Title: Should I open this copy of Saint's Row 2? THIS IS AN AWESOME TOPIC REPLY A LOT
Post by: Don Flamenco on August 09, 2009, 11:36:45 AM
I just got the Saint's Row 2 collectors edition for $20 at best buy (store clearance, ymmv.)  Haven't played the first one.  Debating whether I'll play it or not...I liked GTA4 and Crackdown.  Is this good?

You're just not used to a GTA-style game actually playing well.  It will pass.   ;)

hmm..the collision detection is atrocious. I got stuck in the geometry of a car because the driver was pulling me out (even as I had a shotgun in hand) as soon as I was getting in.  I had to jump through the car to get out, since the game hadn't registered me as driving yet, even though I was technically in the car :lol  Takes about 2 shots to blow up a helicopter, vehicle, or anything...so I don't really feel like I'm doing anything.  Also, the game stuttered and froze on the THQ intro screen, with a sound loop going for about 10 seconds.  And this is just the first hour of playing   :-\

This is like Dead to Rights or Stranglehold compared to Max Payne...but I'll play some more

Nice FUD. None of that happens. First you resort to cheating in Fallout, now you are faking these glitches. Why do you even bother? Go play with your iPhone.

I'm not joking. I played the game nonstop when I bought it (but stopped because I wanted to play it 100% co-op for dem cheevs) and experienced no glitch except in a mission (which EVERYONE experienced so it wasn't exactly an isolated case - patched now), plus the co-op checklist glitch (also patched). So I'm firmly in the belief that you are just spreading more FUD. I hope you are happy. Loser.

I'm not done playing it, so maybe things'll pick up.  I'm just saying my first hour is a little rough.

also, the game automatically went into the marketplace and spent all my MS points, then maxed my credit card with Ace Combat, Soul Calibur, and Vesperia DLC.

Would I like Saints Row if I didn't like Crackdown?

In Crackdown I got bored once the missions were over, and the missions themselves were dull.  I think I need something that has lots of interesting missions and characters and doesn't just rely on me to make my own fun.

Yeah, this pretty much sucks shit.  :lol  Horrible graphics, awful physics, shitty hit detection, rough framerate, lifeless gun fights, nonsense writing with lowest common denominator humor, missions hampered by all of these factors combined.   All the hallmarks of a shitty GTA clone.  My session ended with my car getting stuck in the geometry of a fucking pay phone.  I got shot at from a cop who fell through the walls.

:piss  another GTA clone with a small fanbase of reactionists who swear up and down that it's a better game :piss2

in short, all the little annoying things in the first couple hours with this game made me not compelled to play it.  I'm not gonna compare item-by-item, since I played all of GTAIV and LATD...it wouldn't be fair to compare them like that. It does look like there are a lot more options for free-form sandbox stuff in this game.  I don't do anything like that in GTA...only missions.

But generally reverse anything negative I've said about this and turn it into a positive for GTA, aside from the framerate, which can get bad when enough cars are exploding around you.

I can see how someone would like the driving better in SR2.  it's easier to handle, for sure.  It's more arcade style.

The shooting is pretty bad though.  No lock on.  The fine aim option may as well be something out of a resident evil game, since you can barely move while in it.  It has that cheap, loose feeling I get from Max Payne clones--no weight or kick to the guns at all.

I played an hour playing this earlier.  Still awesome fun.

You can ride a motorcycle around with your katana out and slice as you whoosh past random people.  You can throw the strippers in your penthouse at your ninja thugs, then use your pimp cane-shotgun to kill them both, then do an Irish jig on their body - naked.   You can get a sex change while you're friend, via co-op, is skydiving.

GTA4 was like a baby with facial hair.  It wasn't more mature, it was just trying to hide the fact that it shit itself.  Real Men played Mafia years ago and shat on wannabe games like The Getaway and GTA4.

I thought GTA4 was okay for the first eight or so hours before you left the initial setup.  At that point, they gave up and turned it into GTA3/VC/SA/Saint's Row with nothing that made those games fun.  Lost and the Damned was a lot better for being focused and consistent the entire time.  And in general, GTA4 had shit driving.  Excuses like "Old cars should drive bad" are distinguished mentally-challenged.  Every car in the game handled like shit and the taxis helped a lot.  Lost and the Damned even took care of that bullshit by making motorcycle driving fun again.

I see the appeal, but I see through it when the game covers up really boring gameplay elements with "wacky" ideas.

