Hey! It's a step up from your standard bald space marine. Game looks great, hopefully it leads to the creation of more awesome 2D side-scrollers.

This game looks phenomenal, good enough to be a disc based release.

Did someone say Flashback?

Upon seeing that mecha-spider, methinks this game will have awesome boss fights. Sort of a bit like Zelda where you find a certain item in an area and use it to exploit thar weaknesses.

Me want to shoot rockets up their mecha asses.  :drool

So very good.  I'd pay $30.  It's a steal at $15.  Hopefully the achievements will be fun to go after and encourage replayability.  I love the Gears 2-style achievement trackers.  EVERY game should have that feature.

Feel free to support Chair by buying two other AAA+ games - Undertow and Advent Rising

And allow me to say - I told ya so :smug
Title: Re: SHADOW COMPLEX
Post by: dammitmattt on August 08, 2009, 10:37:36 PM
I got Undertow for free and just never really got into it.  Is it actually any good?  Is Advent Rising BC?

Oh, and I kinda did buy two copies.  I bought my friend a 1600 point card for helping move some stuff for an hour and it's going towards Shadow Complex :)

I just looked at the achievements and I'm looking forward to doing the "complete the game with less than 13% of the items" one, which I assume means that you can only pick up the main abilities that are needed to complete the game.  It's too bad that downloadable games can only have 12 achievements.  This is the kind of game that screams for more.

Undertow is pretty solid, co-op is good fun. I've got 2 achievements left on it (Ultra mode and 10000 kills)  so might go back for those eventually

And yeah I'll be on Shadow Complex day 1. Looks awesome! I love Metriodvanias

lets see...so I've got MvC2, Trials is sounding hot, so is this.  but I don't really like the demo of Splosion Man that much, but if I buy that, I'll get TMNT for free.  I hear TMNT isn't really worth free though.
Title: Re: SHADOW COMPLEX
Post by: Herr Mafflard on August 10, 2009, 08:48:47 PM
Haha Turtles in Time is rubbish. Literally played for about an hour, so mind numbingly boring, even though it's short. Didn't even want the achievements.

I now think the initial 1200 price point was a clever marketing ploy by Ubisoft. The game was never intended to sell at 1200, but they knew that if they made it seem like they were being generous and giving for 800, nostalgia nerds will go bananas and flock to it like flies flock to shit.

Does playing on Insane make you level up faster?

You get mega XP increase on Insane. If you think it's too hard you can change the difficulty on the fly. I'm just enjoying the game the first time (on Insane), I'll do the hard stuff later. There are also achievements that don't give you gamerscore... probably gamer pics.

Metroid and Metroidvania are two of my favorite games, so suffice to say this is pretty awesome.  Combat is a bit shit though, especially attempting to shoot into the screen.  Camera pan isn't that great either.  Slow horizontal pan sometimes allows enemies to shoot at you before you can see them.  You also can get stuck making jumps sometimes.  Surprised a game this highly rated has a bunch of technical issues like this.  Despite this the game is still great fun, yet a tad overrated.  SC really isn't on the same level as Metroid or Castlevania, but its only 15 bucks and there are only so many times I can replay SoTN without wanting to try something new!

no more than prime is an FPS.

Title: Re: SHADOW COMPLEX
Post by: cool breeze on August 20, 2009, 11:27:23 AM
probably, yeah

only things I didn't like was the sometimes bad combat (shooting into the screen is stupid, the three turret sections were lame, and some sections have enemies shooting off screen) and that it became somewhat janky as you kept progressing.  Like, sometimes my guy wouldn't wall jump and other things like that, and there was one specific section where I kept dying because the game would skip and not register my double jump.  Other than that it's incredible.

this game is a better uncharted than uncharted

It's kinda funny how the main character is Drake when you start out.  One thing I realized when playing Uncharted the other day is that the guy who voices him annoys me in every game other than Unchated (Ass.Creed, PoP, this).  But whatever, who cares, game is awesome.

The background-shooting parts are the only shitty part of the game imo. They should have let you click the left stick or something to go into cover, which would make you shoot exclusively into the background.

Played the demo, it was OK,  but the controls seemed a bit stiff (I hate how there's like a bit of lag when you turn) and how it's like 15 bucks. It's better than most of Epic's games lately at least. I'll probably get it when it drops in price.

Alright.  I think I'm about done with Shadow Complex.  I'm at level 20, I've collected all the pieces of armor, all 12 gold bars, and about 90% or more of all the other items.  I went through the end game (which is ridiculously too easy when you have the helmet) and I don't think I want to go back to this for quite awhile.  Fun while it lasted though.

Kind of wish it had some sort of teleporter system towards the end.  Having to go back and forth for the umpteenth time was about to have me drive my head through the fucking wall.  Teleportation should've been one of the power suit's abilities instead of that helmet that makes you invincible.

That's 20 on normal with a whole lot of bullshit killing on the side.

Title: Re: SHADOW COMPLEX
Post by: AdmiralViscen on August 21, 2009, 11:49:32 PM
Yea, teleporters are a glaring omission.

I'm playing on Hardcore, I have like 65% of the map revealed and I'm already level 23. I haven't had the suit for very long and I don't think I got any of its bonus components.
Title: Re: SHADOW COMPLEX
Post by: pilonv1 on August 22, 2009, 07:21:09 AM
Should be a teleport to any save room like Red Faction.

I got to level 28 or something on Hardcore, it wasn't that difficult. Like Hitler said I'm not going to go back to this for a while, even though it was fantastic.

Once you've gotten the Missle upgrade, is it possible to get all the other items in the game? I don't want to trigger that last boss fight and create an annoyance so I want to get 100% as early as possible.

No, the missile upgrade doesn't give you access to everything.  You're still going to need to pick up the remaining powersuit components (or at least the hookshot and double jump) if you want to snag all the other collectables.  And there's nothing out there that'll make you swim any deeper than the scuba gear.  As soon as you get that you're set, you can swim as deep and as long as you want.

You can easily work around the end game too.  The game will autosave right before the final battle begins so all you gotta do is stop going to the right.  You can work yourself all around the map from there and if you accidently set the sequence off, just reload your last save.

OK. I heard there was some dome exploding cutscene that could affect your ability to get certain items. When does that happen? I have the hookshot and now I have the triple jump too. All I need is the last gun and the helmet.

If you're to the point where your collecting stuff like the hookshot, go to the map screen and turn on the blue marker/trail thing.  You should see an area in the gold section that has an icon in it pointing you where to go.  That's the place with the dome event but that's not the final end game.  But if you just stumbled upon it by chance, there's a save room right before the dome sequence and even if you miss that, just die in the fire and start from the last save point.  Nothing to really worry about.

Dude, Insane is EASY. I die sometimes but its not beat your dick in. Plus you keep your EXP so you can re-kill those guys and re-explore the map and get even more EXP. Why are people afraid of Insane? I just entered the factory and now at Level 20. That's 4 levels in a span of like 5 minutes.

When you beat the game, your multiplier is based off of the lowest difficulty you had throughout the whole game.  Even if you went to casual for just a second, it would assume you beat the game on casual.

Fair enough, but I was told that you get more XP per kill based on what difficulty you're currently playing on. Is that incorrect? If so, fuck me, because I only played about the first 10 minutes of the game on normal before making the switch. I was going to restart, but I figured I hadn't gotten far enough to bother.
