.  would they fit? not really, but nothing in kingdom hearts does.  the story is about doors and keys or some shit like that.

I actually remember the day KHII came out.  I sauntered in to a gamestop just to browse on my way back from classes.  it was leather jackets, long hair slicked back in to a pony tail, black t-shirts, trench coats, pale greasy skin, acne, and anime t-shirts everywhere.  The B.O. stench was overpowering.  Needless to say, I was about to call the police on the obvious impromptu NAMBLA gathering, but then I saw the signs about KHII launch day.

Never played KH2, but I couldn't get into the first KH because the combat was so repetitive and the camera was atrocious, coupled with the really tiny environments.

The "Goofy Zombie/Shambler" is several different colors of wrong. Scary wrong. Nightmare-inducing for kids wrong. The Pink Elephant elevator (Pink-Elephator?) is also scary.

I think, honestly, they're missing the target audience. A Disney game on Wii is not going to benefit from going "dark and gritty." Or turning known characters into threatening, eyeless, clockwork automatons. Don't get me wrong, as a "hardcore gamer" and a fan of deconstruction, I'd love to see this come out just like this, preferably on X360 but whatever. I'd probably buy a Wii to play the kind of game this artwork implies. But it won't look like this -- and if it does it will not sell to the Walmart and Disney fan crowd.

Except pokemon, apparently.

I think alot of the comments stating the tone doesn't suit the wii audience are both premature and hypocritical.  Premature because I doubt they are going to stick with "robot posessing multiple decapitated mascot heads" in the end.  Its concept art that will probably be altered until development hits its stride.  So, I'm expecting robot things, but not as grotesque.  Now saying a DISNEY game is necessarily going to sell well on platforms with narrow male demographics is just plain stupid.  We can't say for sure that Kingdom Hearts sold on disney ip moreso than final fantasy or vice versa.  It obviously  didn't sell because it was fun.

late to this thread.

Ok, the artwork is awesome.  I saw the spector name in another thread and just assumed the art was for Deus Ex 3 and that it was taking place in a ruined disneyworld for some portion.

Anyhow, reading this thread that it's for the Wii I gotta join on the wtf bandwagon.  You don't make art this nice if you can't transition it properly into in-game and you sure as hell can't do that on the Wii.  boooo

Says the kingdom hearts fangirl...

Yeah I didn't want to rile up shit, but I was going to add that no one "...except the Japanese" can transition art to in-game on shitty hardware.

BUT

at the same time I've still yet to see it done on the wii.  The wii does some things better than the PS2, but it does some worse and those worse things make it hard to have beautiful games like the PS2 did despite it's tech.
Title: Re: Warren Spector's "Epic Mickey" is for the Wii
Post by: EmCeeGrammar on July 30, 2009, 05:47:53 AM
The only things the Wii lacks is dev effort.  Galaxy, Brawl, and Corruption have amazing particle effects, polygon counts, good texture work, smooth animations and all run at 60 fps.  Galaxy also has a gigantic draw distance, bump mapping, and situations with 20 something enemies running around on a wooden yoshi head or some other shit.  Sure it ain't hd, but the specs are in place to easily surpass the ps2 if third parties gave a damn.

Post by: EmCeeGrammar on July 30, 2009, 07:26:18 AM
There's nothing stopping Marvel/DC from emulating the broader spectrum manga market and catering to people outside of tweens and nerds.  Nintendo successfully removed the stigma alot of people associate with gaming hardware.  What sucks for the Western illustrative medium is that its JUST superheroes in the spotlight.  Japan has their shonen in addition to catering to several other demographics.

edit: and I know Borys is doing a lazy job at flamebaiting, but I'm just going to smirk remembering how he was geeking out over a fucking eyetoy+.

Yeah, Warren would never dumb down a game to try to court a wider audience.

Oh shit, I just tripped over the corpses of Thief and Deus Ex.

Part of me wants to believe he had nothing to do with those games later incarnations. Stop reminding me :gloomy

Wii is the blight of gaming.

Actually, bitching, screeching, whining, selfish, spoiled manbabies are the blight of gaming, and if they're allowed to, they'll choke the gaming industry to fucking death just like they did the comic industry.

The Wii has nothing to do with gaming.  It is however a serious threat to Trivial Pursuit board game sales.

It's a little difficult to be enthusiastic about your job when half of your target market are inconsolable wretches of humanity. I only loathe comic fans more. Those are truly the scum of the earth.

Could be worse. You could be working in the comics industry -AND- hate the comic fans. Are you Howard Chaykin or Bill Willingham? Those guys have it rough: they are disgusted by the only people willing to read their work.

The game is Wii Exclusive

http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=220427

Quote
We've since been told that it's a Wii-exclusive where you paint your way through levels using the Wii Remote. This 'painting your way' involves you drawing, etching and erasing whole or parts of levels as you go. Capcom's Okami immediately springs to mind but we've not got enough info to go on to make any kind of informed judgement.

As for the story, we've also been told that it'll be based around very old and/or forgotten Disney characters who are out to get their revenge on Mickey, presumably because they're jealous of all his fame and fortune. We Googled 'early Disney characters' and found that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit returned a lot of hits. A bit before even CVG's time all that though.

I don't think it will be for kids, though. LEGO Disney would sell shitton, this might not.

The game isn't the dark steampunk people think it is from the leaked art. Well not entirely. The painting aspect cones in where Mickey paints the levels to restore them to the normal Disney look.
Title: Re: Warren Spector's "Epic Mickey" is for the Wii
Post by: ManaByte on August 01, 2009, 06:18:26 AM
Anyone who thinks a SMG-level Mickey platformer won't sell is deluding themselves. All they need to do is show a commercial with Mickey running through a restored level and it'll sell. The Okami-style level painting could also sell it.

This is apparently going to be a return to the Magical Quest-quality Disney games, but with a Mickey Mania style fan service twist with the 20s Disney characters as villains and familiar locations to paint/restore to their regular appearance.

The only thing that would hurt it would be to release it too close to SMG2.