"press a to spray guy with something and you win"  turns into "TAKE THE TACO BELL MEAT HOSE AND SPRAY IT ALL OVER THIS GROUP OF cheeseburger OVERWEIGHT SENIOR CITIZEN FURRIES WHILE GARY COLEMAN DANCES THE CHARLESTON ON TOP OF A DEAD HOOKER!!! LOOOOOOOOOOL"  is Demi's idea of genius.  :smug

I still fail to see why Saints has boring gameplay elements when it is word for word the same as GTAs. You drive cars. You shoot people. You beat them up. You do missions. You do side missions (just kidding GTA doesnt).
Title: Re: Should I open this copy of Saint's Row 2?
Post by: bork on August 12, 2009, 04:20:25 PM
You know how you said you didn't bother with any of the friend stuff in GTA4, Kranz?  You don't have to bother with all those side missions in SR2, either.

When I needed rep to be able to do another mission, I'd just do the ones I really liked.  It was always quick and easy.  I even ended up liking the demolition derby stuff so much that I went through the entire thing.

Doesn't EvilBore in general hold the opinion that Resident Evil 5 is better than Dead Space, too?

0-2, there.

For the record, both Saint's Row and GTA's mission structure and assignment are balls. But while there may be more to do in Saint's Row, it's so pointless and juvenile that it ceases to be fun. Driving around in trucks and spraying manure on people? Truly, Postal-game material there, folks.

I like GTA's attention to detail, better humor (although not by much), and more fully realized setting.

You know how you said you didn't bother with any of the friend stuff in GTA4, Kranz?  You don't have to bother with all those side missions in SR2, either.
In which case you're left with an ugly, badly animated GTA imitator, when you could be playing GTA.

Gaming in general is just doing a pre-ordained list of tasks in order to gain a sense of accomplishment. I thought you'd know that, Mr. Gamerscore.  ::)

I also cannot play EITHER of those games with friends like I can do RE5 and Saints 2. Two games with two great features and of course they are somehow lesser of the two.

I still have yet to play Dead Space, so no comment on that from me, but RE5 was a blast.  It was a fantastic action game, with great co-op and multiplayer modes that kept me playing for another month or two after I'd beaten the story mode several times and gotten everything.

I like GTA's attention to detail, better humor (although not by much), and more fully realized setting.

What's more "fully-realized" about it?  That you can go and pick up hookers or something?

In which case you're left with an ugly, badly animated GTA imitator, when you could be playing GTA.

I prefer Saint's Row 2 to (any) GTA because of it's game play.  It trumps every single GTA game based on that alone.  The game was actually FUN to play though.

I assumed he means that the city in GTAIV more closely resembles a real city than Saint's Row 2. I agree with that somewhat, not that it makes any difference since you can't do anything with all those realistic buildings in GTAIV.

Essentially this. It's all aesthetic, and very shallow, yes, but both games are pretty shallow anyway. I like the car handling in GTA4 too, haters be damned. Sure, it's NOTHING like actual driving, but it's a fun engine regurtless. SR feels a bit too mechanic and binary. It's all personal opinion, though. I can understand why you like SR2, I just respectfully think you're all beneath me. :smug

Borecast donation sounds better. Sorry to rob that idea. In it's place, I'll put up a GH3 and guitar for PS3 donation to the borecast or Motorstorm 2. Whichever is more desirable by the borecast.

As soon as eel returns from the dead or prole steps forward for some shipping information.

in short, all the little annoying things in the first couple hours with this game made me not compelled to play it.

I'm still wondering if this is a troll thread, but if you're really one of the mission-only players of sandbox games, I can see why GTA IV is good for you, and Saints Row 2 is not. The writing in Saints 2 is OK, and is definitely more over the top and a little less consistent than GTA has been. And SR2's gameplay is MAINLY about the side stuff, being able to do anything, anywhere, and probably pick up some kind of reward for it. Just about everything they took away from IV in streamlining it ended up in SR2 as a gimme.

Fuck, Saints Row 2 is in an ugly platinum box (yeah, I'm one of THOSE people).  Damn me and my procrastinating.

The earlier special edition is on sale in a lot of places, on the cheap-o, yo.

PS3 is 29.99
360 is 39.99
...and that's just the new prices, not the Z-Shops.

yeah, I like missions and some side stuff occasionally.  I screwed around with sandbox stuff the most in Crysis and Crackdown.  Mostly in Crysis though, since the AI is fun to play with and the explosions are so damn fun to set up.

Havent read a thread this bad in awhile... I thought all GTAIV apologists had either killed themselves or moved to Hollywood to try their hand at becoming a screenwriter

I don't apologize for anything in the game.  The lack of checkpoints was annoying and there aren't enough role-playing type aspects to it.  And they should give you cheats to allow you to become a crazy, skyscraper-jumping superman with flying cars and the ability to level buildings and shit.  The rest of it I enjoyed. They made a fairly solid game with 4, then improved upon it with the Lost and Damned.  Gay Tony should be even better.

okay, so low gravity is the one cool sounding one.

but man, I'm regretting sending it to Zero Hero now that I know you can change the time to noon or midnight.  I thought super powers would be cool, but CHANGING THE FLOW OF TIME ITSELF is really godly :-P
